Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Perfect Day at Avila Beach
Bike ride, beach walk, and a round of golf at Avila followed by a delicious IPA at sunset was seriously a perfect day--70 degrees in late November--only in California!!!!
Local
Definitely my favourite course in the area, it's beautiful there's plenty of wildlife we even saw Bobcat on the course one day. I play it 2 to 3 times a month and love it
good day for golf
Teed off around 10:15 ideal weather for front 9 became windy on the back. Greens were in good shape, fairways were good, tee boxes could use some work.. All staff were very friendly. Good day for golf.
Very poor playing conditions
Walked the Front 9 Blues (6550/71.8/131) in 2H as a single on a GN "Hot Deal". Weather was around 75, sunny, humid and breezy.
Wanted to get out and hit some used clubs I purchased on eBay. A hilly course with thin, hard fairways does not make for a good experience. I took a drop on #3 fairway from a burrowing animal hole and my ball did not stop rolling until it was on #7 green about 75 yards away? I did not care to play the back 9 today after what I experienced on the front.
Tees look like they are perhaps mowed every 10 days? Furry and unlevel.
Fairways and rough both mowed down kikuyu. Little demarcation between the two. Browning, hard and thin, balls could roll a long ways, which is not a good thing on a hilly course. I would venture a guess that these areas have not been watered since the last rain?
Traps were poor. Looks like they receive no regular maintenance.
Greens were the only good thing about the course, they putted nicely. Soft and medium fast, they rolled well.
No ocean views even though you are close to the ocean. Small warm-up range with mats that would accommodate short irons only beside the first tee. No drink cart or on course services, but the pro shop/starter are really nice.
Tree lined layout up/down rolling hills that sits down in a valley. Front 9 more hilly, back 9 more flat with plenty of red staked hazards to avoid. Decent amount of doglegs, plus you need to know where to aim off a hill to get your ball to end up where you want on several holes.
Overall, average somewhat quirky layout. Usually fun to play but the playing conditions have been deteriorating with each visit. Take my overall course rating with a grain of salt, because 6-7 out of 10 rating for greens pulls up a bunch of 2/3 out of 10 ratings on everything else. The discounted fee I paid was about the same as 2 buckets of balls on a driving range, and the conditions from tee to green are comparable to the average driving range. Okay for on course practice, but I could not recommend anyone come play a serious round here until after a few good rains. Not worth anything in the ball park of their normal fees.
Tee boxes need work
Everything was good at the course except the tee boxes on some of the holes. They could use work to try to level them. Other than that Jay at the front desk was very nice along with the starter, young lady.
Back for another round
One of my favorite courses to play. It's worth it for me to drive 2.5 hrs to play this course. On 9/25/20 I made my first Hole in One on the 8th hole par 3. Best thing about it was my wife was recording it so I can always watch it and show my friends back home. I will be back again.
Nice to Play the Back 9
It was nice to have a morning on the golf course. Several groups were in front of me so I asked in the pro shop and also the starter to see if I could play the back nine. It was nice to be on the course without being pushed by multiple groups behind me. If you come to the beach it’s also nice to play a round of golf. And see all the birds as well.
Tight narrow fairways with slope
Front 9 is in the hills and there's a lot of slope with rather tight fairways. There's very little margin for error and some well hit shots may roll all the way off the fairway. Back 9 has a lot of water to clear as well as the narrow fairways. Small greens and rather fast so more than a couple times I almost rolled it off if on a downhill putt and don't touch it perfectly.
Overall a decent course and could be a good value if you can get a hot deal.
Extremely Disappointing
We were extremely disappointed that we paid $80 each for a course that has not been watered for quite some time. The course was in horrible condition and we would not recommend nor will we ever play there again.
Tight and wonderful layout
Had a blast. Don’t need driver on every hole, managed a 77 today playing smart. Greens are small in many cases, and enough water to be quite challenging. Overall great day on the track! Staff was very friendly!!!
Slow!
Only got 13 holes in 4 hours with waits on every tee box and every approach shot. There was a marshal but made no effort to improve pace of play. Newbies practicing extra putts and getting lessons by other newbies on the fairway before some shots. Very frustrating!
Saturday Golf
Front desk staff very helpful and friendly. Cart/Range staff very abrupt and unhappy. Gave me 2 medium buckets but wanted to see receipt before giving other 2 buckets. Like I was going to steal a bucket. Range in bad shape. Course was fun. Greens were great shape. Course not so much. Pace of play was horrible. Too many golfers. Marshall was doing all he could. Took us over 5 hours. We teed off at 9:12. Gnats were horrible for the first 8 holes till it warmed up. Bring spray.
Course Needs Help
This COULD be a destination resort BUT the conditions of this course are just not worth the $80 green fee's. Tee boxes are awful, the fairways are bad, and the greens are just ok. The bunkers (due to covid, I get it) are full of weeds and not playable.
There are better course in the area, save your time & money.
