Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Really Needs Maintenance
Was visiting the SLO area and had see this course online and thought since it was near the ocean, would be worthwhile getting out. For a" Resort Course" it looks like someone slashed the maintenance budget - course is horribly maintained, bunkers are almost pure dirt and fairways have almost no grass growth and badly needs feeding.
It could be so much better with maintenance but also with some funky holes not really worth $64 that I paid thru Golfnow.
I assume it’s seen better days....
Given I had seen current reviews I knew the course would be in poor shape but it was worse than I expected. All of the other reviews are accurate.... no sand in the bunkers ...fairways threadbare....tee boxes in bad shape...greens were not as disastrous as the other maintenance issues but still pretty bad. It’s a real shame they have let the course go because it could be a fun albeit quirky course in a great location.
Challenging but fun
This is a beautiful golf course. Lots of hills and some narrow fairways. Make sure your iron striking is pure before you play here competitively. I will definitely play here again for a third time.
Beautiful course
We played 9 holes, and started on 10. First shot of the day across the water! Nice hole, across the water (avoid the trees) and then a dogleg left. Greens were in good condition and reasonably quick. We didn’t know where we were going, so had to consult the map on the back of the card several times to find the next hole but still walked in less than 2 hours. Solid par 3’s and plenty of interesting holes. We’ll come back! Also lots of wildlife, especially birds- pelicans, ducks, vultures and more.
Course needs better conditioning
Management needs to put some work into improving the fairways and bunkers. As other reviewers have indicated, fairways have very thin grass, almost like hitting off dirt. The bunkers are dirt. Most of the greens were in good condition. I remember the course actually being in resort golf course condition. Now, it is like a rundown municipal course. Management has other plans for some of the course property, so maybe that is why less money is being spent on conditioning or they have been hit by lack of play with COVID-19, but the course was busy the day I played. Also, management appointed a new greenskeeper recently. Maybe that will help if they provide him the proper support.
Golf Buddy
Challenging course with lots of opportunities to get into trouble from the many sloped fairways. Greens tricky but ok if player has "local knowledge ". Also true of fairways with slopes. leading to trouble or hiding a sand trap with hard surface packed down sand.
Avila Beach
Walked the Blues (6550/71.8/131) in 3H, 45M early afternoon on a GN "Hot Deal". Played about 6 holes as a 3some, the rest as a single. Weather was around 65, sunny and fairly calm.
Tees all over the place. Some were terrible, others pretty good but many were unlevel.
Fairways had decent coverage but were more thin than lush.
Rough was mostly mowed down and not overly penal other than it is kikuyu.
Traps were the worst I have seen on any course in awhile. About half were unplayable mud holes that looked like they had not been maintained in weeks. The others were thin and had not been raked in so long I could not detect a rake mark anywhere.
Greens putted nicely. Soft and medium fast, they rolled well, I was leaving large ball marks on approaches.
Plenty of trees and hazards to avoid. Decent amount of doglegs, plus you need to know where to aim off a hill to get your ball to end up where you want on several holes. Layout is tree lined up/down rolling hills and sits down in a valley. No ocean views even though you are close to the ocean. Small warm-up range with mats that would accommodate short irons only beside the first tee. Overall, average layout in mediocre playing condition, but it's usually a fun layout to play. Could only recommend if you are getting a real deal.
Terrible
Pretty brutal excuse for a golf course. Such a cool location, needs a lot of love. Big spines run through the greens which look like they haven’t been watered all summer. If you care about your score even the slightest this is not the course for you. Waste of a day.
Fun course!
Had a great two days playing golf at this fun Oceanside course. Challenging yet accessible, we played two rounds over two days, each in less than 3.5 hours. Lots of trouble awaits you on your way to to small greens amidst rolling tree lined fairways. Good use of the estuary as a course feature, having to hit over it on the 10th tee with expansive views of the beach and causeway. Ok conditions for late summer and facilities limited for COVID19.
Front nine is tough, all about placement then distance for sure. Back nine seemed to open up a bit with nice views of the water and some great fun holes! Fun layout, greens are consistent but the tee boxes definitely need some work and upgrading. Food at Mulligan’s was good! Staff was super friendly and very helpful since this was my first time playing there. Will definitely return as long as Golfnow has these great deals!
Location great, course condition sad
Just about all fairways are like hitting off hard pan sand traps terrible. Maybe it’s the climate
Pretty good course for the price!
Enjoyed Avila Beach Golf Course....it was a beautiful day. Greens are pretty nice. I'll come back again, expecially because of the price.
