Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Golfer Reviews
Excellent Course in great shape!
We got an exceptional rate to play on a Monday. My son and I played by ourselves behind a threesome. We never had to wait other than the first hole. Considering how dry the outlying areas are, the fairways were in fantastic shape. Greens were also in great shape and played fairly once you got the feel. Try only complaint and why I didn’t give 5 stars all the way around were their tee boxes. They were not cut very short and obviously needed some weed protection. If they improved their tee boxes, this might be one of the best courses in the SD area.
Still fun
Haven't played here in awhile. Canyon was closed for a tourney and was sent to vineyard/ ranch. Paired with a single and allowed our own carts! Another twosome eventually joined us when it got backed up at the 4th. Still, we were on a 4 hr pace..on a Sunday! The course was in good condition with fast greens.
The only downside was the group behind us asking to play through even though we were on a good pace
Also, there was two groups ahead of us so there was no place for them to proceed. Of course, they were annoyed but too bad.
Will return
Solid challenge course!
Course was a little dry on areas, but the greens were fast and good bunkers were not what I’ve expected… Kind of like dirt, but the overall track is so good… Place a real golfers course…
Played a great round
It was my first time here and the course was not only well kept, the staff was the best part of the visit. I had arrived with a box of donuts to greet the pro-shop staff with, and was greeted by a line of fellow golfers ready to take on the morning. After handing out a few donuts to a few fellow golfers, I gifted the pro-shop with the rest of the donuts. The entire team was great the rest of the visit, and I shot a great round because of it. Thanks for the great start to the weekend!

Course layout was great, but was in poor shape overall for the price
Spent 200 on an afternoon round - but did not feel the price matched the. Condition of the course….have played much nicer courses for much less - the price alone would send me elsewhere based on it.
Great scenery
Lots of force carry from the tee box. Fairways and greens in good shape. Pace of play was great. I paired up with a local couple that helped alot with advice on targets from the tee. Not much sand in bunkers, around 2" but that seems normal for the region. Great day here. Played canyon/ranch. (They have 3-9's)
Nice views, fun course
Enjoyed my round. 1st time playing here. They have 3 9's. Pace of play was great. Alot of force carries on tee shots. Bunkers didn't have much sand meaning a few inches before clay or whatever the base is. That seems common for this region. Fairway and 1st cut well defined, outside of that is more native desert/dry terrain. Most fairways are easily wide enough. Luckily I paired up with a local couple that could give target lines off the tee. Greens were in pretty good shape not alot of ball marks etc.
