Chula Vista Golf Course

I really wanted to like this course because it’s a convenient municipal option, but unfortunately the overall experience fell short on 7/26.

The day started with a confusing and disorganized check-in process. I was assigned to a foursome, but the other players never showed up. The golfer behind me was in the same situation, so we paired up ourselves. Meanwhile, there were several golfers waiting near the golf shop hoping to fill available openings, yet no one coordinated with them. Instead, we were sent to the first tee, and about a hole later those golfers came rushing to catch us after convincing the golf shop staff that our group had open spots. They even missed playing their first hole. A little communication and organization at the starter area would have easily avoided this.

Course conditions were a mixed bag. The greens were actually the strongest part of the course. They were in good condition, rolled consistently, and considering the amount of play this course receives, the maintenance crew deserves credit. They were quite slow (I’d estimate around an 8-9 on the Stimpmeter), but they were predictable.

The fairways, however, need significant attention. There were numerous bare dirt areas, gopher damage, and many uneven lies. Even when my ball was sitting on grass, it was often resting in a depression, making solid iron contact unnecessarily difficult. I also noticed many unrepaired ball marks on the greens. While that’s more a golfer etiquette issue than a maintenance problem, it’s something that affects everyone’s experience.

Pace of play was by far the biggest disappointment. Despite having a 7:06 a.m. tee time, we didn’t actually tee off until about 7:16 because of backups ahead. From there, it was a waiting game on virtually every hole. Our round took more than 5½ hours, which is far too long for one of the first tee times of the morning. On one par 3 there were three foursomes waiting to hit, and during the entire round I never saw a marshal helping keep groups moving.

A few simple improvements could make a noticeable difference. Providing sand-and-seed mix for golfers to repair fairway divots would encourage players to help restore the course. Likewise, using a PA system—or simply improving communication at the golf shop and first tee—would make it much easier to pair singles, fill no-show openings, and keep tee times running efficiently.

I appreciate the work required to operate a busy municipal golf course, and these comments are intended as constructive feedback. The course has potential, especially with its enjoyable green complexes, but better organization, improved pace-of-play management, and continued investment in the fairways would greatly improve the experience.

Typical Chula Vista, it is a cow pasture and it took us 4 hours to play 14 holes. No ambassadors to maintain pace of play.

Hole 3 is now renovated and playable. Adequate sand in bunkers. Starting work on hole 4. Can’t wait for back nine grass by mostly all bunkers to have grass.

I never write reviews, but honestly I can no longer justify paying $65 w/cart on a course that has the worst fairways possible and the pace of play was attrocious! 6hr round! They over booked 4 tee times because of a glitch! There was a 4 some in front of us that never played golf in there life, and hit 4 mulligans off the tee....there was a group of seven behind us, shotgunning beers, smoking bowls, with a little 4 yr old kid riding and playing! There was no oversight at all...I will say good job on trying to repair the fairway on hole 3 but it will be dead in 6mths because the soil is horrible. greens are decent. But other than that I will continue to be playing Bonita, and my home course Enagic. This course has potential...but the strategic investment and repairs needed is far beyond what I can justify in the cost anymore. Wish them all the best, dont waste your money!

Front 9 is definately prettier than the back 9, the layout is long and simple...hit it between the palms on the long holes and you are in play, Course is being worked on and some of the bunkers are lakes at the moment, They are doing a good amount of work on the course so be patient, pace of play is ridiculously slow but everyone is well aware of that amd the staff is very friendly.

I have no qualms about 45 fee to ride here.

In the next 6 to 8 months the place should look pretty bitchin

Greens were in good shape but many of the fairways were either dying, or had large areas of dirt.

Course was really bad shape. Greens were excellent but rest of course lots of dirt and bare patches hardly any grass. Had to find some grass on fairway to make a shot. Was very crowded. Was cheap for a reason would not play again even if free

Probably the cheapest 18 holes with a cart you'll find in San Diego County. Showed up early to eat breakfast at the Bar & Grill but the cook went to break right when we were about to order so we had to wait like 30 minutes before we got our food. Bought a medium basket of range balls and the machine dropped like 15 crappy balls, and it took at least 10 minutes to get a proper basket. Course conditions are not the greatest, a lot of dirt patches in the fairways and off the fairways and some gravel as well. Had to keep moving my ball to the nearest patch of weeds or grass I could find, in order to protect my clubs. Greens were in decent condition. Would definitely play again for the price, but would not recommend it to anyone.

Booked 1:22 tee time and finished at 5:30. Greens are getting better. Adequate sand in bunkers. Tee boxes need grass.

Usually a decent place to play for the price. There was an aerition warning which would usually cause me to skip leaving a bad review. But 13/18 greens are completely covered in sand and unputtable. I wouldn’t recommend this course for at least a week. Previous rounds here have been good. Staff Is solid, pace of play is average for a San Diego weekend. This review is only referring to the current temporary state of the greens.

Came in early and the staff was nice enough to let me start early. Condition was decent on 3/4 of the courses. The remaining was being maintained either with excavation of placing new drain pipes, creating new tee boxes or cutting of trees. I’m just glad that it’s being updated. I can’t wait to comeback how it will look when it’s all done.

First time playing CVGC in over a year. Our tee time was 8:50a. The very first impression I got was climbing into my cart and seeing a bunch of used cigarette butts inside one of the cup holders! Not good. Need to be better with cleaning carts! Secondly, I was surprised by how decent the fairways looked but a few holes still had rough/dirt fairways (Holes 2, 3, & 8). Greens were decent rolling around a 9-10. Tee boxes were ok as well. Bunker I landed in was ok (Hole 4). Pace of play was good, we finished in 4 hrs & 11 min. Decided to check out Slice Society after our round (food orders stop at 2pm; drinks stop serving at 5pm). I ordered Tenders & Fries w/Arnold Palmer. Our server was great and the food was good. Overall, I was expecting worse playing conditions based on my past experiences, but I was pleasantly surprised that the conditions were better than expected. This course has so much potential.
