Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Nice Course
I played the Ranch/Vineyard courses. Ranch was pretty easy considering what the slope says (134 from blue combos). The greens were soft and some had a lot of poorly repaired divot marks. The conditions are otherwise fairly nice and the rough is very playable as they don’t really grow it out. I paid around $50 on a GolfNow deal which seemed like a fair price. They use mats for the driving range which is unfortunate but they don’t have much extra space.
Tough Layout but Fun
Steele Canyon is one of the most formidable golf courses in San Diego. It is worth playing here once if you have confidence in golfing. Conversely golfers with high handicap would be fed up with
the layout (by losing so many balls....). The fairway or green is in good shape. Cold water jars are placed at several holes, a drink cart is going around very often and staffs are very helpful. One thing I noticed was "sand traps"' which should be replenished with new sands. Other than that, This course is very enjoyable and satisfactory.
Great course
Greens rolled extremely smoothly, played the canyon/ranch course and had a great time, elevation changes on every hole added to the fun and shot decisions.....Staff were friendly, overall great time and course, will definitely play again
Awesome as always
This is quickly becoming my favorite course. Always in great shape, always a challenge and you won’t find a friendlier staff.
Great Course
My second time playing here and though it was hot and I didn’t play well; the experience was once again awesome.
Great staff, course in excellent shape, challenging and pace of play was perfect. This is quickly becoming my favorite course.
6 Stars!!!
The entire experience was awesome!
First I’ve never played a course with a friendlier more professional staff and I mean everyone. From start to finish everyone we encountered was very nice and helpful.
The course, we started Canyon/Ranch, is in amazing shape and the veiws are absolutely gorgeous. Very challenging but fair and fun layout. The greens are quick with some very tricky breaks.
We liked that 18 so much we paid for a replay to play Vineyards! 27 holes of awesomeness!!
If I could give this course 6 stars, I would! Great day and I’ll definitely be back.
Another Great Round
Steel Canyon is a blast to play always a challenge for me. Staff is awesome, 19th whole is worth the wait.
Fairway grass very thin. Course was just OK
Bunker sand was either too wet or too deep, greens were good
San Diego Staple for Me
I generally end up at Steele Canyon when I visit my sister in San Diego. I got a great deal through Golfnow - $35 for a 12:15 tee time midweek. The place was empty so I went out as a single and played 18 holes in about 2 1/2 hours. So I went out for another 9 holes and paid $25 for the extra nine. Greens were pretty quick, and the conditions were pretty good. There is a lot of elevation change, and there are definitely some tight driving holes.
Best popular price course in the San Diego Area.
Out of towners pay a slight premium to play this track.
Good course in a valley like surroundings
WE wish for the price they charge they would have GPS system to make it a bit easier to see some hidden greens/pins.
If no GPS but a paper sourse lay out. We wanted to play canyon course but were denied the privilege.
Overall good place.
San Diego’s top 10; No.
Steele Canyon quietly restructured their pricing and raised their normal rates. The course layout is ok for the most part but some holes are just garbage and just not fun — wish I could skip around the 3 courses to just play certain holes. The staff have their “noses in the air” and really make the initial check-in feel like non-member are second class citizens. I’m willing to spend some cash to play but don’t talk down to me if I ask a question. It’s really hot in Rancho San Diego and zero breeze. If the forecast says 20% chance for showers, you can bet that it’s raining at the canyon. If you have “older folks” behind you, they have NO problem trying to drop darts within 15 feet of you and your buddies if someone duffs it from the tee and is taking their second shot; they’re firing off from the closest tees. Then, they ask to pass, you considerately say yes (for cordiality and for safety concerns) but then you have Bonnie & Clyde “Sunday Driving” and your round just added a solid 40 minutes with frustrating waits as granny tries to put from the fairway!
For the money I was spending to play there every Saturday for a few months I decided to take my money to Riverwalk and signed up for a membership! What a world of difference. Granted, there are some “patchy” areas but if you can “hit it hard” you CANNOT beat it. And playing rounds for $11... it’s the obvious choice for San Diego golf. I would rank value/quality like this: (SD Resident Card) Torrey & Balboa, (the reservations with discounts) Sycuan/Barona, then (GolfNow or call pro shop) Riverwalk. North County has many to choose from but for value/quality I would only go Golf Club of CA, or Crossings. I deleted Steele Canyon from my favorites in all GPS apps.
A solid course
I would say this course is a little overrated but definitely one of the top courses in the San Diego area. Greens are some of the best in the area. Just need some work on the fairways and a lot of work on the bunkers. Also some tips on the holes with blind shots wouldn't hurt either for first time players!
Overall a solid course with a great layout. Make sure you play the canyon course. I'd say it has the most character.
