Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

The course somewhat challenging and had a nice layout in the hills

We played the Vineyard and Canyon courses and enjoyed both of them. Although the yardage was not that long (3200 for black tees), the layout was somewhat challenging and enjoyable. The fairway grass needed a little attention, but the greens were in good shape. Overall I enjoyed it and would play it again. The Canyon course had a lot of elevation changes and majority of the holes were away from homes. I think the regular rate is a little steep for the course, but would play again on a discounted rate.

Never a bad day

Even after all the rain the course was in great shape. Greens were fast and as always tough to read.

For my money the best course in San Diego. I actually became a member I like it so much.

Steele Canyon

About as good as can be expected for January. Greens were excellent. Fairways need some help.

Real issue is what I got for the price I paid. I'll be spending my money elsewhere.

Winter golf is the best

Weekends are usually slow everywhere except private courses. However, for public places during football season, you can find courses empty where you can complete a round in 4 1/2hrs.

I've played all three courses here so I know the layout. Very challenging and fun. Fairways are a bit arid but the sand & greens we're ok. Twosomes everywhere sped up the pace. Never saw any cartperson or Marshall.

I would always go back because this course is fun to play

Beautiful course with immaculate conditioning

Played Canyon/Ranch combo on Monday, December 17. Great course on a picture perfect day. Pace was excellent and staff unfailingly polite. The course conditions were A+. Fairways were gorgeous and greens were perfect (super quick). I would recommend this course to anyone, though it would be wise to move up a set of tees; somewhat tight at times due to the tracking through canyons. If we're back in San Diego, will definitely play again. GolfAdvisor gave us a bit of discount vs the rates offered by the course.

Very nice course

Played the Black Knight Tee’s at Rancho & Vineyard. Very nice course tucked back in the canyons. True greens, tough pins but forgiving fairways. Don’t be fooled by the short par 4’s and bring an accurate long iron/fairway wood for the par 3’s. Can’t really say a bad thing about this course, even the bunkers were manageable...I’d definitely play again.

Birthday Round revised

I went there on my birthday and some tee times got mixed up. I ended up playing by myself and I left a bad review. I probably shouldn't have and tried to take it down but there is no way for me to do that. I called the online booking site that I use and they told me that they cannot take down any reviews either.

The course called me and made me more than happy. They really seem to care about their customer's happiness.

My birthday round

I booked my tee time online. There was a twosome that had already reserved 7:18am so I joined them. It was my birthday so I wanted to play a nice course, which Steele Canyon definitely is.

Once I'd paid my green fees I went to get my cart and join the other golfers on the tee box. The starter told me that he was going to have to send me out by myself because the people who'd booked 7:18 arrived an hour early and were already playing. I told him that it was my birthday and that I didn't want to play all by myself. He was very nice but there was nobody that he could put me with. So I went back into the pro shop and explained my situation. I wanted a refund so that I could go play at another course and join some other golfers. They had no sympathy for me whatsoever and said that the best that they could do was a raincheck. A RAINCHECK ON MY BIRTHDAY??? I'd just paid 5 minutes ago. So I went back out, got into my cart and played 18 holes all by myself. I caught up with a 3-some but they said they were in a tournament and could not join them. A 3-some caught up with me and told me the same thing. I sent an email to the course telling them what happened and got no reply. I find it hard to believe that they could be so hard up as to not be able to refund me my $84 so that I could play somewhere else. I'm not a member but I do play there occasionally with my friends. I will not be playing there again and neither will my buddies. They should have replied and given me a free round or something because they ruined my birthday.
