Course Highlights
The three-nine layout delivers dramatic elevation changes and stunning scenery that consistently impress golfers unfamiliar with San Diego's hilly terrain. Friendly staff and well-maintained greens that hold up even after heavy rains make this course a reliable, rewarding choice.

Rating 71.8

Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul offers three unique nines: Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch. Gary Player designed all 27 holes, which are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The courses are considered some of the best golf in southern California. The Canyon/Vineyard combination starts with dramatic elevation changes and then transitions into the subtler nuances of the Vineyard nine. The hilly front nine demands accuracy and golfers should be prepared for some uneven lies. The Vineyard nine doesn't get any easier either with several water hazards and many holes that play directly into the prevailing winds. The Vineyard's sixth hole is one of Steele Canyon's hardest. This lengthy par 5 measures 582 yards from the back tees and requires a forced carry over a dry creek bed on your third shot.

Group of 5 ruined round

We had to leave with 3 holes left after 4.5 hours already. It would have taken us over an hour to finish. There were 5 groups on holes 7 and 8 of Ranch. When we left, we drove by these groups and noticed a group of 5 on the green of 8. There were no groups on the long par 5 9th hole. Noone was even clearing the green. A hole that should have had 3 groups on it had none. That group of 5 delayed 5 groups by over an hour. Long waits between holes makes it difficult to stay loose. When you pay $130 for a round, you don't expect to wait 15 mins between shots and rounds to take 6 hours. Terrible experience

Good but could be so much better

If they sank some more money into the course it could be 5 star. VERY slow play.

Love Golf? Play Here

We played three rounds in four days and ran into perfect weather and excellent course conditions each day. It's an excellent, challenging design, with long sloping downhill par fives, greens that will test your putter--no two holes are alike, something I love about any golf course that can achieve it. The greens were top notch. At $150-160 a round, it sits just on the edge of affordability to me, but we came to San Diego to play and are very happy we spent our money at Steele Canyon. There are good reasons to play Torrey if you can get on, but this course is more fun, more accessible, without the legendary Torrey rough to deal with.

Good layout. Poor course maintenance.

Super fun, layout many challenging holes. Waiting on every Teebox for a 5 1/2 hour run is no fun. I’m sure because it was a weekend it would be busy, but better spacing would be desired. Staff was more than courteous and everyone we met on the course, we’re very professional and friendly

Worth it

I played on Veterans Day with a few friends. Yes it it a little more expensive than other courses but worth it. Simply driving in and seeing the club house and chipping area I knew I was in for a good round. Everything about this course is amazing. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Absolutely Pure

My first time playing Steele canyon and this place was breathtaking. I played Canyon/Ranch. First and foremost the greens can make or break a golf course in my opinion and these greens were true and so pure. The fairways were manicured and the rough was thick but not annoyingly so. The staff was great and went out of there way, one of them actually shuttled me from my car to the clubhouse. To be fair I think my timing was on point. Can’t wait to play again. My new favorite spot in San Diego.

Very challenging

My first time playing here. Went off on the Canyon course and the back nine was the vineyard course. This place is a cut above other courses. The grounds are beautiful and the area and scenery are spectacular. Luckily i was grouped with three other folks that had played here before. Had I been on my own there was a few holes where i didn't know how to get to the next hole. No signs to help with this. Lots of travel thru neighborhoods to find your way to the next hole. The course itself was very challenging. Bring extra balls.

I had a great round with great people. Personally i think they charge too much. No GPS on the carts which really isn't a deal breaker. By no means can you walk this course. A cart is a must. Would I come back? I would but if only someone else paid for my green fee. Too many other courses around that charge half as much.

Pace of play caused us to leave

Tried to take my dad out for a special round. The starter was the nicest guy and got the day rolling. We played behind slow groups. Left after 14 holes at 4.5 hour mark. Would have taken 5+ hours to play. Enformed pro behind counter and he could care less.

Steele Canyon

Played Canyon and Vineyard 9's. Course was in best condition I have seen it. Greens and fairways were in good condition. The tee grasses were not consistent in type or height, and the bunkers were in awful shape---hard sand that hadn't been raked in awhile. But, our foursome played in 4 hours. Course is in a very quiet area with nice mountain and rural views. Enjoyed our round!

Not a Good Value

For $175 per person, this course is not in shape for that price. The layout of the course is great. But the tee boxes, fairways, and greens need to be kept in better shape for that price point. I would much rather pay it bit more to go play Maderas.
