Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Vineyard
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul offers three unique nines: Canyon, Vineyard, and Ranch. Gary Player designed all 27 holes, which are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The courses are considered some of the best golf in southern California. The Canyon/Vineyard combination starts with dramatic elevation changes and then transitions into the subtler nuances of the Vineyard nine. The hilly front nine demands accuracy and golfers should be prepared for some uneven lies. The Vineyard nine doesn't get any easier either with several water hazards and many holes that play directly into the prevailing winds. The Vineyard's sixth hole is one of Steele Canyon's hardest. This lengthy par 5 measures 582 yards from the back tees and requires a forced carry over a dry creek bed on your third shot.

Canyon & Ranch
We enjoyed the Canyon course but not so much the Ranch 9. I’d be interested to play the Vineyard 9 to try it.
Day well spent
The only thing I can say is go play here! The layout is tremendous(Canyon/Vineyard 9's), the staff was GREAT, the conditions were really, really good, and it was a course I would absolutely play again if in the area. There were a few tight holes off of the tee, but overall you had room to miss a bit, the greens rolled very nicely, and the views were tremendous.
Challenging Topography and Course
Played for the first time. Found the course to be both challenging and interesting with each hole. Course does require player to have some reasonable accuracy with most shots. Several holes demand the ability to cross open space filled with dense brush. Basically you hit out of bounds or land in barranca the ball is lost.
The topography lead to many exciting holes that had elevation changes of 50 to 150 feet.
For people who enjoy nature we noticed at least 7 birds you typically do not see elsewhere including road runners.
Since we were all first timers there were a few holes that were hard to determine were the best location to shoot for.
All in all a very enjoyable course.
Amazing views
Elevated tee boxes, in the mountains, challenging course. Manny the starter was unbelievable. He welcomed us to the course, told us about the best holes . Friendly staff all over . 5 stars for Manny .
I was unhappy with the pairings
I had never played this course so I was very excited. The pro shop staff was very friendly and accommodating. What I was not happy about was that I had booked a single. Once I found out I was playing with a threesome instead of have two of them ride together and two single carts I was paired with their third. They all drank alcohol and I have been sober for three years. They also were on a very different playing level which meant I had to chase around their missed shots and poor playing etiquette. I smoke cigarettes and the guy they had riding with me was wearing a gallon of cologne. All in all it made for a poor round. Every other course I’ve ever played would have the single booked player in his own cart as he is not part of a booked theesome. No offense to my playing partners but a lot of my frustration would have been avoided if I was in my own cart! I’m very reluctant to book here again. The layout was great , some of the greens were chewed up very bad and tee boxes over grown. For the price I was definitely expecting more.
In My personal top 5 around San Diego
What you’d expect from a good course and some more. In good condition and well maintained.
Nice layout with a good degree of difficulty to accommodate any skill level.
Steele Canyon
What a beautiful course. I only have two bad things to say. Bachelor party slowed pace of play (understandable, after he marries he won’t be able to golf much anymore) and tee box set up for 2 of the starts are right next to each other confused us. Greens were fast and accurate. Tee boxes were mostly flat. Staff was great.
Greens are in need of help!
There are so many ball marks on the greens, like too many to even count, which really affects putting. Why are golfers not bothering to fix their ball marks? Not fixing your ball marks is so rude. For such an amazing course~ this was sad to see.
Challenging with great views
From first tee I knew it was going to be a fun round. Had the opportunity to get a round in and this course did not disappoint with the many elevation changes to the speed of the greens. I will definitely like to get another round in now knowing layup distances and course layout. The pro-shop was real helpful in getting in and out with range facilities and some course condition information as this what my first time playing this course.
Awesome Track
Beautiful Track, Beautiful Weather, Beautiful Scenery, Awesome course conditions! The greens were darn near perfect. Friendly Staff
Really fun track
The course lay out is a lot of fun, challenging at some points without being brutal. Really nice views of desert mountains in east county San Diego and the staff were all very friendly. Good use of hilly land with some big downhills that you can go for it on. Only real complaint was that the greens had a lot of wear and tear at points looking completely pock marked. Might just be that it’s late in the summer, but If I paid $100+ like this course asks for on weekends, I would be annoyed. For the weekday twilight rate, it was great.
Elevation marvel
Superb golf destination. Fairways pristine. Greens and tee boxes pure. I’ll be back.
5 some has a great day
Played in just over 4 hours & enjoyed everything about it. Lots of character
Great Course
This course is in excellent condition and plays tough. The best most friendliest staff there is. It is on the pricier side, but you get what you pay for!
Superb venue
Bag attendants great. Starter not hospitable. Pro shop indifferent. Food service wonderful.
Great course
