Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.

This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.

That is just part of the reason this course totes a 145 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.

There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.

Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

Not Good

Greens are in terrible shape. Rough needs to be cut down a lot. Hard to find balls just off fairway. They made you pay extra for range balls when the course was already overpriced for the conditions. Don’t play here rite now

Good course but rough needs attention

Played the course not long after it reopened. Was generally in very good condition but the rough had been left a little too long and as a result, balls could be hard to find - keep it on the fairway then, I hear you say!! Two gripes - firstly it was cart path only which I can understand following overseeding and secondly, partly as a result of the first gripe, the pace of play was quite slow and despite starting at 12:35, had to miss out last two holes as it was dark.

Would return and play again though.

poor course

due to the cart path only left a lot of blind landings, you see where your ball landed. The ruff was too long for this course, we lost and found balls in the ruff. The greens were too hard and wouldn't hold good shots My gap wedge landed on the green and ended up 30 yards past the back of the green .Don't waste your money on this course.........

Very Good Track - Just two days after reopening post over-seeding

We played Desert Falls just 2 days after they re-opened after annual over-seeding. The rough was still being cut down and the greens were a bit fuzzy but overall we liked the course. Laid out well. Staff and amenities excellent.

The course was not in great shape. The rough was very high.

Also on the day we played, it was cart path only. It was a lot of walking that we didn't expect to do. Only found out it was cart path only when we arrived at the course.

The staff was great--very courteous and friendly.

The course layout was good. The back nine was quite a bit more difficult due to the high rough.

Could be a Great Course - But not today!

Played this course shortly after it reopened from over-seeding, so keep that in mind. BUT, it would have been nice to know the limitations of the course before shelling out $120 for a round.

Biggest Issues: The rough was just too long and unfair. I lost 5 balls that were slightly off the fairway (within 10 yards) because they buried down in the rough. I know that sounds stupid, but in the bright morning sun, we'd lose the view of the ball on drives before it landed and so it was not that easy to know exactly where to look. But really, it should not be THAT hard.

Also, the greens were not in good shape. Lots of spaces without grass and then bumpy from the manner in which they were mowed.

Also, where the rough was mowed, the clippings were left behind makin additional mess. The same was true for many fairways.

Smaller beefs: we had the 7:18 tee time and there was little to no help around. The starter was not there yet and one guy was getting carts and clubs and balls and he was having trouble getting folks out. NOTE: Range balls NOT included in the $120 price, and the $6 i paid for 30 balls got me the saddest looking range balls i have ever seen - one was even cut clear through.

SO, we liked the layout, it is pleasing to the eye, fun to pay (if not in the rough) but just not ready for play on November 6, and definitely not worth $120.

First time here

Not sure what they are doing with the course but greens were very rough and must have let the first cut get too tall and clumps of grass everywhere and second cut was really tall. Liked the layout but is is pretty bad shape . Would play elsewhere until the course improves their condition.

Still growing back in

Just opened after new grow in. Needs more time to fill in the fairways and greens. The ruff was very deep. Difficult to find balls. Recent fairway cut had lots of grass clumped up everywhere. Sand traps were in need of sand. Very then and clumped up. No on course service. Service at the turn was bad. Very slow. Person could not run the register.
