Desert Falls Country Club
About
Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.
This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.
That is just part of the reason this course totes a 145 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.
There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.
Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

COURSE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT RED, WHITE AND BLUE IS
RED FLAG = FRONT OF GREEN
WHITE FLAG = CENTER OF GREEN
BLUE FLAG = BACK OF GREEN.
Can't tell where the pin is located. They have YELLOW FLAGS on every green regardless of where the hole is.
Most of the course is dried out, dead, compacted turf. It's like playing your ball off of concrete. The course needs aeration. A machine that punches holes on the compacted grass on the fairways (everywhere in this case).
Challenging but fun course.
Have not played Desert Falls for number of years and this course always been one of my favorites in the Coachella Valley. Looks like the grass is going through the transitional stage but for 49 dollars, what more can I ask for.
Will definitely return.
Fantástico
My group played this course in May 23.
Brought my second group to play it June13.
Will definitely come back.
You Get What You Pay For
While the rest of the desert courses are still very green and well manicured, this track has lost its way. Inconsistent cuts, no amenities, poor/lack of maintenance throughout. Seems like the ownership or course management has given up. Reminds me of a course slowly dying.
Overpriced
Played here after playing a round day before at Shadow Hills & this place was more expensive and less deserving. No starter, no Marshall, no beverage cart.
great golf course
this is a great golf course! First time playing here. The only reason I gave the course conditions a 4 star is because a lot of the greens in certain spots have either bacteria on them which I hope they're trying to get rid of or burnt sun spots. Otherwise, great course and lay out!
Joke
I have never left a review for anything, but felt compelled this time.
An absolute joke! No bag drop, Clubhouse closed, no signage to know where to go. No starter. Paid $6 for a tiny basket of range balls. 25% of them were cut open. Asked for a towel and they told me to buy a towel in the pro shop. The course condition was horrible. We quit at the turn. Will never return.
Hear me out
Let me start by saying I’m not a Karen and I’m no your pro either… BUT… I grew up in Palm Springs and worked at golf courses for 15+ years so I’ve got a little insight.
The course itself is a fun track there is no denying that… that being said it is very dry with certain parts of the fairway almost unplayable with how hard and dried out they are. The greens are very very firm… super difficult given some of the pin locations today but overall in good shape just hard to get some deeper approach shots to hold.
Club house is closed due to remodeling so I’ve got no comment on that. The standup version they have downstairs was serviceable. Staff in the proshop and snack bar were very nice and seemed happy to help.
Now the only true negative was the pace of play. It was downright horrific. We were the 814am tee time and made our way to the first tee around 8ish just to be ready. We were in line behind 10 other carts (obviously backed up) … no starter in sight… then as my threesome got up to tee off around 835 the 806 tee time simply pulls up… goes to the forward tee’s and fires away with zero acknowledgment we were already in the back boxes.
I’ll save you some time reading and just say it got no better after that as far as pace of play. There were multiple 5somes and three or four separate twosomes who were slowing the entire course up and there was no marshal or pro staff making an attempt to hurry them along. It is a tough track yes but some folks should be helped along so that we don’t have to watch them take 10-15 strokes on a longer par 3 without a warning. 2hr 30min front half… 2hr 45 on the back. Made for a long day. I’d definitely come back but hopefully they have some control of pace during the winter.
I’d recommend the course just make sure you don’t have much else planned for the day.
A Nice Surprise
Great views. Challenging but fair holes. Great value. Good staff. Good practice areas.
I have loved playing Desert Falls since the late 70s. Always a lot of fun. Course in good shape, 3 of played in 3.5 hours. Only negative is restaurant and snack closed
