Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.
This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.
That is just part of the reason this course totes a 145 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.
There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.
Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

Nice course/bad traps
This was a fun course to play and a good value for the cost. The greens and fairways were in excellent condition and the pace of play was good. The only downside was the bunkers are terrible. Hard pan and had many pebbles in them. However, this will not prevent me from recommending or playing again.
Nice Course, Great Condition, Plenty of Scorecards
Played this one today for the first time. Facilities are nice. Had to buy range balls, but balls in the chipping and putting areas are free. Course was in excellent shape and it's pretty challengin too. For the price i'd play it before some of the way more expensive resort courses. Moved along just fine. Strongly recommend.
Fun Course
Nice layout. A bit challenging if you are having a tough day with the driver. Greens were a bit on the slow side.
Challenging water holes
The course is in pretty good shape for this time of year. The course has multiple water holes and the greens are smaller than other higher rated courses. I’d play there again. A negative was the scorecards were printed on paper and didn’t show course layout. I’m guessing they were out of regular scorecards.
Busy afternoon
After 1:00 PM tee box was busy. I would suggest that someone finds some white paint and paints the white t box markers
Poor value for money
We played Saturday morning. Pro shop staff not friendly. No food services. $15 for a large bucket of balls. Bought a sandwich from Beverage Cart - totally soggy and very expensive. Course condition was mediocre. I don’t mind paying for quality golf and service, but this was poor all around. Won’t book again.
Nice course but few amenities
A nice, well designed course that we are likely to play again. However, there are three holes that someone new to the course are probably going to have trouble with. No adequate maps of the course or holes. No distance markers after the tee. The members know the course but paying guests are going to struggle.
No food or beverage cart. No drinking water.
