Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.

This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.

That is just part of the reason this course totes a 128 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.

There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.

Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

Desert Falls

The course wasn’t in great condition. On the 1st hole I couldn’t tell it was a lay up until I drove up to find my ball. It was in the water. Not a great way to start the round. Lots of brown areas in the fairways.

Poor conditions/layout

Sand traps hard as a rock

Lake water levels low and lots of ugly mud wringing the .lakes

Couldn’t see lakes from fairway so hit into them

Many large brown spots on fairways

No signs telling where the golf shop was. Had to walk around aimlessly to find it. Also no one answered the phone at the bag drop so they couldn’t tell me how to find it

Challenging course with hills and views

We arrived early and got out early! Great for a hot day. Nice challenge and wide fairways. Staff was super friendly and helpful.

Course was average in all regards compared to other comparable tracks such as Escena, Indian Canyons south or Desert Willows. Speed of play was ranked high as I played by myself with few other groups on the course

Wide open, needs GPS to navigate

First time playing Desert Falls, and most of the reviews got it right. Without GPS on the carts, playing here is a crap shoot, lots of big bunkers and water hazards to skyrocket your score. Bunkers around the greens had very little sand and we're almost unplayable. Big wide open fairways with fair rough areas. Conditions everywhere but the traps was better than average. I probably won't play here again for over $60.

Tricky greens

Greens were about 9 because of dramatic slopes on the greens per the pro shop.

They were somewhat slow and definitely had some big slopes!

Course conditions were very good. Greens were true and consistent. The fairways had some patchy spots, however in good condition. At tee time check in staff was not very friendly or eager to engage in a conversation. Would be back to play the course again

Great golf course.

I have played here many times pre pandemic. The biggest thing I noticed was no free golf balls on the driving range any more. This cheapens the overall experience of what used to be a very classy golf course.

Twilight Round

Seems like a good course for people starting out in golf. The course was a bit rough for this time of year compared to surrounding courses. I had a 3:45pm tee time. As I arrived I was informed the cart needed to be returned by 6:30. Fortunately, I was able to tee off at 3:15 and ended up finishing 18 around 6pm. I went out as a single and only ran into the group in front of me on 17&18. Overall worked out for me for as an after work impromptu tee time. For $75 there are better courses in better shape. Its a fun course, just needs a little love.

Not great…

Tee boxes were rough, bunkers were garbage. Had a 9:40 tee time, no place to grab a quick bite to eat or beverage. Played the front, still nobody in the grill to grab a beverage or a snack. Played all 18 and no beverage cart. Would not recommend to anyone

Very nice course!

We always play Desert Falls when we’re on holiday here. The course has a great layout, some really interesting holes and is well maintained. The mountain backdrop is everywhere and is spectacular.

Wish the good and beverage environment was a bit better, but the golf course makes up for it.
