Washoe Golf Course

About
Founded in 1917, Washoe Golf Course is the oldest golfing facility in Reno. The layout has small greens and tree-lined fairways, but the fairways are wide and flat making them fairly forgiving. There are water hazards and bunkers strategically placed throughout. The mature landscape is carefully maintained with an elaborate sprinkler system that ensures that the course is green and ready for play all year round. Washoe Golf Course also has PGA Professionals on staff to help with individual or group instruction and extensive practice facilities that include a generous putting green, driving range, and a chipping area with practice bunker.

Washoe
Have been playing this course since 1975. Classic, old style course first built in the 1930s.
Not always in the best of condition but always a pleasure to play and the staff is always pleasent.
Basic and not groomed
I was there for work and it was a pretty basic course. Felt like I was just hitting balls into a HS football field. The people that worked at the course was GREAT and so was the group I was with. My complaint was purely on the course condition. Even the regulars of the course who were in my group were stating that this place just isn't well kept. The bunkers are like cement or just full of mud. The fairways are extremely muddy (in summer) that me and one of the group members actually were slipping in our swings. 3.5 out of 10 or 1.5 out of 5. It just wasn't a good experience on the course.
Needs some TLC
We play here frequently and still wondering why some basic maintenance isn't being done. Weeds growing at the perimeter of bunkers and some with standing water. Dead branches needing removed. Mowed tee boxes. My tee shot on 9 was in a mud puddle in the fairway. Greens and most fairways are in good shape, so it doesn't make sense why other care can't be done.
This Once Jewel is No More
Yes and evidently this was once the jewel of golf courses in Reno, but alas it’s not anymore. We (threesome) played 9 holes in over 21/2 hours. Two of my threesome left after 9 holes, clearly knowing and seeing the back 9 not getting any better. No Marshal and no help with managing the speed of play or lack thereof. The course is also unfortunately in dire state of irrelevance. Sorry but the course is not getting the maintenance it deserves. I believe it is only minimally functional due to the tolerance and support of the mainly “old timers” who seem to not be bothered by the conditions. Many courses in the Reno Central area have closed or repurposed and I suspect that this previous “jewel” is perhaps the next. Nostalgia is about the only thing keeping this course relevant.
Prime property in central Reno where housing shortage is a growing problem could possibly be a reason for the purposeful lack of interest in maintaining this “jewel” of days gone by!
Staff are typically very helpful and cordial but they are not the ones making the management decisions.
Pace was extremely slow no marshals had several groups in front of us and had several groups behind us couldn’t get anywhere fast had the group behind us hit into us twice almost starting a fight just rude!
Loved my first time at this course
In town for a convention for my wife and I'm trying out the local courses. I didn't know what to expect from the local muni, but was pleasantly surprised. Course is in great shape. Lots of crew working around the course and it shows. Greens were great. They're somewhat small by today's course standards, but that adds the needed difficulty considering the fairways are pretty wide open.
I tee'd off at 6:44 AM so pace was awesome. Finished in 3:50.
Slowwwwww
Reasonable muni course in fairly good condition. Played on a Saturday and it took almost 5.5 hours.
Back 9 is very interesting
I have played the front 9 before but yesterday I played 18 for the first time. It is like two different courses. The course will challenge you to shape your tee shots and hit into small greens tucked away in the trees. The greens were slow but consistent, and the fairways were surprisingly lush after many rainy days. A real joy and a good value.
