Originally designed by Floyd McFarkland, Pajaro Valley Golf Club has large Monterey Pines lining its generous rolling fairways. Elevated tees provide scenic views of the Pajaro Valley below. Opened in 1922 and redesigned in 1962 by Robert Muir Graves, the course features small bentgrass greens and four ponds with water in play on three holes. The fourth is one of the course's most challenging holes, a 420-yard par 4 with triple-tiered green. The course also was once the home of former U.S. Open champion Olin Dutra, who spent the last part of his career teaching here.

Needs Updating

Club house needs a major renovation. Greens were great 2 weeks ago, now they're bumpy with hard pan spots. With a little TLC, Pajaro could be a top notch course. Still a great value. Played for $32 with a cart on the weekend and got in all 18 holes with daylight to spare.

Great Conditions

Much to my surprise the course was in really great shape. With the drought having such an effect of all golf courses it was nice to see plush green grass everywhere. Even the driving range was looking good.

Please repair cart paths

Although the employees are very friendly and the golf course is in a nice setting, the course can use some "tender loving care" - The cart paths have big holes that need repairing and it is really easy to lose your ball because of high grass. They were working on some of the greens also. I really hope they don't allow this course to go downhill. If I hadn't received a discount on my play, I would have been very disappointed in price for value.

Nice, But....

I played July 14 2014, I have been here a few times before and like the course.
I will say that the club house, parking lot and overall shape of the grounds is getting worse. the actual course is still pretty good.

Bad Condition

Carts died on us twice.. Took them over 20 min to replace.. Wasn't able to finish because of it.. Didn't really offer anything in return for the hassle and bad experience.. They said "register was already closed".. Don't think we'll be going back there when back down in Santa Cruz / Monterey Bay Area..

Greens and Carts?

Pajaro is a fun, sporty track and they often have very good deals (we paid $30 w/cart on GN). But the greens, which the course says have been named the "best in Monterrey Co." on their phone message, were hardly that and I have seen them in much better shape in the past.
I also, extraordinarily, would say their carts need work. The first cart I was given had almost no brakes which I found out when I went out to the parking lot to get our clubs and wound up over a curb and in a bush. The second cart I got had a lot of play in the steering wheel and made for an exciting day of driving around the course.

4th of July

We went out early morning in the fog. Not to many people and the pace was steady. Love this course for the value and long fairways. Would recommend to a friend and will be back again.

Course needs better management

The staff is not on top of things. They collect a deposit for the cart fees. When you return the key for the cart they give you back your deposit. At the end of our round, they didn't have enough case to give us for two cart keys. How does that happen? VERY LAME.

pro shop issues

We've played here many times and the pro shop and related services are going downhill. No cards or pencils on the carts, no cards in the pro shop, no one calls players to the tee, the carts consistently run out of juice at the turn or before. Price is excellent for a fun and challenging course. We wish they would get their guest services together.

used to be a great course...what happened?

Pajaro used to be a gem and a value that was very high on a lot of my friends list..however, recently, the greens got some disease and they were terrible...the owner took steps to fix the greens and made some changes...but now has raised prices..I feel this course is not in good enough shaped to be charging $50...the owner is making his patrons pay for his mistake..several media outlets report how many people are getting out of the game due to high prices of tee times and equipment..I would not recommend this course to anyone..in fact, I steer them to other area courses..

Pajaro Valley Golf Course

Excellent relaxing day. It was a little cool to be out in shorts, but the round was excellent. I shot a 77 that day, as everything seem to go at the pin, but my partner struggled. It is a varied course with a lot of undulations.

A lot different then two years ago/Is Pajaro Valley going out of business?

Arrived for 10:00 Tee time at 0930, was told that had to give a key deposit, and wife wanted to ride aong, but was not golfing, was told had to pay an additional $17 for her and with the $4 deposit came to $21, I was also told by the starter I would be called for my tee time, which never happened, as a matter of fact, many of the golfers there were confused, because the starter was not calling the groups to start either, at 10:10 I went in to find out about starting, and was informed that I could have started on the back nine first, I played the back nine then went to play the front 9, which went equally as bad. Would I play there again? Maybe, in a couple of years, I found several things that did not seem right when I went back after 2 years, first the pro shop was empty and bare, really no merchandise to sell, and the restraunt had fewer tables then I remember. Hole number 5 was an improvement, the improved landing zone was great. One other thing that was different then before, there were no towels to dry your ball after running them through the ball washer, kinda sad. I would have given a much higher score, but many of the folks I ran into, expressed the same feeling.

Classic Monterey County Golf

Serene and a bit magical this rolling curving course may be a bit crusty on the far edges during the drought but if you keep it down the middle and around the greens it is in very nice condition and a very good challenge of all the shots in your bag. This course rates with Aptos, Pacific Grove and Laguna Seca as must play idyllic Monterey golf with monster trees and the design married to the natural contours of the basic headwaters of Elkhorn Slough which ends at Moss Landing and the Pacific Ocean. Great views of that (no ocean views) on the back nine. Only negative as of now is that the bunkers are a bit inconsistent with some a bit thin on sand but it looks like they are upgrading them with the addition of sand where needed on most.

Edit on my first review

Once again I want to say that Carts if you use them are should be upgraded and the greens have improved but need to be cut to improve the speed of the ball. Carts are few and far between when needed. They are not ready when you need them and sometimes they die on you. On the course you sometimes see 1 or 2 that literally ran out of power. I gather their batterys need to be replaced as they are not keeping their charge. Other than that it is a good value if you join the membership or when you look on GolfNow
