Jimmy Clay Golf Course
About
Jimmy Clay Golf Course opened in 1974 with a 6,931 yard Joe Finger design that incorporates Williamson Creek. This track is flat as well, and is noted for its generous fairways and large, elevated greens. The first and last holes are perhaps the most memorable. No. 1 serves up a blind approach shot over a hill into a skinny green, and the 400-yard doglegged 18th plays into the wind with water on the left side.

Not Bad For A Hot Day, 101'
Hot and busy. It took us almost 5 hours but it was moving, not log jammed just busy. Staff was friendly. Food was the average bar/ballpark food but good. For as hot and dry as it was the course was in great shape; green grass on the tees, fairways, and greens. Just a couple of patchy spots. Greens are a little longer and slow because of the heat.
Greens need a lot of work
The overall course layout was nice but almost every green has all sorts of sand and patches with no grass that makes putting next to impossible. Definitely worth it to play kizer instead for the few extra dollars. Course was relatively shady but those greens were terrible.
Nice course, Slow Ride
Booked a single for 7:28am to try to get a round in quickly. Got paired up with a beginner golfer of 4 months. No big deal. We started slow but got moving after second hole. Caught up to foursome in front of us then it went downhill from there. Finished round 4.5hrs later at Noon. No Marshall at all to speed things up. Course was in great shape despite a couple of rough greens. Actually paid $5 less than what I booked for online! Can't beat that.
Course is great for all level golfers.
For a muni, the course is great. Greens are a little rough but doesnt keep me from playing it. From the tips, it can be a real challenge.
course looks great!
Keeps looking better each week. Great staff. Fun to play and practice.
Enjoyable course
Fun course to play, some of the holes on the first 9 aren't as well kept as I would like but the back 9 is awesome
Good Traditional Round
Jimmy Clay is a traditional layout. It is an older, established course under the City of Austin. Due to recent rains the fairways are in good shape. Most of the greens are still suffering from patchy grass and inconsistent roll--better than about 6 weeks ago--but too many still in need of restoration. It was a very good round under the "fire sale" price. The normal fees would be a little steep for the quality of play.
poor customer service
The course is beautiful but the office staff came across as "snobby"
Oh, the greens! So sad...
This is a fairly easy and fun to play course, and would get a higher review but the greens are mostly unplayable. There are maybe six greens out of 18 that we're worth putting on. The rest were in very bad shape. I can see they are working hard to recover them. I understand the hard freezes this winter and the drought were big factors. I'll be back when their fixed, but will avoid it until then. The Kizer course next door though us in superb condition. Playing there next week. Highly recommend
Poor Greens
With as much water as we've had in the last few months, I would have expected Jimmy Clay to be in much better shape. All be two of the greens need to be replaced. Aside from the company and the beer, I was extremely disappointed with the course.
Good value
Found a great deal on Golfnow. Fairways in good shape but most greens were very rough.
Nice fairways
Good condition except the greens which are having problems
Poor Conditions
Went out for a round at Clay, had not played it in 6 months or so. The greens were very poor with most of them with very little grass and some were like putting on the face of the moon. The speed of each one was different and honestly most should be closed till they get some grass on them. I moved balls on 4 greens to the same distance just so there would be some semi-smooth ground (not grass) so I could have some chance at a putt. Not a word was said at the pro shop.
Playing Jimmy Clay
Had a great time with this 18 hole course. One of the best features Is no hole is the same. I had to use every club in the bag at some point during the round. Will go back
Poor greens
The greens were in poor condition with lots of bare spots and barely any grass.
Looking forward to playing again
Played with a buddy (his first time) and we both enjoyed the course. It's always been a hidden gem of Dove Springs. Everything was well-maintained and the only reason it wasn't 5-stars is because of the greens. I overheard there was a fungi issue effecting the greens, and it was very noticeable. Hopefully they can get a grasp on it. Great course for a Muni!
Still Trying At Jimmy Clay
Between disease, drought, and God knows what else, it's been an up and down few years for the greens at Jimmy Clay. It is ongoing, and they're pretty gnarly. Despite this, most of them are rolling okay, and you should get the sense that the staff is trying. Combine that with the affordable rates, the condition of the rest of the course, and good layout, Jimmy Clay -- while years removed from the top of the pecking order of Austin munis -- is still enjoyable.
Terrible Greens
The greens on the front 9 were terrible. They improved on the back 9, but were still very disappointing. Otherwise, the course was in decent shape. Pace of play was good for a Sunday afternoon with beautiful weather. I would have to check with pro shop about the greens before booking here again. Should have paid the extra $8 and played Roy Kizer instead.
