Jimmy Clay Golf Course
About
Jimmy Clay Golf Course opened in 1974 with a 6,931 yard Joe Finger design that incorporates Williamson Creek. This track is flat as well, and is noted for its generous fairways and large, elevated greens. The first and last holes are perhaps the most memorable. No. 1 serves up a blind approach shot over a hill into a skinny green, and the 400-yard doglegged 18th plays into the wind with water on the left side.

A beautiful design. Photo submitted by idream0fg0lf on 11/26/2012
Hard to putt when the greens are missing so much grass!
Interesting course layout, but horrible conditions. Greens and fairways are over grown with weeds and have large bare patches with no grass. This course needs help, I will not be returning.
municipal course
The players I was paired up with said the course had been renovated a few years ago, but the greens were in bad shape with fungal disease. Fairways were not irrigated, so they were dry and lacking of turf. Being an RV'er, I have played many courses around the country, and this one would be in my bottom 40%. Price was $27, including cart, which was probably fair considering the location. Many trees to plan around, and a few water hazards.
Lots of trees
Overall the course is a lot of fun. You can get into some tree and water trouble if not careful. Some of the greens were a chewed up and need re- seeding. Fairways in pretty good shape. Tee boxes need a TLC. I will play the course again. It was fun.
nice muni
Nice average course and worth the $25 I paid for greens fees. Has some pretty cool holes, the most memorable being the green surrounded by water. Makes for a nervy second shot. My only constructive criticism is that it is virtually impossible to hear those loudspeakers when teeing off! Cheers!
Greens need work. So does the staff.
I've been here enough times to come to the conclusion that the staff here has a bad attitude. After several instances, the pattern is clear. Perhaps it's because they are so busy, but that's no excuse. Example: They have 2 sets of carts, green for Jimmy Clay and white for Roy Kizer. But they didn't tell me when they gave me the cart which one to use, they are arranged in the opposite manner that the pro shop checkin is arranged (left vs. right), and there is no signage telling you which is which. Had I remembered which direction Clay is versus Kizer, I might've realized which color to take, but obviously I didn't put too much thought into it. My mistake - we were eventually told (several holes into the round) by a marshall that we took the wrong carts - in the customary standoffish manner that practically everyone working here seems to possess.
As far as the course goes, it certainly packs a few challenges - some tight fairways, some open. Lots of strategically-placed sand and plenty of water. Most of the fairways are in decent shape. Can't say that for the greens. Some were in good shape but others are really bad - lots of weeds, bare spots, etc.
Fix the greens and attitudes and I'll be a regular.
Oh yeah, you might want to offer coolers or at least insulated ice bags. I've never seen a golf course give you ice/beer in bags like these - basically what you get at a shoe store - no insulation whatsoever.
Fun Course
I have found this to be my most challenging course to date.
Jimmy Clay Value
Just played the course... Keeping in mind that it is still winter, the course is a great value and lot's of fun!
Slow
Came at 230 I probably had to wait to tee off on about the first 11 holes due to players backed up didn't get in 18 holes but the course wasn't to bad the greens had some rough spots that caused them not to be able to mow the greens correct
Needs work on greens
Needs greens to be in better shape. 3 holes had temporary greens and several others had issues with them. Fairways, on the other hand, were in good shape.
staff was a little disorgainized did not get us started on a timely manner.
good for the price and the pace was normal . need to improve on staff attention to jimmy clay.
Jimmy Clay is a good value now and even with winter conditions on the greens it's still a good place to play 18.
Jimmy Clay is a course that I enjoy playing due to the course layout. It has some challenging holes and some of average difficulty that tend to balance each other. Currently winter conditions prevail and while the fairways are in good condition the greens have winter grass and are slow due to the length of the grass.Recent rains have made the greens soft and receptive but you will have to whack a putt to get to the hole .With those conditions considered it's still fun and a good value.
After 6 feet of water on the course in the Austin flood the course was playable.
There are pictures of just the top of the flag stick on #6 green out of the water. They are working hard to bring the course back but it will take some time.
Greens are TERRIBLE right now
My guess is they sanded the snot out of the greens after the storm a couple weeks ago, but wow, they're in terrible shape. The greens literally look like beaches (as do a couple of the tee boxes). A few of the fairways prohibited cart use due to significant water build-up. It's evident that there was damage from the storm, but I was surprised by the poor conditions two weeks later.
When this course is in better shape, I give it a solid 4 stars due to value.
very well maintained
Beautiful course layout and maintained. Fairways are excellant and traps and rough very playable.
Good for a weekend golfer.
The clubhouse staff was super, and rate of play was great. We actually finished in under 4 hours and had a rewarding afternoon.
fairways in great condition
The fairways were great and the greens overall were good. There were patches on the green where there was no grass and bumpy in places.
Good course for the price.
This course is a bit more challenging than Roy Kizer. More shade for mid day play. It is in average condition.
Stacked tee times too close. Slow Play. Poor Course Management
My son and I arrived for our tee time only to find that the course stacked tee times for a frat party outing. Slow play, very poor tee time management. After being a regular customer for years I will not be back. Not the first time this course puts too many groups off and does not monitor group playing time even though there are marshals driving around in carts (just so they get to play fee).
LOVE THE CLAY.
I HAVE LOVED TO PLAY AT THE CLAY FOR YEARS. VERY REASONABLE RATES FOR SUCH A FUN COURSE. GREATS ARE IN BETTER SHAPE THAN THEY HAVE BEEN IN A WHILE. CLAY HAS ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM ONA FEW GREENS, BUT ALTOGTHER GREAT VALUE AND EXPERIENCE.
