Jimmy Clay Golf Course
About
Jimmy Clay Golf Course opened in 1974 with a 6,931 yard Joe Finger design that incorporates Williamson Creek. This track is flat as well, and is noted for its generous fairways and large, elevated greens. The first and last holes are perhaps the most memorable. No. 1 serves up a blind approach shot over a hill into a skinny green, and the 400-yard doglegged 18th plays into the wind with water on the left side.

A beautiful design. Photo submitted by idream0fg0lf on 11/26/2012
Very nice pulic course. Challenging holes, many tree lined. Excellent for the price. Adjacent to Roy Kaiser which is also an excellent public golf co
Greens require either work or water. A number of dead spots.
Loved the course!
Great course for a reasonable price. My new favorite. I think this is a fun course for anyone at whatever skill level you're at and it's really nice that you can play here without breaking the bank. I highly recommend the course and look forward to trying out the Roy Kizer course next door.
Super shade trees cover from the sun
Course Marshall super helpful & beverage cart girls make their rounds, best shade trees from the 100 degree sun best value for the money. Super practice greens.
Great layout, terrible greens
Have always liked the layout and at one time the greens were better than Kizer's. However, I haven't played this course for almost two years because the greens were so bad the last time I played it. I heard they had opened the three greens that had temporaries so thought I would try it again. Greens are terrible, more sand than grass. There was only one green that didn't have a rooster tail of sand when you putted.
Love the layout.
I have played here many times in the past and love the layout of the course. The fairways were in really good condition but the greens could use a little more attention.
The course has a few very difficult holes because of narrow fairways.
Jimmy Clay golf course in south Austin, TX is a very good course, but you need to have a lot of expertise to enjoy the round. There are a number of fairways that are quite narrow, and are lined with lots of trees on both sides. There are a number of holes that have out-of-bounds either to the right or left of the fairway, and it is quite easy to go out-of-bounds on these holes if you either slice or hook a moderate amount.
If you like lots of challenges, this is the course to play. It has been used for years as one of the courses for the Texas schoolboy playoffs.
Good value for money
The day I played, the greens had been sanded. The greens were very slow because of the sanding and were a little bumpy. But this is a overall good sign because it will help the greens run true in the long-run.
The course has some challenging holes and a couple of blind tee shots. Overall it is a very good value and the staff is super-friendly. it was a very busy weekend day and the pace was OK.
Not a lot of traffic, although hot, I still enjoyed the round.
Sure it was hot, however being by myself, I played the front nine with someone from Oklahoma City, whose wife was attending a conference, and the back nine with a guy who recently moved here from Philadelphia, really enjoyed the folks I met, enjoyed the round, in addition I beat the Austin traffic back to my house.
Course is ok, greens are terrible
So it had been a while since I had played Jimmy Clay because I had heard bad things about the greens until this past week when I heard they are now better. In general, this is a cool track and could be a great course but the greens are still holding it back. They seem to be in better shape than earlier this summer but still were super sandy and had recently been punched. As a result, putts are bumpy and un-true as well as extremely slow. I would play again at twilight after work but would never pay more than $20 to play this course until the green issues are resolved.
BA
Greens have been patchy for over a year now
They closed down three greens and they are the best on the course, the greens have patches of dead grass that have been there for over a year.
Still interesting course
Pace of play was main problem; course should not take more than 4 hours, but it was a Saturday morning. Course in very good shape - better than last time, probably b/c of recent rains. Three temporary greens but I knew that in advance.
Jimmy Clay...we miss you
Sadly even after rebuilding all the greens...the staff has never found an answer to a grass killing fungus that plagues at least 75% of the greens. There are presently 3 temporary greens which I believe (when they comeback online) will be continually replaced with more temporary greens as the rest become unputtable.
Nice patch of land but needs attention..
Not impressed. Played Riverside last week and the greens are in much better shape. They (JC) are giving a discount right now (we played for 30 on a Sunday morning) but the greens are in really bad shape and 3 of them are under construction. The one's that aren't under construction should be as they are patchy and in a lot of not so small spots, the black clay is surfacing which makes it impossible to putt without your ball hopping through those surface areas, which are currently prevalent on most holes. Also pay close attention to the signs on the front nine as the course is not easy to follow hole to hole.
Was hoping for a lot more especially since others had told me it was a nice course and much nicer than Riverside. I agree its a better patch of land that both Jimmy Clay and Roy Kizer are situated on but Riverside's greens are in far better shape than JC's. The hole construction also makes for an artificial score since they have extra large holes and all cut their perspective holes down in length anywhere from 50-100 yards.
If you have to go there for a good round of practice for 30-35 bucks I'd say its worth it but don't go there if you are going to have a scramble or intend to play a competitive round with friends or colleagues. It's not there yet. Try Riverside or Kizer if you want to stay under 50 bucks. maybe Blue Bonnet next.
Needs attention
I thought the greens were repaired after my last visit where there was machinery and noise everywhere, but to charge you $35 for the type of greens they had was indismissable. I'd rather pay $8 and go to Butlers Pitch n Putt, at least their greens are semi playable. This course still needs much attention. The fairways and T-box's are fine but 50% of the greens were still in really bad shape. I think until the course is pristine, they should charge $19 a person.
We love this course
This is a great public municipal course. It has beautiful fairways, and just the right degree of challenge for that intermediate type. The greens are in pretty bad shape, but they are working on them. 3 holes have temp greens currently and I'm oping when those come back online, they will fix a few others. It's really my only complaint.
Great peaceful course - classic
It's always a good day for Jimmy Clay. Classic course layout that has beautiful trees and challenging holes.
Love the course, some challenging holes.
Enjoy this course every time I play. They need to fix their greens and this would be one of the best courses in the city.
Bad Greens
Overall the course is in decent shape, but the greens could use some serious work. But I can't complain too much for a $30 rate at 8:30 on a Saturday morning. You get what you pay for.
Good value, temporary greens have to be fixed.
$30 to ride 18 on a Saturday is a good deal wherever you can get it, and Jimmy Clay is in moderately good conditions. There is a lot of sand on most of the greens, including large patches on some. The worst part of the course are the 3 temporary greens that are currently on the course. They are atrocious.
fairways are in good shape...greens....not so much.
Some of the greens are really bad. It is good to see they are being replaced. Temp greens on those hole were....well, temp greens. Folks were very nice and carts are immaculate and in great order. Rain has done wonders for the fairways.
