Jimmy Clay Golf Course
About
Jimmy Clay Golf Course opened in 1974 with a 6,931 yard Joe Finger design that incorporates Williamson Creek. This track is flat as well, and is noted for its generous fairways and large, elevated greens. The first and last holes are perhaps the most memorable. No. 1 serves up a blind approach shot over a hill into a skinny green, and the 400-yard doglegged 18th plays into the wind with water on the left side.

Good condition!
This course was in very good condition! A few of the greens were poor but over all it was very good
Another muny to play every now and then
I like to get back to JC every now and then. It has a few holes that are fun to try and work the ball on here and there. But if it's a 'dry' time, then the fairways can get a bit harder than average. Except for an exception or two, I've found that they do okay in keeping the fairways and greens in shape. Either way, there's a good amount of #wide# open fairways to help you scramble as needed.
Worst greens I have ever seen!
They have had a terrible time with the JC greens. I hadnt played out there in over a year and thought they might have fixed it. The adjacent 9 hole course and Kizer have nice greens. Only thing I could think is maybe they are watering the greens with gasoline? maybe they should pave them??????
Like the new layout
I have not played this course in awhile. I definitely like the changes they made to the original course layout. The island green is a great feature. The one negative is the greens are currently in poor shape. Hopefully, they will improve with the coming spring.
Great Value for the Money.
I've played Jimmy Clay several times this past year and have always enjoyed the course. The pace of play has ranged from 3 3/4 to 4 1/2 hours. The greens are now in better shape than they were earlier in the year. I would rate this course an average value for the money if paying full price. I have played for $14 to 22.50 through Golfnow.
The course is nice with challenging holes, but the greens were not in good shape.
Unfortunately, golfnow provides the course conditions after you pay the fee. Also, the 4-some behind my 3-some decided to hit into us on 3 holes. The course management allowed a 6-some in front of us and we were being held up, thus the 4-some may have gotten inpatient, but it was not our fault. Poor course "mgmt".
Great deal at Jimmy Clay!
Beautiful day on Jimmy Clay in SE Austin yesterday. There are a few greens they have lost but the fairways are in great condition for the winter. Great value w/ cart and good pace of play, overall an enjoyable round!
Better in the summer.
I've played at Clay/Kizer numerous times. It's been a while since playing on Clay, but overall I thought the course was pretty bad. One of the great things about Texas golf is that it's available year round. Northerner a flock to the state every year and most courses prep for the onslaught after summer. Clay didn't it appears. The greens were terrible! Mown so short that had any watering occurred overnight you'd be putting in mud patches in the morning. The practice greens were in better condition. Tees and fairways were good, but the green conditions really ruined the round for me. I think I'll stick to my other regular course on the northeast side of town that is really good about their greens. At this time of year, I can't recommend a course that can't keep their greens in better shape I cooler weather than they do during a Texas summer drought. Try them in spring/summer months.
Great course, needs a little help
The layout is fun, challenging at times, wide open others. The greens are suffering right now, usually is pristine condition but I think they have a fungus that is causing problems that can and I am sure will be fixed. Really like playing this course and will continue to do so regardless of the greens because you can still putt with enough reliability. The rest of the course is very good.
Challenging enough with a great finishing hole. Not so happy with the changes on #4 & #5. Greens were in pretty bad shape.
The course greens need attention. Fun to play for all levels, staff friendly and plenty of parking.
First Time
It was awkward at first since I wasn't familiar with this course, however, I truly did enjoy the course. I couldn't finish the game since my 60 degree club went missing or lost.
Good round of golf for the money.
I havent played Jimmy Clay in 3 years and only once back then. I forgot how nice the set up is for a muni course. It's easy for the low handicapper because of the wide fairways but that's not me and I found it to be challenging, especially with the length of some of the holes. A friend played with me and had never been to JC before and he loved it. Some sparse areas on several greens and fairways but its been a dry fall. It's worth the money, especially if its booked on golfnow.
Good for the money.
The course is fair. I would like to see the pace of play improve. Grounds are a little wet in places. Overall for the amount of play it receives its a good course.
Good, scenic and traditional parkland layout that is affordable on the weekends. But conditions are usually average.
I play Clay often because I like the layout and the price is usually the best in town. You can walk or ride and I especially like the back nine. Conditions-wise, it's always a little more spotty than next door Roy Kizer, so if that's important to you, it might be best to pay a couple extra bucks and go there.
Nice fairways, greens need some work.
Challenging and fun to play. Pace was very good. What more do you want me to say?
Needs work
Clay is in better shape than it was when I played it a few years ago but still needs work. As mentioned when I booked on Golfnow, the greens were in mediocre shape. Most of the greens had patches of dead grass from disease or other causes. The fairways and every other part of the course were in good shape otherwise. The layout is not too difficult and is a decent place for a beginner to learn how to play.
not in this condition
i think the course was not well maintained and a couple of the greens were temporary.
greens in great shape after the rains
after the rains the fairways are green and the greens are running true,
Great Value
This course is a great value. The prices are hard to beat. The greens were in bad shape though. In general, the course is not as lush as other courses in Austin, but I look past that because the price is so low and the course is forgiving for a player that goes right a lot like me. I will definitely play again here.
Good layout
I've grown up playing Jimmy Clay and have enjoyed the layout over the years. Still a fun track although we had a couple of temporary greens (looks like the regular greens will be back in commission soon). Overall: it's a pretty straightforward course with some interesting holes; has a lot more length than Lion's but less interesting than Morris Williams. The Jimmy Clay greens need help.
