Morris Williams Golf Course
About
The “Mo Willie,” Austin’s third municipal course, has some character: it served as the home of Harvey Penick’s legendary golf teams, two of which won NCAA Championships back when Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw graced the fairways. And it’s named after Morris Williams, Jr., one of the best golfers to ever come out of the city. Now Austin’s airport has moved south, and this difficult Leon Howard design is a bit more peaceful.
Howard’s layout requires all types of shots, and is known for its small, slightly elevated greens. The best hole on the front is the dogleg left, 540-yard No. 2, even though some would argue that the 187-yard No. 3 is one of Austin’s all-time best. It drops 50 feet from tee to green over a pond. The back side is highlighted by water holes 11-14, with both 11 and 12 requiring approaches over the wet stuff.
Getting there : From the Austin Airport, turn left on Manor Road and the clubhouse is 100 yards down the street. The entrance is on the right.

Greens are overseeded and have bounced back
I'd avoided Mo Willy all year due to reports of sketchy greens. Finally made it back out and it was good to see them rolling pretty well. A little on the slow side, about two weeks after overseed, but rolled smooth and besides a few blemishes (hey, it's a busy muni), were solid. They might quicken up a bit in the next few weeks and firm up (approach shots were dropping on them like stones), which would be nice, but they've definitely turned the corner. I still think Clay has vaulted ahead of Mo Willy though in my preference of ATX munis.
My buddy who plays in the AGA dragged me back to the tips. It's been awhile. Definitely a different animal vs. the blues, especially the 9th tee where you're forced to hit a fade due to an overhanging tree.
Hard working maintenance.
The Mo Willie staff is working hard to keep the course a good place to play. Fairways and greens were looking good.
Morris Williams
the only complaint I have was that the greens were extremely furry, and there was no notice or warning. it was almost unplayable and honestly would have liked a cheaper green fee for that quality of green, other than that though Mo Williams is a great track.
Fun and forgiving
Very well maintained. Greens were being reseeded, so very challenging. Wish I still lived nearby!
Great Price
Everything was great except the green. They were being resedded which I was told before buying so I was OK with it.
Good Public Course
I've (we) played this course numerous times since we always get a great deal on GolfNow. The course has kept up with the fairways and greens are in excellent condition. In the past the play has been slow but, the last two times we played, its been great and completed our round in just under 4 hours. I'll continue to play here with the great deals.
Mo Willy looking good
I play Mo Willy probably once a month. This is the best I have seen it. I play munis and semi-privates, so I see them all.
The greens are rolling true. The post below about shaggy greens must have played on a Monday. Every green is not going to be perfect, but wow is the course looking good.
**Greens will be aerated on 10/11
Slow shaggy greens
Overall, I enjoyed the round, but the greens were shaggy & slow, even compared to Austin Muni standards. Otherwise a nice layout that played at a good pace, finishing in 3hr 50min. I was glad to play with someone who knew the course... Will return. Please cut the greens so the balls roll as they should!
Challenging course.
Course layout requires the use of all of your clubs and the greens are tricky outside of three feet. Firm putting stroke a must.
Morris Williams Golf Course
The course is in very good shape. About 3 greens have damage spots however the overall course conditions were very good.
Staff rude/// pace management is required
Marshall is rude , desk staff is rude.
Had 5 sum and it was freaking slow. I had to wait 3-5 minties before every shot and asked marshall if you can manage pace. He replied they paid money so there's nothing i can do.
He knows what marshall does pretty well. Get training again and learn what your role is.
Excellent Course
Played on Sunday and it was probably my 30th time playing. I enjoyed the course and for the most part it was in great condition. The only hiccup was the previous heavy rains and two fairways were still a little muddy. Other than that, it was excellent.
Course in good condition. Pace of play a little slow, typical for a city course, but can't beat the price.
Greens-Always a Great Course
Greens are better look like a different blade of grass. Greens were aerated so we didn't get the full measure of them. they are playing slower than before i noticed all the courses in austin went to this blade or class of grass (Bermuda). Oh yea the green before were like the greens at Grey Rock but they also had there greens turning dark. you can see it's a smaller blade of Bermuda. oh i am a senior and i played off the Black tees and still shot a 85 not bad for me i'll take it any day. I gave up golf several times and many years apart so to play like I am playing i like it.
MoWilli 170805
The course was in good shape overall, although the 3rd hole green was confusing.
Good golf course
Good layout a couple of challenging holes but overall great experience would recommend this golf course i will be playing again real soon!
