This course gas great views.
I was disapointed in this course to say the least. The driving range was in poor shape to start with. Some of the holes were poorly marked. There were no ball cleaning stations at any of the holes. But the weather was great, the views were nice and it was a day of golf which is always fun.
Course is in terrible condition.
First time at Lost Canyon . Heard good reviews so my son and I wanted try it. Drove a long way to get there, had a 9am tee time, driving range is dirt, practice putting green was okay at best. The course is in terrible condition. Tee boxes are not maintained, fairways are dead w/ spotty clumps of grass, greens are inconsistent. Save your money, we will not be back.
Beautiful landscape very tranquil
Bring extra balls, very tough course.
We played during cart path only rule due to wet conditions, would never do it again, way too much ground to be covered.
No cart person that day, be aware there is no turn around for food or drink, so bring your own or die of thirst and hunger. Little room for error very good course lay out. Fun if you like a challenge. For the price you can't beat it!
Great layout, poor maintenence
I thought the layout of the course was solid, though there is a massive amount of gullys that seem unnecessarily challenging. What I will say is that the course wouldn't be very hard if it was in better shape. When you drive the ball down the center of the fairway, you shouldn't have to worry about being in a mud pile, or be sitting on hard pan (yes I had both experiences on the same day).
Cchallenging course made even more difficult with rain and strong winds.
Despite the weather conditions, had a great time with my brother and with Golfnow.com discount, the round was even more enjoyable. Got out early and was able to play all 18 holes before the heavy rain started.
Very difficult to play - worse than average Pete Dye experience
The course is carved out of the hills in Simi Valley. To say the holes are up and down is an understatement.
In my opinion, there were too many short pins to approach on often elevated greens.
The greens were very difficult to putt, even getting the speed right was a challenge (too slow from some angles actually).
Some bunkers were more like concrete than sand.
No snack bar on the course between holes 1 and 18 - you don't pass the clubhouse during a round. No one warned me to get a snack before setting out!
Word must be out on how tough the course is, even from front tees - I suspect that's why there are so many discount tee times for the Shadow Course.
I hear the Sky Course is more forgiving so green fees are always full priced.
Very Disappointing
I played the golf course many years ago and had a wonderful experience. It is about 60 miles from home and I do not typically drive that far for a day of golf. I have told so many people about this course and what a great location and condition it is in. I booked the course for a special occasion with my two brother in laws and unfortunately showed up to find a course that is clearly not the same as it was years ago. There was not one hole that had a fairway with green on it. I was spitting dry grass and sand out of my mouth from hitting fairway shots all day. No grass to stop a ball from rolling. They should water the fairways once in a while. I wouldn't spend money to play this course again. Very very disappointing!
Conditons - Goat Ranch
The condition of this course has deteriorated to the point that the fairways don't even have any grass on them. I realize it is winter, but in CA this inexcusable. I hit more shorts off of dirt than grass.
And the greens aren't much better.
Its a shame - its a great course design-wise and the terrain and property is great. They have just completely let it go.
This has always been a fun course.
Not anymore, they've let the fairways go, the course is not maintained so it wasn't a very good experience.
i only paid $40, so i didn't get ripped off too bad.
Only played because of great price from Golf Now.
They've let the fairways go to very little grass and hard. Greens were just average after years of having the best in SoCal.
terrible place to play golf
This golf course is in such poor shap I wish I could have gotten m y money back. The bunkers have no sand and the fairways have no grass. I will never play that course again yuntil they put it in the same shape as the other course at the location.
very poor.
Greens are too slow, I had to chip all the way.
Forget about this course.
Brown Grass
Course needs water. The Grass is brown. My motto is "try anything once". This is true for this course. I will spend more money to play the Sky Course. (I normally play the Sky Course and it's in much better shape)
This course has been let go!
Whe I still had a good time, this course is not what it used to be. Sand is concrete, grass is just dirt. The rumor is that the owner is out of $$$$.
Like an astroturf skatepark
Unfortunately the excitement of playing such a vast and undulating course was short lived due to the lack of green grass... nearly everywhere. The tee boxes have grass, but from the tee box you don't want to aim for the fairway, that's where the grass is worst. Most the time a small dust cloud actually gets kicked up when your ball first lands and then the worst part- the ball rolls, and rolls, and rolls.... not down the fairway but OFF the fairway since each one is slopped. I lost probably 14-15 balls and have a probably 18 handicap. Even with four pairs of eyes watching one's tee shot land in the fairway, we'd still sometimes be unable to find the ball.
Beautiful course shame they don't take care of it.
Pete Dye would not be pleased. His beautiful creative canvas is in worse condition then a muni-course. I did get what I paid for, on golf now it's the cheapest course in Ventura County so I can't complain about the value. They say they have no money to keep it up and any money they do have goes to the other course which they $80 to play. Makes sense, it's just to bad.
Tough course but needs maintenance!!!
The shadow course is very challenging. It does need some serious course maintenance!!!! Fairway grass, where there is grass, is very dry.. Greens need a serious sanding to smooth them out, they are very challenging in terms of undulation, but need to be smooth to get a true putt!!!! There are a lot of bunkers, both in the fairways and that run along side the fairways. The bunkers are placed to where the average drive of 250yds could end up in the bunker. So course management is a must!!!! Go deal on GolfNow at $26, I wouldn't pay full price!!!!
really hard, dont bring your driver
I was able to hop on this afternoon for just 18 dollars and took the chance. was able to finish 18 in two and half hours which was great. I was hitting 3 iron off every tee basically as you can easily lose 15 ballls hitting your driver into the canyon. views are amazing, course is very hard, wind is a factor
Quick round and challenging.
Although it was a rainy day, I had a great time on the Shadow Course at Lost Canyons. My friend and I finished the 18 holes in three hours.
The course has a lot of elevation changes and most greens are protected by deep sand traps. Most holes are fairly short, but accuracy is required. We also took advantage of their Sunday brunch buffet. All in all, it was a great experience.
Really fun course
I had read a lot of negative reviews about this course, but gave it a shot anyway due to the great tee time I found. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. On the whole, I found the course to be a great challenge, and LOVE the design and view. I will agree with many other reviews that the fairways are not in great shape. They are still very playable, however, and the greens are pretty darn good, which is what really matters. On the whole, I thought it was a great course.
Play did slow down mid way through the round, so the pace ended up sucking... but that seems to be the norm in SoCal on the weekends.
