A challenging course within a beautiful landscape -- but requires attention to maintenance!
You have to play the course a few times to know how to play it! The round requires selective shots off the tee box, you'll be leaving the driver in the bag for best results or else have fun in the mountains looking for your ball!
The course does require some attention though -- there are a lot of ball markings on the greens which turn simple 4 footers into impossible makes. I played on a rainy day & the fairways were still rock hard & dried out with tons of divots!
Pete Dyes is the architect of the course & it should really be taken off because it has not been kept up to the standard that it should be as a Pete Dye design. I've played tons of his courses & this is by far the worst conditioned course I've played!
I only recommend this course if you can find a discounted rate or else it's simply not worth the money!
Great price for a Pete Dye course
Got a great price to play the Shadow course at Lost Canyons in Simi Valley, course was in good not great condition, the wind was howling at about 30mph which was very challenging but fun, i have to say that I do love Pete Dye courses, the greens were fast and true, thanks goldnow.
This Course is not for the Average Joe
I have played this course numerous times in the past and thought I would give it one more try. The two courses at Lost Canyons are beautiful. I attempted to play the Shadow Course on Monday but due to the hurricane force wins gusting through the canyons, had to stop after the 2nd hole. It was ridiculous. The course should not have even been open. I was looking forward to a good day of golf but Mother Nature wouldn't allow it. This course is tough enough without 30-40 mph gusts of wind pushing the ball around. These courses rank high in aesthetic beauty. But most of the holes also rank high on the ridiculous factor for the average golfer. I will stay away from courses like this in the future.
Lost in the Canyons
Overall: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
The Good: Great reservation time. The staff at the Pro Shop was great, in and out there in 1 minute. I played the Shadows Course (almost haf the price of The Sky Course). Not crowded at all. Great pace of play. Numerical GPS ( graphic would be better). The ambulance (drink cart) drove by 3 times during play, with the proper rehydration drinks, and a smile. The course has well maintained fairways andf bunkers.
The Bad: Tee boxes are not flat. I don't mind if they are sloped, but they are more bumpy. You have to stump a few of them to get hem a bit flat. Some of the greens had scattered areas on bare soil,~ 1 inch diamater, but otherwise the greens were good, with different levels and slopes, some large and some very small.
The Ugly: No ball cleaners. Lacks a few signs around the course to know where you are going. Some tee boxes are elevated and it's like climbing hills on a Tough Mudder course- no steps, and probably need hiking shoes. I wouldn't recommend it to the seniors. They are prone to fall and break something.
Overall, taking the few minor things, it was an enjoyable experience. And yes, I will come back many more times. I'm sure they will be lots of improvements by then.
This course needs some serious attention. The Sky course is well maintained but the Shadow needs work
THe bunkers are bare and so are the fairways. Don't really mind the tight lies in the fairway but some bunkers have no sand in them. I had to just use a standard pitch shot to get the ball out a couple of times.
The way I figured it, So. Cal is a desert. Sand is cheap, so throw some into the bunkers.
Otherwise, the internet deals are not too bad.
Nice views, tough course!
Course was in better condition than the last time I played it. A great getaway course with excellent views of the mountains. Though the layout is difficult with not much room for error it's still fun.
Course in need of TLC throughout the course.
Liked the course layout, but course conditions are poor. Fairways lack grass and greens very spotty.
greens are under repair presently but fun course to play
tight fairways makes for placement golf, scenic course and fun to play
Target golf.
This is a fun course with many small greens that require good approach shots. Fun and challenging at the same time.
great course.
we played shadow course but putting green side need fix it cause lot a bad spot.
Very strong mixed emotions.
The guy who checked us in could not have been better; very pleasant, made great offers (didn't get his name), but made us feel very important and comfortable. I don't recall dealing with a nicer person at any golf course and I've played a ton of nice ones.
The starter (Ralphie) flat out lied to us; we didn't realize it until after the round was over, but was very disappointed in him at such a nice course as Lost Canyons!
Not sure his motive, but turned a perfect 10 into a 7, which I think Lost Canyons is above that!
Great value
It was a deal for a Sunday morning but the course needs some attention. The Fairways were hard and needs water, no sand in the bunkers.
The course was in fair condition.
The tee boxes and greens were in great condition. The fairways and ruff were in very bad condition. They need lots more water.
The staff were very nice in the club house .
Great Course
Due to maintenance, driving range was closed, but couse condition and chipping green and putting greens are available. I played at shadow course and it was beautiful and scenery was great.
This course needs a lot of TLC
Challenging design. A lot of blind shots, elevation changes and wind.... But the course needs a lot of TLC. You should be rewarded for fairway hits, instead your are hitting off dead/dying grass or hard pan from the center of the fairways. Even the greens had a lot of dead spots. Not worth the money at all. If you're going to play lost canyons, play the sky course.
Nice layout
Course has a very nice layout. The fairways were burnt out though. Not a lot of grass to hit out of in fairways
Terrible condition for the price...
As if Pete Dye courses aren't challenging enough, you throw in the fact that the Shadow course has almost completely been neglected and it is near impossible to score even decently on this track. I have played Municipal courses that put this place to shame. And yes, the course manager did tell us to come back and play the Sky course because they have actually been caring for that one. I honestly wouldn't play this course again for $20.00. And I definitely will not drive back to Simi Valley to give the Sky course a try unless they refund me the $55.00 I payed to play Shadow. And did I mention the bunkers? If you like hitting off worn-out practice mats or concrete-like fairways, this is the place for you. And if you like putting on diseased and pitted greens, head on over to Lost Hills. The most excited I was throughout my round was when I was hitting out of the rough. At least there was grass.
Overall, terrible, terrible conditions! Not to mention it was a complete embarrassment as I took a friend out that is a member at LACC...I was mortified.
The cursor has very limited mobility
Beautiful, challenging course in a lovely, quiet setting - no housing developments crowding the fairways. Elevation changes and variations from hole to hole will test your course management skills and places a premium on club selection and accurate shot making. You'll either become adicted to playing it or hate it.
