About
The public 18-hole layout, formerly known as the Austin Country Club, was designed by renowned architects, J. Press and Perry Maxwell. It served as teaching grounds for Harvey Penick, as well as Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw.
Riverside Golf Course challenges and delights players of all skill levels with its mature trees and scenic water hazards. Its convenient location, five minutes from downtown Austin and 10 minutes from the airport, makes it a serene escape without having to leave the city.
Getting there : From Austin, take IH-35 south to Riverside Drive. Go east on Riverside Drive 2.2 miles to Grove Blvd. and turn left. The course entrance is to the left before the community college.

Needs Lots of Work
This could be an excellent golf course if they would shut it down for a year and pour about $10 million worth of work into it. Tees,greens and fairways need a lot of work. The back nine is much better than the front nine, but overall the course is not in good shape.

Very good course overall
Course was cart path only due to heavy rain two days ago. Really could have been 90 degrees on many holes, and just avoid wet areas. I know that sometimes does not work with some mindless drivers.
Greens nice overall, a few need work in some areas.
Pace of play was very good most of the round.

Probably should have closed the course
Austin received torrential rain on Sunday. This left lots of standing water all over the course, really soggy conditions in many places, esp. sand traps. But the course didn’t close so we had to go ahead with our scheduled round on Monday since we wouldn’t be getting our money back (Golfnow’s issue). Weren’t allowed to go off cart paths at all.

Tale of two nines
Two inches of rain the night before showed how poorly the front nine drained. Most of the front nine greens were decimated by the February freeze of 21. The back nine greens were in great shape though. Front nine was almost 500 yards shorter. Back nine was long but simply straight. This is an old classic course without mounds and only a few elevation changes. When dry, I feel it is a fun course for the price.

Great golf course for any handicap golfer. Fairways and greens in good conditions and the golf carts were very clean. Highly recommend this course.

A Good Deal
A nice course with character, usually in good condition. During this round a few of the greens had bad spots, but not many. It was an enjoyable round.

For a Friday early afternoon round, pace of play was great and conditions were very fair!

What A Wet Mess!
I had not played the Riverside golf course in over ten years, and at times during this morning’s round I remembered why. It’s a somewhat quirky layout, with back-to-back par threes and par fives, with some short, very drivable par fours, but these characteristics were not a problem. What was an annoyance, though, was the amounts of standing water in most of the fairways and bunkers on the front nine. I realize that it’s been an extremely rainy spring and early summer here in Central Texas, but we’ve had no significant precipitation in the past couple of weeks, and the four other local courses I’ve played during that period had no such extreme storm water drainage issues. I lost at least five balls in the middle of the fairways because the sheer depths of the standing water made it impossible to see the ball to retrieve it.
The back nine is apparently better-drained than the front, and is a much better and more interesting course layout. However, there were still several bunkers that were either very damp, or, like the front, had deep standing water in them. But, if I could have played the back nine twice, and completely avoided the first nine holes, this would be a much more positive review of this historic course. Still, I felt like I got my money’s worth, having paid only $31.00, with cart, for a mid-morning tee time.
And, I’m certain to play this course again in the future, once we return to a somewhat more normal weather pattern, and when there won’t be small lakes in the fairways. Except then, we’ll probably head to the other extreme, and we’ll be complaining about dried- out, rock hard fairways and greens.
