La Cantera Golf Club opened in 1995, when it also hosted one of the oldest PGA Tour events, the Texas Open. It is no wonder the spot was chosen, with its numerous natural water features, mature oaks, and limestone rock outcroppings it provides the perfect terrain for a challenging round. There are also 75 white sand bunkers strategically placed throughout the golf course. In combination with the spectacular views provided by the course’s elevation changes, the course has quickly gained favor as one of the best public-access golf courses in the country.

La Cantera Resort

A lot more challenging than you would expect from a resort course. Fairways are tight and too far one direction or another and it's a lost ball, so bring spares. Greens are large but they do have a few tough pin placement. Lot's of elevation changes and even more views.

Great San Antonio Golf

Very friendly and helpful staff gave first class reception. Course was in excellent shape. Price from GolfNow was right so I treated myself to a great day of golf. Only issue was that all the par 3s were about the same length. Could've stood a little variation there. Will definitely go back again.

La Cantera Resort Review

First time playing at the Resort course. Arrived 30 minutes before tee time, was greeted properly at the bag drop, had a chance to check out the pro shop, decided to do my usual warm up out at the range while I leisurely enjoyed some good old country tunes they had on that morning, hit the first hole (under construction) and the day went just as planned. Fairways were very easy to stay on in my opinion, but if you catch yourself in the rough you could be in a bit of trouble due to the thickness of the grass. Greens played fast but not over the top. Majority of the holes were easy to get through. I loved the design of the course and you can't beat the views. Definitely would come back again, but hoping for cheaper prices on the drinks!

My new favorite course in San Antonio.

What a great Father's Day with my son. Since my sine is a small business owner, he rarely has the opportunity to get away for a round of golf but Father's Day is a ritual for us. Although I'm an avid golfer and have played most all the courses in San Antonio both public and private, this was my first time on the La Cantera Resort course. There was high chance of rain all day with some severe storms possible. We rolled the dice and headed out to the first tee. With all the rain we have had, the course was plush and beautiful. We had light drizzle throughout the day with a couple of heavy spurts but it actually made for a very comfortable day. Beautiful views from elevated tee boxes, very generous fairways for a past PGA Tour course but still enough challenges for lower handicap players while making it a great experience for higher handicappers. This is my new favorite course in San Antonio. Great course, great staff service= Great round of golf.

Still in tournament conditions

Once the Texas Open left LaCantera and headed for the TPC San Antonio I was worried the course conditions might decline a little bit.. That is not the case.. LaCantera is still in wonderful shape and definitely worth playing.. The pace of play was horrible.. Took more than 5 hours to finish.. I've never seen it that bad before so it might have just been a bad day.. The place was packed.. The biggest problem I had was it was hot outside and they let the water coolers run dry.. Yes they have a cart girl but 3.50 for water is not something I like to pay when I can get water from a water cooler.. We went by 4 coolers and all 4 of them were bone dry.. Bring your own water and you will be good to go.. The greens were great but I did notice the 17th green was rough around the edges..

Plays like PGA tour course

Great course, plays like PGA tour course and was home of Texas Open for a number of years. Hilltop tee and views of rolling hills and valley are fantastic. Clifftop tee is unique. Beautiful course with a challenge.

Very nice

Very nice course. Greens were extremely slow and hard to read. We got rained out after nine holes, so it made the cost expensive. Staff was very friendly, but could only offer a rain check which I could not use since I was leaving the next morning.

Walked

The course was under construction but...

I found the course to be quite challenging. You need to hit the ball straight. There were a couple of holes that were a bit iffy design wise but overall it was a nice course with some great views. The greens were very dry but rolled well. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. A couple of holes were under construction, but should be ready soon.

Overpriced

This is a $40 a round golf course at best. Greens were in ok condition. Tee boxes were ok. There was construction on hole 1 so we had to go mudding to get to the make shift tee box that was on a down slant. The food was slow, overpriced and subpar. The best thing about this course was the view from the tops of the hills. Lots of reasonably priced golf courses in the area, try one of them instead!

A former PGA Tour venue that's playable for everyone

Resort courses and PGA Tour venues generally don't go hand-in-hand. But the Resort Course at La Cantera is a rare play that's both easy swinging for vacationers as well as a true test for the game's elite. The Weiskopf-Morrish design hosted the Valero Texas Open from 1995-2009, and with holes like the stellar 12th, a narrow, long par 4 with a shallow, elevated green guarded on all sides, it's easy to see why. But stifling holes like the 12th are the exception and not the norm. Compared to the TPC San Antonio, mid-handicappers are going to have much more of a fighting chance around the greens, which are generally more receptive with a little more room to bailout safely from sucker pins. The drivable par-4 7th (a signature design trait of the team) is as fun of a hole as there is in Texas.

Rounded out with some lovely scenery and top-notch service by management company Troon Golf, La Cantera isn't going anywhere in the Hill Country golf scene.

Funhouse Greens

The course was beautiful. The greens were impeccable... but... I read breaks very well, however it drives me nuts when a downhill looks uphill and vice versa. the practice green warns you what is coming, but unless you have a yardage book that shows the direction of the greens, plan on a lot of 3 and 4 putts.

After the front 9 we decided to roll a ball on the green before putting and it made the back 9 a lot more enjoyable.

The greens were unplayable

The staff were helpful and friendly and made us feel welcomed. We like the layout of the golf course. The fairways were open and wide. The second shot required you full attention because you are either hitting up a hill or down a hill onto the greens. Great scenic vistas also. After a few holes we both came to realization the greens were unplayable. If you are putting against the grain the ball jumped then bounced and moved sideways. This conclusion about the greens was confirmed by a couple of single golfers that we allowed to play through. I asked them both if they were regulars at this club and both said yes. I asked what the secret to reading and putting the greens were? They both told us that this time of year you don't. Later we watched a two- some playing in front of us and we observed that once they were on the green they took two putts then moved on.
This was a really disappointing golfing experience because of the greens. I wanted to take my dad to a nice golf course since he was visiting from Alaska. We had plans to play the Palmer course later in the week, but no way.
However we both enjoy the scenic views and visiting with each other.

Very nice track

Great driving range.
The greens speeds varied widely from green to green, depending upon the grain. Make sure you account for that. Fairways amply wide.
