Canyon Springs Golf Club

About
Canyon Springs Golf Club is a true Hill Country course. You need to stay on the fairways or bring plenty of balls. Using an old farm to build on this choice piece of Texas real estate, this land has been artfully transformed into what many golfers will refer to as among the very best of what Texas has to offer. With five sets of tee boxes on each hole, demanding greens, natural Hill Country surroundings and magnificent limestone waterfalls on two holes, this 7,000-plus-yard course presents a significant challenge to event the most experienced golfers (and even those who think they are).

Good course in spite of hard greens
It just took a little rain to bring it back to top condition. However, a strong north wind makes it doubly difficult since it was designed for the prevailing Southeast wind here.
Only gripe is the greens replaced a couple of years ago are still rock hard and won't hold more than a 9-iron.
Greens are very fast with subtle breaks. It is very important to be in the right portion of the green to avoid 3-putts.
Excellent Course
I really enjoyed Canyon Springs. The greens were extremely fast, which was cool, but was challenging with all the undulations within them. I highly recommend this course. My only critique is that around the greens and in some areas off the greens, there was a lot of water that made spots unplayable or wouldn't allow you to run shots up to the greens which were firm and fast.
All I have to say is WOW!!!
If you are looking for a challenge in the San Antonio area and a course that is in outstanding conditions, then look no further. I have recently relocated to the area and am an avid golfer. All I can say, is that I will be back!
Here's my evaluation:
1. Clubhouse - fully stocked and staff very helpful and friendly
2. Warm up area - nice, but you have to hit off of mats vs. turf. There are plenty of stations though and warm up balls were in good condition too. There is a large putting green and it rolled pretty true to real course conditions. I did not see a chipping or bunker area though to practice those critically important shots.
3. Course - All I can say is WOW! - Out of all the courses I have played in the San Antonio area (The Quarry, Olmos Basin, Brackenridge, Golf Club of Texas, La Cantarra, etc) this course is one of the best. I would put it in the same category as the Quarry for conditions and difficulty. Green complexes were as challenging as Olmos Basin. The only negative I would say is that the bunkers were a little rough and there were some overwatered areas near some of the greens (aka - squishy) - but nothing to the point of unplayable.
4. I saw comments about the starter, but the gentleman, David, that started us was friendly and extremely helpful to let us know the conditions and limitations for the day.
5. Refreshments - Saw water cans on multiple holes. Cost for a hotdog and drink was reasonable for a golf course and quality was good too. Hot dog was fresh, bun was soft. I saw a drink cart twice, which was OK.
6. Discounts - They offer military discounts too, but I got my tee time on Golfnow as a hot tee time, so I saved more that way.
Negatives:
I saw no Marshalls to help pace of play, but those groups that I came up on, playing as a single after the first nine, let me play through and were very friendly. Ended up playing my round in 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Thanks for an awesome experience.
Nice round that might have been even better
Great staff and course was in great condition. No marshal though and the slow foursome in front of us could of let us play through but we’re oblivious or lacked any sense of golf etiquette.
Beautiful course, well marshalled
Haven’t played this beautiful course for 20 years. I’m my opinion it’s one of the best maintained tracks in the area. Not difficult, with generally wide fairways, but will challenge the average golfer. Some of the greens and pin placements can be devils. Despite being “full” we were never waiting on the tee, nor being hassled behind. Love this course!

Superb conditions & wonderful pace
Canyon Springs was in wonderful condition and the pace of play was excellent. The greens were perfect, tee boxes in great condition, and the fairway & bunkers immaculate. Don’t wait, weather was warm but couldn’t even be bothered with such an excellent round here.

Average layout and design
Hill country golf is fairly blah in my mind. Played several courses in and around San Antonio and felt they have all been the exact same. Pretty good condition wise but pretty boring layout wise. The best thing about this course to me is the clubhouse and wedding reception area and longhorn cows when you pull in. Cool look and design. Course winds through some apartment complexes and housing complexes along the way. Had a hard time judging speed and slope on the greens. Felt it was a decent course for the $65 twilight rate (a lot better value than the TPC canyons course who's layout is no better than this one). Probably wouldn't have interest in playing it again though. The waterfall on 18 was a nice touch though and I'm sure an awesome backdrop for weddings.

Hi Snaphook417, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We appreciate your compliments on our clubhouse and wedding reception area, as well as the scenic views. We understand your concerns about the layout and difficulty in judging speed on the greens. We'll take your comments into account for future improvements.
