Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.

The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.

No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.

Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Nice course

Played on a Thursday. It’s mid-July and hot in Austin, but course still in good condition. Played with three members. Great guys. Great staff.

Ok Course, Needs Some Care

I wish I could say I really enjoyed Avery Ranch, but it was just ok. I was grateful the starter let me join a group early because of a no-show. Luckily I was paired with members and they shared some course insight along the way. There were a handful of blind shots and dry creek beds which I would have never known were there. Some great shots could be penalized if you aren’t careful.

The course has some nice views and elevation changes which made fun tee shots but it was a weird layout. A couple of short par 4’s, then a long par 4, a few par 3’s over 200 yards off the Golds and back to back par 5’s on the back 9. Plenty of trees line the course and there’s cold water every few holes.

What drove my rating down was the conditions. The greens are fast, which I like, but we’re bumpy and spotty because nobody seems to repair their ball marks. The bunkers...don’t get me started. They are full of rocks; not just pebbles, 2-3”+ rocks. One of which was below my ball and chipped my brand new Titleist wedge. Needless to say, I was NOT happy. For what I paid for, rocks in bunkers are unacceptable. Some of the tee boxes are also in need of repair. The 18th is dismal to say the least. I might be back knowing what to expect. Look for the hot deal instead of paying full price.

Fun track.

Lots of different looks on the fairways. Very fair with receptive greens and sandy bunkers.

One of my favs.

Has stood the test of time!

One of the very top public courses anywhere in Austin. Only reason not 5 star was terrible tee box condition......fairways and greens for the most part in good shape.....why not the tee boxes?

Great course.

Great course in awesome shape, but it was crazy that with a course this nice there was not a single ball washer to be found. Still a greater course and would go back.

Staff on Course Acting Up

Overall this was a nice place. I arrived 1hour early for a 3:30 tee time. The staff in the pro shop were nice, but told me that range balls were not available at that time. I guess they had heavy use or were understaffed at the range. They offered me a free draft beer in place of warming up. A nice gesture, but not as satisfying as being prepared for a tough stretch of holes right out of the gate.

We started on time but the course was crowded. Our foursome waited on each and every shot. Not overly long, but just enough to notice. The frustration began Around the third hole when three of us were all in the fairway waiting for the green to clear and the group behind us became impatient and hit into us. Multiple shots landed within 15 yards of us. No big deal, we though maybe they figured we were out of range. Sadly that trend continued and became more and more egregious and more and more distracting. For the duration of the round there were balls rolling past us, flying into trees over our carts, and the worse. On all par threes they would fire away the moment we replaced the pin, before we had a chance to retreat for our clubs or climb into the carts. Needless to say it was obnoxious. We were waiting patiently on the group ahead of us, these jerks were determined to make their presence know. I tried yelling and waving my arms several times, but it didn’t stop. I waited to see a marshal or even the beverage cart to communicate the problem, but neither were spotted after the 7th hole. On 17 they even heckled me both in the tee box and from the tee box as I struggled to get the ball up and down. It was so frustrating I picked up after 6 strokes and walked off.

At the conclusion I tried to speak with the pro who at this time was locking up. I pointed to the guilty party who walked past us during our conversation and the pro informed me that the player in that group was in fact a manager at the course and should know better, however he failed to offer any other response.

It is a shame that a nice track in good condition with a convenient location and good value has a culture that allows employees to act like fools on the course disrupting the experience of the guests. Shameful behavior and no management oversight means I will not be returning.

Perfect Friday morning at Avery Ranch

This was my first time playing Avery Ranch, and I wish I would have found it sooner. It's a 20/25 minute drive from downtown Austin, but it's worth the trip. The driving range has a large number of spots, and it is right next to the first tee. The course is somewhat hilly, but there isn't much elevation change on individual holes. The course was in fantastic shape on a perfect 75 & sunny morning in April. A handful of bunkers on the back 9 are in rough shape, but it's not enough to dampen your round.

The starter advised us to make sure you stay to the left with your drive on #7 - Avery Ranch's signature hole, and take an extra club on the Par 3 17th. The 3-hole stretch from #5 to #7 is a doozy - resulting in the front 9 being more difficult than the back.

Never disappoints

We come down annually from Minnesota in the spring for a few days of golf. This place is a must every year, always greenest course around. The greens were in pretty good shape this year. Very receptive and soft, but were still speedy and true. Fairways were in good shape as well, not as firm as some other courses in the area. Only complaint I had was the 25 mph winds today!!! Still an awesome round as usual :)

Well maintained course - great value

This is an excellent deal for $40 - you can’t do better in Austin at that price. Loved the speed of the greens - rolled pure.

Beautiful club house with great views

Challenging golf course but very fair. Back nine easier than the front. Course condition was top notch. Pro shop personnel very friendly. The kitchen help was changing and the wait for our sandwiches was a little long. Second time playing Avery Ranch this year and will return in future years while in Austin
