Avery Ranch Golf Club
About
Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.
The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.
No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.
Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Avery
Course Conditions:
This is always the question with Avery, and one you'll never get a straight answer about from the pro shop if you call. Fairways are 99% of the time the best in Austin, but greens can really be hit or miss. The 2011 drought taxed them badly and I think this might be the year they finally recover. Right now, they're decent, but the base seems to be there for some really good conditions this summer. When they're (greens) on point, one of the best courses out there.
Layout:
You can test yourself, or have a fun round, just pick a set of tees. Tips require some really good long iron play and an accurate drive. You will need to be able to easily carry 265+ to play blacks, 240+ for golds. If you can't, don't. Wind is always a factor. Par 3's are, IMO, the best.
Staff:
Good, always good.
Walkability:
You can walk, big hike between 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 17 and 18.
Overpriced course with a reputation for trying to make money vs. investing in course conditions
I live in Northwest Austin and used to play @ Avery Ranch just about every weekend. I stopped playing there last year after they raised their rates and due to the consistent poor quality of their greens. I decided to go back today and see if anything had changed. Sadly, it has not. The course still is at least $25 overpriced on the weekends. The greens were spotty at best, and multiple tee boxes had more sand and gravel than grass. I ended up playing as a single after amid-up at the pro shop, and found myself behind two foursomes. When I finally got past the 2nd foursome on #12, I never saw another golfer the rest of the round. How does a single in a cart not catch up to anyone else for 6 holes?? The ranger did nothing to speed up the foursomes ahead of me; they clearly were members who the course didn't want to upset because they are spending money there. I'll go back to playing Falconhead; same price with much better greens and overall course conditions, and much more attentive staff who care about the pace of play.
One of the Best in Austin
If you want a to play a great course and willing to spend the money this is a good choice. Plays fair but challenging.
Good condition for late winter
Course was in great shape for early March. Play with my 14 Year old son (10 hdcp) here a few times a year and are never disappointed. Even with recent sand added to greens they rolled true. A number of walkers on the course but it did not hinder play.
overpriced
It was 1 of 3 local courses that we played on a recent golf trip. It was set up through a PGA pro. We paid the full rate ($90) which is a shame since golfnow seems to have much better rates for all sorts of tee times. The course lay out wasn't bad and the facility itself is nice. The greens were awful. By far the worst greens of the 3 courses we played. This course is fine if you're spending $45 but I would highly recommend going somewhere else if you're spending more money.
Winter golf trip
Came to Austin to play for a winter break. We have played here before. The course is very challenging & was in great shape for the winter, Greens were very fast & smooth. A little more money, but a very nice course. Would not recommend for the beginner golfer or a very short hitter..
Fun Experience
This course really makes you feel like a member. Everyone was polite and very helpful. It is a very scenic and nice course to play. I would recommend it to anyone.
Needs improvement to maintain value
Course conditions were OK. Staff were very friendly. The ball cleaners were removed and we were playing in wet conditions. It was very inconvenient. Food choices were limited.
NICE FOR THE PRICE
GOT A GOOD DEAL FOR THIS COURSE. IT'S A NICE WELL KEPT COURSE WITH FAST GREENS . ANYTIME YOU CAN PLAY THIS COURSE UNDER $30 IS A STEAL.
Nice and challenging.
Course is in great shape, greens were fast. Alot of deer and ducks to see. Enjoyed the course, will play again.
Excellent golf course
I played early morning, in a cold and rainy day, so I had the course to myself. Conditions of the course were immaculate, you have deers and roadrunners in the front nine, and beautiful views. The course is easy to play and read. It has some challenging holes and shots. I had an excellent round and would go back in a heart beat. I shot a 99, second double digit in my record, I just started playing (6 months). I highly recommend this course to any golf player.
great facility
This course its very fair but challenging. Excellent practice facility's. Greens roll like pool tables. Pace of play its good. Lots of tee options for various skill levels. You need a lot of different shots to score. Forced carries on tee shots. Must place the ball on proper side of fairway to get a good look at some greens. Fun to play. Will play again.
Challenging but Fair
Avery Ranch is a challenging course that offers a little bit of everything throughout the 18 holes. It has long par 3 holes, sand and water. Greens were in excellent condition as were the fairways, when I found them.
Always a Fun Round
I've played this course about 5 times since moving to town. The staff is amazing, very friendly from the moment you arrive and have been each time I've played here and the course has been in great shape each time also at differ times of the year. Greens have been moderately fast. Front nine Is more challenging, with multiple holes that require a shot to carry a drive or a shot to the green. Layout is great, stay in the fairways and you are fine, sounds easy, but we now most golfers are avg at best. Seems a little over priced to walk on but I have always found a great GolfNow price. I don't normally take time to write a review but the staff and course are definitely worth taking the time for me to do so. Great job Avery Ranch!
Impressive
The entourage is impressive. The staff very helpfull. The mergandize in the proshop expensive. The course in excellent condition. Nice fairways not too difficult to follow. Greens in great condition and fast. We missed some ballcleaners and wastebins (should be at least at every other hole). We enjoyed our first round at AveryRanch. There will be more to follow for sure.
Excellent Course
Very nice place to play. Course was in great shape.
Worth the green fee
The course is in good shape. The fairways are not too tight but they challenge you to hit a decent drive. The greens have some character, so you have to pay attention to putts of any length. It is difficult to assess the pace of play, we played behind a charity scramble. We finished in about 4:45. I think the pace there would normally exceed 4 hours.
Always a great place to play
This is a good track. Greens are well maintained, practice facilities are large with almost always hitting of grass, and the atmosphere is inviting. The course is challenging but doesn't penalize for a good shot. Bunkers are inconsistent with hit and miss; some hard and some soft would be my only critical comment.
Avery Ranch course was excellent!
My friend and I were extremely impressed with the course conditions and the play itself, not to mention the scenery. Excellent course and would recommended it to anyone.
SLOW PLAY
The big problem with this course is not the condition or the price it's the members!!!!! They won't let a twosome play thru a foursome. The course was wide open in front of them while they play ARMY golf. If your not in a hurry this course is for YOU!!!!!!!!
Totally agree. Never seen so many ball marks on greens. Members have no concern for etiquette.
