Cheval Golf and Athletic Club
About
Designed by Steve Smyers, Cheval Golf and Athletic Club's (previously known as Cheval Country Club) mature and meticulously maintained course meanders through 860 acres of elegantly designed development property. Cypress trees abound on this course along with native Florida wildlife including deer, alligators, otters, eagles, wading birds and more. Cheval is one of the area's most prestigious semi-private clubs and offers 18 holes of championship golf. Precise shot placement is required to avoid the 108 bunkers and water hazards that lurk on every hole. A large practice facility includes target greens, distance markings, a practice greens-side bunker, a practice fairway bunker, large putting green and separate pitching green.

Disappointed
I was looking forward to playing Cheval. I was visiting a friend in Lutz and he lives across the street. We use to play at Cheval years ago and we loved it. Well this time I invited two friends to go with us and nobody was impressed.
1. No driving range and if I knew this we would of picked somewhere different become I love hitting a bucket balls before I play
2. Chipping green was grown over
3. The shark experience was cool until we try to use the message option to communicate to the beverage cart but nobody responded and they lost money because we were ready to drink a lot.
3. They had no regular fries for the meals we ordered.
I don’t know if I will play again based on the amount you pay and what you get. Well at least it’s bette than working.
Just ok...
I had heard this place was special. Not so much. Greens were good. But not so special. Just middle of the grade. Houses everywhere. Ok for a hot deal. But not full price.... played back tees. A little short and gimmicky. But ok.
Great value Great course
Was able to get Hot Deals and was looking to play something different. The course was in great condition, greens were little beat up but I know it’s coming to season to aeriate. Will definitely come back and play again
Course condition
Had a great day playing golf. For this time of year, condition was good. Nice layout and a nice true test. Loved the course and will try and come back. Worth playing !
Cheval experiance
The Cheval experience the minute we pulled into the walking lot was as good as it gets! Clubhouse greeting cart check in was top notch. Fairways and greens were equal to any course I played in Florida all the way to Naples! Sand bunkers good. The entire course layout was challenging yet wide enough in most places so any off center hit shots still had plenty of chance to still end up on the course. Get signed up and try the Cheval experience, you'll be glad you did. For me and my golfing buddies, we will be!!!!!
Thank you for your comments about the course and overall experience. Glad the staff met your expectations and we will let them know your thoughts.
Look forward to having you back!

Course was in good shape for this time of year.
The course was in good shape for this time of year. Grounds crew seem to be a good job on routine maintenance and up keep. Layout of the course is great. Overall, a great day had by all. Would recommend the course to anyone!
Thanks for your comments. The team is focused on getting the course in the conditions our players expect. Look forward to having you back out again soon.

One of the best.
Just a wonderful golf course to play. Every hole is a pleasure to play. Plenty.of water and sand. Everyone who works there were very congenial. A treat to play. A step above all the rest.
Thanks for your feedback. A Steve Smyers course is all that and more. Course is a true test of your game. Thanks too for your comments about the staff I will pass that along.

Course was very challenging
The course was in good shape for February. The fairways were sometimes spotty for grass but the greens were in good condition for this time of year. It was a good course to play and would recommend it too anyone.
Thanks for taking the time to write about your experience. I will pass your note on to the maintenance staff. I appreciate your recommendation.
Hope to see you back again soon!

Nice course. Beutiful neighborhoods.
First time playing Cheval. It was available on GolfNow, first time I had seen it available there. Always had heard good things about the course, and was not disappointed. Staff in the shop were super friendly. Course is a fun layout. Only issue was some of the greens had some dry spots. But otherwise very nice. Scenic course. I would absolutely recommend playing here for a fun round.
Thanks for your comments. Yes we recently joined up and partnered with Golf Now and glad you found us. Glad you found it challenging and that the staff also met your expectations. Hope to see you again soon!

3 Bad Greens
Staff is excellent and make up the difference for 3 bad greens.
Thank you for leaving your comments. Yeah, those 3 greens are a product of Hurricane Irma. As you saw 15 greens overcame the tree fallings, rain, etc but those greens got a bit temperamental with us as we hit winter. They are responding to the nice warm weather now. Again, thanks for the feedback.
Glad the staff met your expectations and hope you come back out and see us soon.

Nice Conditions, but very tough
If you like water holes, this is your course. Water comes into play on almost every hole. It is not an easy play.
Tees and fairways were in fantastic shape. Of the 18 greens, 3-4 were in fairly rough shape. The other greens were premo.
I would say to make sure you play the correct tees for your abilities. Play the wrong tees and you will pay the price. This is not a beginner course.
Golf Trip to Tampa
My group of 12-16 golf buddies have been doing a trip annually for over 20 years. Most of the time was in Myrtle Beach but we grew tired of it and decided on Tampa. The city and amenities were great. Cheval was one of four courses we played but the least enjoyable. The greens were dry and bumpy and we decided we will replace Cheval with another course. It was the worst of the four by far.
Good Track!!
Tampa Area courses are all dry right now, but I thought fairways and greens were in good shape considering drought. We played southern hills plantation in Brooksville, and they are even experiencing drought conditions. I would def play this course again.
Vastly Improved!
New ownership has definitely turned this course around. The greens are excellent! Fairways, rough and bunkers are all decent. New GPS carts help speed up play.
But the course is a challenge! Insanely narrow landing areas at times, especially on the par 5s.
Hopefully they continue to invest and improve drainage, as its been known to retain water in the summer months. But worth playing now!
Will Play Again
I don't get out to play often enough, when I do I'll come back here. Course is in great shape and is scenic and feels secluded. Lots of pretty ponds and birds and deer. (Much of the reason I play golf is to spend quality time with my husband and get outdoors, so I appreciate courses that feel like I'm really "out in nature".) Service was good, all the staff was friendly and helpful. Oh and the GPS on the carts was really cool, super accurate (we tested against an expensive range finder). Practice areas were nice. And most importantly, the bloody marys were just right.
Wet, wet, wet ...
This course is unplayable when wet. Balls land in the fairway, plug and disappear. I lost four that way today. Chipping and pitching off wet, muddy grass is an adventure. The greens were in good shape but it's getting to the green that's the problem. Carts have GPS but if you can't drive to your ball on the fairway, what's the point? Also, the course winds through a residential community and some holes are as much as 1/4 mile apart. You'll be spending way too much time just riding around from hole to hole. There's water just about everywhere. You're bound to hear noise from mowing, construction and so on. Not sure it's worth the bother even when dry. Better play TPC Tampa Bay or Fox Hollow.
If you're not a member, don't bother!
A course that's filed for bankruptcy better learn to treat non-members with a little more respect.
There is no map on the scorecard, no GPS in the cart, so those who have never played the course, like myself, had no way of knowing where any hazard started or stopped other than what you can see from where you are.
It's a very challenging course that could have been a good experience but instead left a very foul taste in my mouth.
Members do not need tee times, can go as singles or pairs, and you the guest must let them all through.
Then when you make it back to the clubhouse after completing 9 holes in just over 2 hours, you are publicly berated for your pace, ettiquette, ability, and integrity.
It's a competitive market out there, spend your golf dollars somewhere where they are happy to have you enjoy their course.
A great layout with water in play on 16 holes. Two tough finishing holes.
Overall, this is a great layout with lots of water, marshes, trees, etc.. In the winter months, have seen lots of deer.
Tee shots on the par 4's are generally to large fairways whereas the par 5's have tighter landing areas. To me, the key on the par 5's is the second shot which needs to be accurate to set up my 3rd shot (I don't hit a long ball). Good variety of layouts on the par 3's.
The last two holes are difficult. Two of the more difficult finishing holes in the Tampa Bay area.
Greens were in very good condition but were slow. First time I encountered slow greens at Cheval. Good practice facility and excellent food.
Thank you for leaving your comments about the course. Glad you had a great experience. We are working hard to get even better. Look forward to having you come back.
