Very pleased with my experience at General Old
I am very pleased with my experience golfing at General Old course. The amazing saving generated by Golf Now made a huge difference in my decision to book a tee time.
I am an advanced beginner and have only experienced two other courses in the Riverside area, Cresta Verde and Hidden Valley. General Old was much more beginner friendly than the other two courses.
Nice greens, but fix the fairways...
I have noticed this place going downhill since I started playing here last year. I come out around once a week because it is cheap and you can usually get 18 in after work if you skip around.
The greens have always been well maintained, but the fairways seem to be getting worse. The grass is more like a mixture of weeds on many holes. Many of the holes have given the rough away to dirt, but it is still playable.
I will still play here because it is a decent value and the closest course to work, but could use some TLC.
cheap old course
course is old style. patchy fairways. greens were very nice. good value for 28$ during the week.
Foggy day at The Olds
Teed off early with fog, but it didn't affect play. Fairways were in good sharp, greens were excellent. Tough to read but that's part of the challenge. Good rates and course was not crowded at all. Will play there again!
great Old Military style course,
Very very good greens but the fairways were in really bad shape.
It's a busy course, and good value for the price, but most golfers would pay a little more for better fairways.
Kudos to the greenskeeper for the greens however which were great........
Good course for the price.
The greens were in good condition, although we felt a little soft, (possibly due to weather). Some of the holes were long which really challenged ball striking and distance with driver and fairway wood, as well as accurracy. The dog-legs were a good challenge. The fairways were okay. If one likes a flat course and no water hazards, this is a good course and reasonably priced.
Oldie but Goodie
This course is true to its name, Old. In all fairness, the course isn't bad but it could surely use some more water. It's wide open which makes it easy when you hit that errant tee shot, to find your ball. The pro shop attendant on the other hand was not interested in the customer from my impression. Seemed irritated when I asked what must have been obvious questions to him. Never played the course before but enjoyed my time there. Riverside county has lost a few courses due to the lack of available water. I hope this one doesn't meet the same fate!
great coarse to play
Have played this coarse twice and plan to play more
Very disappointed in the condition of this course
Have heard they hold league semis and finals here; too bad. The fairways had multiple types of grasses in it so that you could have horrible lies, behind a clump of grass. The greens were well watered, but were very bumpy. The sand traps were just a couple of inches deep. The holes didn't have a lot of creativity. The wind makes it challenging, but many of the holes are very basic. It is very inexpensive, but you get what you pay for.
Good course, not incredible... would play again
I had never played this course before and was neither over or under welmed by it. It is in decent condition but not amazing. Good course that I would play again but only if I got a good deal on it.
Nothing too crazy here...
The course was in decent shape. The tee boxes were good, fairways were in good shape, and greens were consistant. However, if you hit anywhere off the fairway (OB, or outside the first cut of the rough) you are hitting off of hard packed dirt or rock/gravel. The course is not to difficult to stay in-bounds, but it can play long.
Nice greens, the rest of the course needs grass. Staff needs help with tee sheet.....groups of 5 (walking), 6, 4, 2, 2, 4 all waiting on each shot...
Tee boxes had not been cut in a week, grass in fairways was very, very, very spotty. Greens were nice and the layout is fun, a lot of potential if they would put another 20 minutes of water into it each day. Pace of play was very good considering the cluster of bad groupings. We arived an hour before our tee time and they had us wait because they had a "few more groups ahead of us". I sat and watched an empty tee box for 30 minutes before asking if we were good to go and told that we could "fire away". We played the first 5 holes in about 45 minutes (we were just 2 and had a good streak of finding each shot) then we caught up to a 4 some that never waited after putting out or waived us up on a par three to let us play through. Annoying, but they were obviously locals that knew the course and played fast We finished the front nine in about 1:30 even waiting on each shot for the last 4 holes. Very quick pace. Then the back nine came and at about hole 11 we saw a group of high school golf team members waliking in a 5-some two holes ahead. I am all for kids playing, but 5 walking on a public course at 11 seems stupid. Then we saw the group of 6......yes, 3 carts with two players in each cart, behind them and two group ahead of us.....back nine took 2:45 minutes and there was not a hint of any staff monitoring the pace of play or the groups playing together on the course. The 6 did not even bother pretending to break into two group coming up 18 and all 6 of them putted out right next to the club houses and then walked in and sat together at the bar, no one on staff said a word to them. A real shame, a fun little course that is playable and could be so good with a tiny bit of management. A little more water and someone that cares about pace of play and course etiquette could really turn this into a gem.
poor fairways
a lot of bare ground and dirt everwhere. greens werent toobad.pace of play was good and staff was nice
Beautiful setting and view!
First time we played there. Nice course, flat or gently rolling terrain. Enjoyed watching the large military transports taking off and landing at the adjoining March Air Reserve Base.
Good value.
Course well maintained. For the money a good deal.
Be prepared to wait.
I know its winter but the front was pure "hard pan"; the back was a little greener. Play was atrociously slow--no marshall--and we waited after nearly every shot. It appears everybody stops for lunch at the turn and we all wait in line. Frustrating.
Greens are in good shape and a real challenge with a few really tough pin placements.
Well supplied Pro Shop and BAR. Good Food.
Course is well maintained. It could be much better if some of our fellow golfers would take the time to fix their divots on the greens! What happen to fix yours and at least one more when on the green. Enough venting.
General Old is one of my favorite courses and is really shiny since the remodel. The entire building is first class and the staff including the kitchen staff are always friendly.
Keep up the good work.
Season made grass brownish
Everything was good except for the young kid at the check-in counter. He has no people skill at all. We paid at the front desk and he did not even gave us keys for the cart. When we asked him for the keys of the cart, he asked us back "do you need carts?" We booked at Golfnow.com and says carts included. He asked us what time is our tee time and we gave him both our teetime and names according to what we always use at Golfnow.com. and yet asked us so many questions like haow many are you where in fact we all four were there standing in front of him, which of course we already told him. He sounded so sarcastic everytime he talked to us. Not sure his name was but seems to be Tim. He even started us late, approximately twenty minutes from our teetime. One thing good was the Marshall, he was more of an elderly guy which started us immediately as he could. Very kind and professional. We had a great short conversation a hole 1. He even came out somewhere at the back nine to see how we were doing. Overall, it was a great experience except for that young guy that I think the golf course management should put him somewhere away from customers.
Always enjoy playing this course
I haven't played the course in quite a while. They had made changes to the course. But as always it was great golf.
