La Contenta Golf Club
About
Nestled in the heart of California Gold Country, La Contenta Golf Course wanders through the foothills of the Sierras. Being surrounded by beautiful mountains, the course feels peacefully secluded and enjoys stunning views, yet it is conveniently just a short drive from Sacramento and the San Joaquin Valley. The layout sprawls across a diverse terrain that ranges from lush valleys to grassy meadows. With the up-and-down of the golf course, accuracy is a necessity, especially with large water features coming into play on a few holes. There are also strategically placed bunkers to contend with. One particularly memorable hole is the par-3 13th. This scenic hole tumbles down from a dramatic elevated tee. La Contenta Golf Course has been one of northern California's most popular public courses for more than three decades.

Great front 9
Able to get around the front 9 in good time, however the starer put in a 4-some at hole 10 that caused the back 9 to take over 3 hours.
Watch out for back nine holes
The course is hilly and challenging on some holes, i.e. , hole 3 and 5 on the front nine and holes 12, 13,14 and 15 on the back nine. Watch out for the multi-tiers green of hole 13. I enjoyed this course and would come back to conquer the back nine soon.
La Contenta was a disappointing golf experience
There were two significant items that led me to my opinion of La Contenta plus a few minor points. Primarily, animals, most likely wild pigs, tore up a half dozen fairways recently and the ground crew wasn't doing anything about it. They had not even roped off the areas and labeled them as ground under repair. Along that line, the grounds keepers would not stop their operations, such as mowing, edging or trimming the area around the green when you approached. Lastly, some type of mower was leaking oil on the greens. That is going to result in dead spots on the greens very soon.
My other main point of contention is the signage on the course. It is very poorly marked. If you don't know the layout of the course, you will spend an inordinate amount of time finding the next tee.
Some minor points are the Pro Shop. It is understaffed. The driving range... there is a series of nets placed in front of some rubber mats. The mats offer no firm footing and the nets give no feedback on your shot.
This course should be a gem in the foothills. Unfortunately, it is not!
Great course and value
I have always enjoyed playing at La Contenta. It's a bit of a drive for me but I would come out to play if the price is right. The greens were rolling pretty good which I prefer. If you haven't played there, you gotta go!
;A Great Test of Skill & Pretty too.
My husband and I played yesterday and were joined by a single gentleman who was very nice and about our same skill level. The course has some very vertical hills, both going up and coming down. Fairways are fairly narrow. The sand traps are not well constructed nor well maintained. Try to avoid them!!! For a course as nice as La Contenta, the traps should be more professionally prepared. For the ladies there are quite a few distance concessions on the longer holes, which takes some obstacles like water out of play. It is still difficult due to terrain and basic layout. I enjoyed it and scored well...my husband not so much!!!
Great Experience
A moderately challenging course with forgiving fairways and more protected greens. Very beautiful and scenic.
Close by
Love the course and proximity to my residence. The 13th hole is in my opinion one of the better holes in the Central Valley.
Nice place to play Golf
Putting surface was really good, but a few greens were damaged
Nice course in Valley Springs
First time back in a very long time (not for any bad reason, but because there are 5 golf courses within 15 minutes or so). Pleasantly surprised by the great conditions of the greens. Rolled great....not too fast and not too slow. Fairways were decent....not perfect but considering the drought in CA I would rate them a B- or so. Mostly good lies, with a very little bare spots. It was a light day in terms of the number of golfers so we were able to play in about 3 hrs 50 min. Friendly staff during check in and nice lady at the turn. Glad I made the drive out there.
We will return to this golf course
The staff at the golf counter were excellent and welcoming.
The course was in very good condition considering the drought in our area. They recycle water to keep the fairways and greens green.
The other golfers were friendly and cooperative.
Our round was very enjoyable. We will return to La Contenta Golf Club for more golf.
Worth the drive
My first time playing La Contenta, and I thought that it was well worth the drive out into the country. The yardage is not exceptionally long, but this is a course more for the tactical player than the long bomber. You don't always need your driver, but you do need to know the yardages and where to lay up to. Its a hard course the first time around. There are a fair number of blind shots with severe doglegs, and there are certain areas of the fairway that you need to lay up to, which you wouldn't really know the first time around the track. I found the holes varied and memorable. The conditions were good especially considering the drought. They are definitely conserving water, though they are doing it intelligently. The greens are watered as are the fairways, although they probably drier than normal. The tees and rough areas are not watered as much. Some of the bunkers also tend to be dried out and hard. The main complaint about the conditioning is actually the cart path! I've never driven a cart path that had so many potholes and areas of broken concrete. It made for a teeth rattling ride. For people who like to walk, I suppose that technically it is walkable, although there is a lot of elevation change. You will need to be above average in fitness to really be able to walk this. Aside from the cart path and the long drive to get there, I thought that the course was great, and well worth a trip.
Great course
We went out to see what this course was like as we have played at 63 courses this year. This is one course we are going back to play again. Excellent bar with great people. Nice crowd and no problems. We had a great time. Greens except #18 were awesome and the fairways are super.
Not worth the drive
Drove 50 minutes to play there. Pro shop is a joke. No driving range. Course in bad shape. Won't go back.
Day of Play
Course was in good condition and can be very challenging.
great value
enjoyed.course is always in great condition.played in about 3 and 1/2 hrs.
value at 26 bucks stretching i5
Still dont understand why they call this a "championship" course. No marshall to oversee pace of play. One green had a puddle of water in it. Had to consult my rule book. 18 green tore up ugly.
Long ride from sacto and not worth the trip. We wont do it again. Course definitely did not live up to the hype
Great value and staff
A great course for the money with the right degree of difficulty. The course is in good condition and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
dogtrack
No driving range- so I hope you live warmed up. Adobe clay for traps. Don't expect to play at a pace other than snail. Cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Fun course to play
We were out of towners and chose La Contenta to begin our golf weekend. What a great choice! My (2) foursomes enjoyed our golf day at La Contenta. From the Pro Shop gentleman to the Starter to the Beer cart person. All were hospitable and pleasant to talk to . They made our group feel quite welcome. Course is in good condition despite our drought conditions in this area. Will definitely return next year.
