The Golf Club at Rio Vista is situated at the heart of northern California. With a scenic spot near the Sacramento River Delta, the course is even named after its scenic river view. The river delta meets rolling hills on this tough providing a unique setting equipped with distinctive water features. The skillfully crafted water holes are the trademarks of the design. The design mimics the natural lines carved by the river delta. The fairways are wide open but lengthy and generous greens can also be quite challenging as well. Rio Vista is a golf course that has appeal for players of all skill levels from novices to pros, whether it's the scenery or the diverse layout. Be careful on windy days though, the open course can be especially brutal.

Not what it used to be

Changes in ownership have not helped the course condition. Windy conditions cause the sprinkler system to be irratic causing burned out spots in the fairways. The greens need rolling and the ttraps are being rebuilt one at a time. Basically, you're getting what you pay for.

Confused

This course used to be in wonderful shape. Not a terribly challenging course but a very nice round of golf could be had at almost any time of the year.
The course has suffered either from neglect weather or what ever a terrible decline. There wasn't any part of the course that wasn't in some sort of dire straits. I just hope they can bring it back to the level of its former playability.

Great layout - terrible condition

The price was great, and the layout of the course is wonderful, but it is in really rough shape, and the driving range has been eliminated.

Rio vista was really windy

We teed of at 7am and were done by 10:15. It was extremely windy that day. The course is in bad shape. Lots of dry patches and weeds on the tee boxes. I won't go back.

In Need of a Lot of Work

It's a good thing that I only paid $12 to play (including cart) otherwise I would have been very upset. The facilities were immaculate (except for not soap in the men's restroom) but the course itself is in need of a lot of work. The fairways were very unkept with weeds, dandilions, etc. everywhere. There were places were there was no grass whatsoever. The tee boxes were in terrible condition. I did not find one bunker with sand in it. They were all washed out. I understand why all the lakes had green water but I don't understand why someone could not do anything about the scum everywhere.
It look like perhaps Trilogy tried to make a Resort course setting for the home owners in the complex but somebody better start doing some serious repairs to the course or I think you're going to have a mutiny on your hands.
I was not aware that I could have added images to my review otherwise I would have because seeing would have been definitely been believing.

go elsewhere

My backyard is better groomed than this course. It is obvious there is no leadership here as there was no beverage cart or even an open snack window. The greens were neglected with disease and not being cut. The fairways were so bad you were better off being in the rough.

Course in very poor condition
Worst bunkers I have seen in over 20 years and I thought there weren't any worse than blue rock out there
Fairways and greens not bad horrible as the bunkers but not even average
Very disappointed as when we played 10 years ago this was a very nice course
I will not be back for at least another 10 years if that
On the positive the hamburger sliders in the grill were fantastic

Worst conditions in the valley.

First time I played the course and it was absoulutely in the worst shape of any course i have played this year. I did talk to the marshal and he said they are working on getting the course back in shape but they have a long way to go.

Think before you drive

course conditions are very poor...my parents live out there, I've played the course for about 10 yrs...worst shape I've ever seen it in...understand the drought...but, no sand in the traps (gulley's running through the sand from watering, standing water, full of weeds)..you seem to get a choice on some holes, swampy or completely dry, earth cracking (hard clay)...hate to see it this way, loved playing it when they opened, but the latest owners seem to be more worried about selling homes than ensuring the golf course is in good shape (ripped out practice facility to build more homes....

A course full of potential.

A good couse layout located on the California Delta, away from the hustle of larger city noise this course could be a real jewel. Even with island type winds ocassionally in the summer, this is a place that is just nice to enjoy the day, and relax with friends for a round of golf. It's unfortunate that a combination of drought, typical sparatic high summer delta winds, ill positioned fairway sprinklers, and green side sprinklers allow the fairways to be underwatered in many areas causing many dead spots resulting in dead grass, dirt and dry soil crack lies. Additionally, the over 70 original sand bunkers which are bascially without any rakeable sand, have never been rebuilt since the course was originally built. These bunkers pack to a very hard consistency after drying from overwatering, ill drainage, and minimal staff maintenance, leaves significant irrigation drainage ruts resulting in lies that even the most advanced player will find extremely frustrating, not to mention a physical danger just trying to get in and out of them as a fall is almost imminent if you are not one of excellent balance. Green conditions on the front side are bumpy to very bumpy. Greens on the back 9 are in good to excellent condition. A green roller would be a good investment. Tee boxes are basically dried out with several dead spots, and soil cracks are the norm.

Nice Layout needs TLC

This course actually has a lot of potential. I found the the layout interesting and challenging. The carts were really nice with GPS. The maintenance of the course was horrible. Weeds on the tee boxes, fairways, greens and sand traps. The sand traps were the worst things I have ever seen. If this course could get a little TLC it would be really nice to play.

Drought

With the California drought, the course is in poor shape. Brown, dead spots on fairway. Greens spotty and bumpy.
This course needs an infuse of money from Warrior, the new owners. Maybe the fall or winter will improve coditions.

Much Improved

We last played here about six months ago and have noticed much improvement in the condition of the greens! They said the bunkers are next on the list of items that need attention...

This course is fun for the average golfer

I have played this course a lot and it is fun to play. It is plenty tough for average golfers. It has several water holes and if you are not careful you will be taking penalty strokes. It is wide and fairly easy to hit fairways if you do not have a big slice or hook. The wind is a problem sometimes but in the summer the wind is good for keeping it a little cooler. Greens are above average and you can three putt if not careful. All in all it is a good place to play. Bunkers need attention at present.
