Carlton Oaks Lodge & Country Club
About
Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Brown Fairway. I think this is the 9th fairway but it is typical of all fairways. Photo submitted by sherpaboy on 02/12/2022

Golfer Reviews
Worth the money yet slightly disappointing
I played this course for the first time. The course was a little burned out in places, but the value is great! I would play it again.
Slow pace of play
Teed off at 10:30. Didn’t get to finish the course because at 2:30 we were barely on hole 13
Too bad
The course has a nice enough layout, but is barely maintained. It's too bad because it course has potential.
Shame on the managers of Carlton Oaks.
We teed off at 5:57 a walking twosome and played the front in 1 hour and 40 minutes. as we made the turn a foursome in carts was in the fairway on 10. We played the back nine in 2 hours and 20 minutes. Totally a revenue grab that was total fail by the golf staff. The course used to be one of San Diego's gems. We played lift, clean and place everywhere including the "Clay" bunkers. It is in a total state of decay with, gross conditions everywhere except the greens which were good. Everyone is making money running golf courses these days with conditions and place of play improving dramatically since Covid. Carlton Oaks has gone backward to degree that makes it almost unplayable. They need to either fix their awful maintainence or get out of the business.
Poor Conditions
This place needs some love. Great layout, poor course conditions.
Rough shape
Been about a year since I’d played here. Was hoping conditions would have improved. Sadly, the course is even worse off than I’d remembered.
Nice check in staff, spectacular cart staff, greens are nice, the rest of the course really is rough. This place used to be special.
Course condition fair
The condition of this course is fair, especially the fairways could be in a better condition. The greens are mostly in good to excellent condition. Green fee should be lower for the quality of this course.
Tough course, tougher conditions
This was a difficult with challenging holes. it's a shame that it's so poorly maintained otherwise this would be a great track. Greens are decent, but fairways are terrible. It's not even that people aren't repairing their divots, there are entire areas where there is little or no grass and you are hitting off mud. Given conditions, this course shouldn't be priced what it is. Starter was friendly and all the staff was nice but man, brutal upkeep.
