Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Horrible conditions

The entire course is basically a wreck. If you’re off the fairway, it felt like you were just going over a million speed bumps (I actually almost lost my phone because of this), of the few fairways I hit, I almost lost my ball in the middle of it, even the cart paths are just bumpy too. Are ball cleaners not a thing in CA? Didn’t see one the entire round.

The ONLY good thing about course conditions was the green and the fact they had water jugs (which is rare that I’ve seen these days). The cart girl was very friendly too, which is an added bonus but doesn’t change my rating.

Best course in San Diego

For the price and openness with tee times during the week. Look no further than Carlton Oaks. Also the food at the clubhouse is killer!

The worst 70 dollars I’ve ever spent

This review has two stars simply due to the on course staff and the greens, everything else needs improvement. Catching fliers out of tee boxes so balls are flying twenty yards further. The fairways have more mole holes than even Chula Vista golf course (if you know you know). The on course staff are friendly and the greens roll true, but do not spend your money here on the weekends unless it’s to eat at the bar. Probably the worst 70 dollars I’ve spent on a Sunday round,

Good to know, I was there two years ago and hoped they had improved the conditions. It's a great property, and a nice layout, but there were so many gopher holes Bill Murray would have lost his mind.

Course could use some attention

Course was in decent shape fairways had some bare spots, tee boxes could use some attention. It was almost like hitting out of the rough especially on the Par 3 holes. The tee boxes had grass longer than the actual rough and were very rough due to people not repairing divots, etc. I especially liked getting hit by sprinklers just after teeing of on the 14th hole. Greens were in good shape the ball rolled very well allowing me to make some fairly long putts. I know the cost of everything here in California makes it difficult to water and purchase what is needed to keep golf courses in great condition and affordable to the average person.

Amazing layout, greens in good condition but fairways could use work. Course let a single jump in front of me on 10 after waiting on two twosomes the entire front because he was a PGA pros student. Didn’t ask or acknowledge my presence, and overall seemed pretty rude. Called the clubhouse and course apologized but didn’t not try to remedy the situation.

Not in good shape at all

I’ve played here numerous times and over the time span of me playing here it was in good condition then it started getting worse and worse and when you have the groundskeeper running sprinklers on the tee box prior to hitting it makes it impossible to not slip or on the par 3s chunk it, I’m not happy with any of it and will not be returning to play here greens are horrible, one green my buddy had to putt through 3 different types of greens and just horrible maintenance.

Would like a refund

I would like a refund. This course was in terrible condition. T boxes were unmarked sporadically and terribly kept. Most of the time they were just mud with a sprinkle of grass. The fairways were predominantly sand and dirt, and greens were equally as bad. This course was 75 / person, and should not have been given the condition. I will never play here again. Given this, the staff was very friendly, but this was not worth the price. Everyone we saw on the course was equally upset about the condition.

Greens good, but slow.

Some times you have to move the ball to find grass in the fairways. Sand traps are raked dirt. Great layout in desperate need of upkeep.

This course has a great layout complete with Mountains views Lakes mature trees

I like the lay out of this course it's out in East County with views of the mountains beautiful lakes. Lots of bunkers. The greens are very nice. The staff is really good the beverage cart girls come around and they're very nice. Definitely worth going there and checking out very challenging course.

Good for Practice

Golf Course is not easy to make good performance. Fairway condition is acceptable and Green speed is so low. And the entire course has steep uphill and downhill slopes, there are many instances where trouble shots are required.

I have a yearly "TeeOff" pass with monthly discount. The rough is "rough" and the greens were aerated a week ago - sandy and slow! Played mid-day with a lot of singles and twosomes making pace of play faster than usual. Could use more water on fairways but fine if you bump them up in the fairways.

Bumpy ride

Laser was dislodged several times due to the bumpy course. How hard would it be to smooth out the paths?

I had a good time at Carlton Oaks GC

I enjoyed my Round with my Daughter at Carlton Oaks, I would like to say that the course is getting better overall. I found it quite in good shape for a nice afternoon of golf. We had a great Sandwich at the bar and Grill to start off our Day. I recommend the grill. It was very good. the Greens were a bit slower than I imagined as most players were not use to the speed. I would say that could be worked one. Overall the Course is a great buy for the price. Thank you to all the staff for a great service and Time.

Will come back again.

Alfonso. E.
