Carlton Oaks Lodge & Country Club
About
Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Golfer Reviews
Bumpy ride
Laser bounced off cart with bumpy cart ride. Course needs work sooner the better for their planned remodel.
Huge potential
Course has huge potential but from what it seems like is that since the course is eventually being shutdown for renovations they have let some of the course fall apart. All the bunkers on the course are in terrible condition and are either hard or dirt bunkers. A lot of trails are just dirt and the rough is just that rough… would help if they would bush hog the rough spots. The greens and tee boxes are nice along with the fairways in front of the greens with a nice putting green at the front of the property and the layout of the course is nice but make sure to bring enough balls if you have a slice or hook case there is not a lot of forgiveness on a few of the holes. Overall I enjoy getting out in the course for a challenging round of golf.
Pleasant Day
Tee boxes and greens were good, some gopher/squirrel damage on the fairways = lost balls. My partner took a drop and it went into a gopher hole! Hilarious. We started backing up three parties on 8, and a call to the pro shop got a Marshall out there in ten minutes to sort it out. All friendly and had a good time. 3 hr 50 min.
Course looks like someone’s abandoned backyard
For $40 you can play on carpet style greens and and dead grass the design of the course is fun but the course is just beat to shreds
Challenging layout
Played Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was slow 5:45. Sunday was 3:45. Guess it just depends who you're behind. Bunkers, most only had a thin layer of sand. Fairways are avg for the area. Rough might be hard pan, loose sand and gopher holes except around greens. Tee's, greens, and areas around greens are in good shape. We saw beverage cart about every 45min. Driving range is worn mats, putting green is decent sized with different elevations. All in all challenging layout, approach shots that are short can be tricky with well placed trees or mounds.
Rough around the edges
Had a GolfNow Hot Deal for $43. Had played out here in 30 years. It’s rough around the edges but fine if you keep it straight down the middle. Greens maybe a bit furry - hit it 1/3 harder than you want to to get it to the hole.
Beautiful Back 9
Greatly appreciate being able to play the back 9 holes in the morning. Perfect that they allow this and wish all course did similar. The course turf and visual was beautiful, rough is challenging to find balls and assume that they was swallowed up in one of the numerous gopher holes. Love the roly poly fairways and greens. The only 'wish' is that the bunkers had actual sand vs the hardpan-thought that was strange.
Will absolutely do this one again.
Just a gem!
Such a great course. It’s a great mix of relaxing and challenging holes. Beautiful scenery on every hole and an easy place to spot wildlife of all sorts! Course is in great shape!
Better than before
Course was in better shape than last time I played. Definitely seems like more effort was put into it. Kinda get what u can here. Layout is puzzling and tricky. Lot og dry areas and dirt. Cart girl 10 out of 10.
GREAT LAYOUT BUT 6 HOUR ROUND IS BRUTAL
I have played Carlton Oaks a number of times over the last couple years and routinely make the drive from South Orange County to play. It is a great layout and has a price point that won't break the bank. However, despite the awesome layout, the conditions are notoriously brutal and the pace of play. The last couple times I have been here has been a minimum of 5 and 1/2 hours with the last one just shy of 6 hours. A 5-hour round is already pushing it but 6 hours with no Marshall pushing groups along is unacceptable. I would strongly reconsider making the drive back down until that issue is resolved.
