About
Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Rip Off
This course is terrible condition. The fact that they charge $60 on a weekday is almost criminal. Avoid this place like the plague!
Used to be worth the money
Fairways and bunkers are in terrible condition. Greens are nice. Pace of play was fking horrendous! The marshals did nothing to speed up play, ‘at least your playing golf in San Diego’ was his response.
Definitely not worth the money!!!

Greens & tee boxes were my biggest complaint
Greens would check ALWAYS when you chip on to them, but putts would ALWAYS be super fast.
The tee boxes were pretty poorly kept, not going to lie. A lot of them simply had sand in them and I had to sometimes move my tee ball to just outside of the markers to find some actual grass to hit off of.

Poor
Greens and bunkers ok, but rest of course in bad shape. Back 9 took nearly 3 hrs. Way overpriced. Only positive was friendly cart girl.

Fairway or dirt/rocks
Bunkers are hard dirt, rocks and/or water.
If you're not in the fairway, you're on dirt.
Lake was full of algae and looked terrible.
Place used to be great. Now it's not.

Rough
This course is totally neglected. The photos on this site must be pretty old, from its glory days. Everything about it was rough, even worried about driving the carts over some of the bridges.
For what we paid with a cart, it wasn’t a bad “value” but not a place I’d visit again.

Course Restaurant
My group plays this course about once every two months and after the round we are starved. The last two times we played after the round we wanted to patronize the restaurant but the wait staff was not sufficient as one person was working at the bar. We sat and waited for a server and no one helped us. We went to the bar and asked for menu’s and were given menu’s and still no one helped us. There are plenty of restaurants near the course and that’s where we went to eat.

Lots of ground under repair. Course was nice. Greens were challenging. Enjoyed playing the course. Cart girl quit that day so they were left with only one, but she was nice and didn’t let it affect her performance.

Course is fun to pay and offers a good challenge. However, it is run down and seen better days.
