Carlton Oaks Lodge & Country Club
About
Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Terrible Conditions
The courses in general and the courses fairways or lack of, were absolutely trash. The greens and around the greens very nice condition. This is not a 60+ dollar round of golf. Disappointed won’t be playing in Carlton Oaks for quite some time or ever again if they don’t improve. 2 others in my party feel the same way.
Rare to find any actual fairway grass.
Wish this place would invest in making this Dye course the gem it should be. Pretty atrocious fairways at this point, and it cannot be simply attributed to dormant grass or high water costs.

Good day of golf but....
Carlton Oaks was in it's usual condition. Not much grass in the fairways, horrible bunkers and good greens. We expected that before we came to play. We don't complain about the conditions, because the layout is excellent. The difficulty is magnified by the wind in the afternoon. These things we enjoy. What we didn't enjoy was the starter sending out a single, on a Saturday, in between foursomes, that was probably an employee who was off duty or a "friend" of someone. This single took his sweet time, hitting multiple balls without a concern for anyone behind themselves. Send your pal out on a weekday, not on a very busy weekend. Thank you.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us, harddraw. We are going to pass on your feedback to the team. Thanks for visiting Carlton Oaks Lodge & Country Club, and we hope to see you again in the future.
Not worth the weekend rate (FAIR/UNBIASED REVIEW)
Course layout was challenging and would be an amazing track if it weren’t for how poorly it’s been kept. It’s shameful and highkey disrespectful that this is the current state a Pete Dye design.
Greens… good… roll nicely with well placed undulation.
Fairways… horrible… mostly barren, no reward for good shots whatsoever.
Bunkers… might as well not even play them, no strategic gain whatsoever
Overall Design… could be a great track if it were just kept in better shape.
I don’t normally write reviews because courses should speak for themselves and I don’t really complain too much since golf has been a privilege to enjoy, BUT I WOULD BE REMISS IF I DIDNT WARN FELLOW GOLFERS….. Carlton Oaks is not currently worth its weekend rate. I don’t understand how better courses have been closed down permanently and this one has been allowed to continue on.

A Diamond in the Rough
This was my first time playing Carlton Oaks Golf Club and I have wanted to play this course for awhile. I played with friends who have played the track before and was warned that the layout is challenging. Well this Pete Dye designed course did not disappoint in the challenge aspect with rolling fairways with narrow approaches to hidden greens surrounded by daunting bunkers. Bunkers are aplenty on this course so hit em straight and true. The hazards are very well placed and brilliant in design and beauty. So you might think from the review so far that all is well and good at Carlton Oaks but there is horror ahead and that horror lies in the fairways mainly. The fairways resembled barren desert and I half expect a caravan of nomads to cross our path. To say that there is a lack of grass is an understatement since you were lucky to find a small patch of the green stuff to hit off of, foot wedges were a must just to not hit off of hard compacted clay soil. The fairways were a true disappointment to a brilliantly designed course that challenged all of us in the two groups we had. I would play here again if I could see with my own eyes that this dying course was brought back to the staggering beauty that it must have been in its heyday. The staff was excellent from the guy working the Pro Shop counter to the Starter and the Marshall. Pace of play was perfect as this is no course for an absolute beginner unless best ball is being played with a.more skilled player. All the groups maintained perfect distance so we never felt rushed or even waited for a tee box until the very last hole. I yearn for this course to be brought back to greatness which would then justify the stout tee fee. Please someone rekindle this course.

Very disappointed
I’ve been playing Carlton Oaks for many years and I keep hoping the conditions would improve. But every time I go back, the conditions are actually worse. There’s never a clean fairway.. So many leaves and dirt patches everywhere. And so much mud everywhere. My suggestion is to get rid of all of the unnecessary shrubbery and make it more of a dessert style golf course. I honestly can’t think of one hole that was esthetically pleasing. It’s too bad, cause the layout is nice and challenging. But the course in general just looks and plays like horrible.

This course has gone downhill.
The course has a driving range, bar, Grill, and rooms you can rent.
On the course we saw Turtles, Blue herons, Hawks, a Swan and two Coyotes.
I played this as a Hot deal at $33.00 which included a cart. I would have been upset if I paid the $50.00 and then had to pay for a cart.
I have played this course numerous times in the past 12 years and it has gone downhill. The greens and areas around them are green and in good shape. The tee boxes have grass on them. The track is awesome and used to have sand in the bunkers/waste areas and grass in the fairways. Unfortunately, the sand and the fairway grass are gone. The staff has always been great.
The round took over five hours to play because the group that was two groups in front of us got over a hole behind. They had a baby with them, which is fine, I don't think that is what slowed them down on the back nine. However but we never saw a marshall we never saw a marshal on the back nne and it seemed like there was two on the front nine.
I would only reccomend this course through the "Hot Deals" option.
As others have said, this course needs some TLC. I hope it gets it.

carlton oaks
Place needs lots of work, fairways a mess, tee boxes, shabby, great marshall in Ron. Overall, won't go back there, too bad, could be great place.
Thank you for reviewing the course. Let us first start by apologizing for the poor experience you had during your visit. The current condition is by no means the standard we strive to achieve and are working diligently to improve the course. Thank you for playing and we hope to see you again soon.

Great layout terrible condition
Great layout terrible condition It’s a shame that such challenging course and great layout is wasted because they did not water the fairways. Greens and round greens were in very good condition otherwise worse than a cow pasture. At least on cow pasture there is grass.

Increase your index
Fairways need lots of work.
Rip them up level them out and replant them.
Remove the rocks from bunkers and add sand.
Grade the green to tee areas for walking and push carts.
This could be a wonderful course with some $ and TLC as it was in the old days.

Lots of dry spots on the fairway
this course was pretty dry and needs some TLC for sure. The greens were nice but the fairways were in bad shape. Also, it’s pretty expensive to play here. I was expecting more from this course but it did not impress me.
Hi, Robster85! Thank you so much for leaving us with your feedback. We value our customer experience, so your review is important to us. We will make note and we hope to see you back at Carlton Oaks Lodge & Country Club!

Greens Keeper Wanted
Staff was great but the course needs to be kept in better shape. Traps have no sand (cement dirt), fairways were dead, area's around the green were bare and tough to chip from. San Diego has been getting rain and good weather, so there's no reason the course should be this poor of condition. Also, the ball machine at the driving range ran out twice while we were waiting to play our round.
