Very tough golf course

I was intrigued by the reviews for this golf course. They were not misleading. Hardest course I have ever played. I am a 9 handicap at my home course and shot a 96 from the white tees which I was pleased with. The starter recommended the member tees but they were basically the same tees as the women's tees and my wife would not stand for that. Very unfriendly course for women. No senior women’s tees and a lot of long carries off the green tees. Dry fairway conditions contributed to the difficulty. Would like to play in better conditions but leave wife home

Beautiful layout

The course architecture is insane. Tons of undulation blind shots and forced carries depending on what tees you play. Definitely one to come back and play again or play if you haven’t.

NEVER DISAPPOINTS

Royal New Kent golf club is fairly challenging for an average golfer, but the overall beauty of the course (especially the front nine), makes it a worthwhile endeavor. The Greens are always in great shape, with just enough undulation to keep one's score respectable. I always look forward to a round on this Mike Strantz designed course.

Good and Ugly

First I want to say the course was amazing. Staff was pretty friendly. However the pace of play was atrocious. Made the turn at 3.5 hours and there were 6 groups on hole 10. For the price of the course this is unacceptable in my opinion. Would consider playing again if the tee times were managed better

Top Class Course

From the first tee shot to the final putt every shot is a challenge but totally fair, emphasis on approach play as some severe slopes on the greens. , Cannot rate it highly enough. If your in the area at all don’t miss it. Some really difficult holes, with blind shots. Invest in a yardage book and select the correct tees. You won’t be disappointed.

Awesome course go play it!

The course was in great condition the pins are blind on most of the holes but if you know your distances on each club then you shouldn't have a problem.

Fabulous Facility

From the point you arrive in the parking lot through the end of your round, it is a great experience! There were bottles of water on ice in the cart cooler and towels up front for each rider in the cart. The course was in superb condition. The greens were fantastic and the views from the tee boxes are breathtaking. The Club Pro was out on the course in a cart and stopped to talk with us, a very rare act for any courses I have played in the Richmond area.

When we completed our round and arrived at our vehicle in the parking lot, a young staff member brought us an ice cold bottle of water and told us when we were done offloading our clubs, to just park the cart in an empty parking spot and he would come and get it! Again, something I have never experienced at any other golf course in the area. A Fabulous Golf experience at any price!

Royal New Kent

The course is in great shape. The greens are some of the best I have played this year. This is a course that can be extremely punishing if you are off your game, and it can be very rewarding when you are striking the ball well. They have a great practice range.

Ireland Golf via Virginia Setting

Royal New Kent is a great layout. The range was in good shape. Nothing to brag about. The chipping and bunker practice area were great and gave a true feel. The starter was friendly and gave pointers to us, since it was our first time playing there. The layout has Stranz written all over it. The conditions were firm and it played true to it. The only thing missing is an ocean breeze to bring the wind into play. We didn't finish our round due to lightning. The clerk in the Pro Shop was friendly about rescheduling us to finish our round. The manager...Not so much. I will for sure go back to finish what I started (shot a 43 on the front).

Must Play

Went with my father for a 9am Saturday tee time. It was my fathers first time playing the course but we have played other mike strantz courses. We had 2 foursomes in front of us but the pace of play wasn’t bad. 4.5 hours total. Staff brought water around and had coolers at the 1st tee to fill up. I love the course, and the staff is great.

This will be the very last time I play Royal New Kent course! Very rude golf club manager and overpriced.

I had booked a foursome early in the week (based off of my guest's request) and when I showed up with only myself and my 1 guest - because the other 2 players had canceled at the last minute (no fault of my own), I was publicly scolded in front of everyone standing in the proshop as if I was the manager's 5-year old kid.

I guess the 2 of us (me and my guest) should have just not shown up at all to pay our near $100 green fees each, but while standing there to pay this high price (on time), the manager felt it necessary to scold me who actually showed up as committed and paid in full... and went as far as to go on and say that next time my friends decide to cancel at the last minute he was going to charge me full price for anyone of my other no-show guests. (You do the math on that at this fee, good luck with that!) He made this threat with a scolding tone as if I, a 54 year old grown man man, was his 5-year old kid. I then kindly apologized and said he could put us with other singles or double players, to which he only replied with rolled eyes and a disgusted smirk.

If I wasn't with my friend who really wanted play, I would've refused to pay altogether and simply walked right out of there at that very second. Instead, we paid our $98 each and moved on... We moved on to also pay $32 ($27 plus 5 for tip, because who doesn't tip?)... for 6 beers with no bag of ice included at all... $27 for 6 domestic light beers with no bag of ice (really)?! Talk about 5 star pricing with 2 dollar product and service!

Both me and my friend live right here in Brickshire neighborhood, and this is the last time we play that overpriced Royal New Kent who has a rude jerk running the place... Yes, we'll stick with any of the other 3 courses in New Kent (Brickshire, Viniterra, or Brookwoods), where they are nice and respectful to paying customers who show up to play on time regardless if someone else in the group cancels at the last minute beyond their control.

Aeriated greens ruined outing

This weekend I planned a golf outing for a longtime friend visiting from out of town. We had many courses in the Williamsburg area to choose from. We chose Royal new Kent because of the reviews saying how nice the course and greens were. When we got there the first thing we noticed is that the greens were aeriated. What a disappointment. It ruined what we expected to be a fun day at a good course .
