This course was too challenging for my skill. I really enjoyed the course, but I will really need to work on my skill level before I return. Most of the fairways are very tight. Greens are fast and depending on pin placement you can find your ball rolling off into a bunker or back out on the fairway if your putt is too long. A lot of the bunkers are deep making it difficult to hit out and onto the green. If you are a better than average golfer you will really enjoy this course. Otherwise, bring lots of balls!

Although very difficult, and super fast greens it is the best golf experience one will ever have, regardless of score. I will be back foe sure !

Waited 20 minutes before a starter could be found. Was told the bathrooms indoors were out of order, but that there were plenty of porta-John’s on the course (there were 2). There was no water available on the course. Didn’t see any ball cleaners either. That’s the bad. The course itself is a masterpiece though. Hands down the most difficult course I have ever played, but I would happily return to get my butt kicked again. I would also recommend playing this course to anyone who even remotely loves the game.

Each hole is like its own world. Very challenging layout and difficult greens but an awesome experience.

First off, the welcome was top notch. First time there and will go back for another beating ! Ha ! The course is immaculate, greens are like marble fast and lots of incline no matter where you putt from.. rated 14 after all. Hurt me some more !

Lost a few balls, but you can find lots if no one playing behind you.. watch for those thorns in the weeds... Yup been there..

Played in 4.5 hours...

You can easily add 10-12 strokes to your game, but who's counting.. Had the best golf experience of my life. Really!

By the way, this is the 15th hardest course in the USA, but don't let that stop you.. play the member's or green tees.. don't be ashamed ! Oh, have fun...

This course is an absolute must play, it is the most unique layout in Virginia and provides one of the best challenges of any golf course in the country. The conditions are often top notch, the people are always friendly and you get to experience an absolute gem of a course from Mike Strantz. Go and enjoy, just dont expect to shoot low.

We drove up at ten minutes to 1pm and were intercepted by a young man who pretty much asked us if we were sure we were supposed to be playing golf there. Mind you, we were fully dressed in Pinehurst attire and Titleist caps. He didn't even allow us to come inside at first, and instead encouraged me to pull up the Golf Now reservation and show him right then and there, in the parking lot. He had started to pick up our bags, and then promptly put them down until I could pull up the actual reservation. He proceeded to say how Golf Now had been giving him such a difficult time with their booking arrangements, telling us how he had only just called them moments ago to give Golf Now a piece of his mind. Ultimately, the young man said we could come in and instead of a 1PM tee time, we could have a 1:20. We said we had no issues being flexible, and agreed to the 1:20. I then asked if I could use the restroom, to which he replied that I could. At 1:10, he asked my husband if his "darling bride" could come as we were needed to join the group to tee off. So you understand what happened here: we arrive BEFORE our tee time, we agree to take a LATER tee time with no complaint, I ask to use the restroom and am rushed to finish, all in a sarcastic manner no less! When I had tried to show a good sense of humor over being told that our tee time couldn't be honored, and that given how good we are we can get double our money by hitting 153 strokes in a round, he then said how he "would need to ask us to maintain pace of play." So much for trying to help lighten what was a negative kickoff to our first round of golf in the state of Virginia. He made us feel like we were so out of place, I finally asked him if this was a private club. Because that's exactly how he spoke to us: like where our desired destination is back the way we came. To the young man: Dearest Honey Bunny, you belittled the WRONG "lover-of-writing-reviews/darling bride". I wish I could be the fly on the wall when your boss goes over this review with you :)

We get to the course at 1 when we have a 2:10 tee time, we get told to go off back 9 behind 3 to 4 foursome groups! There were at least 6 carts on the tee box as we are riding up. We teed off at 2:50 and finished 8 holes in 3.5 hours. Utterly ridiculous seeming how early we got there, even asked about best time to tee off from the many groups ahead of us. I traveled almost 2 hours to play 8 holes and watch two groups play in front of me; terrible experience. Marshall didn't seem to care at all about our pace of play concern before the round. The course is great, but pace and lack of staff caring ruined the whole trip.

September 28, 2022. The course was in very good shape. Fairways not plush but very playable. The greens were U.S.Open level hard and fast. High approach shots were leaving no ball mark and puts required a VERY soft touch. We employed a defensive putting strategy. The course is an aesthetic pleasure.

This course was much too tough for me as a mid handicapper. The greens are in great shape but almost impossible for me to handle. Although a beautiful course, it is not enjoyable unless you relish a true challenge of your skills. Bring extra balls!

Mike strantz design treated with the utmost respect by the team at a Royal New Kent. It’s a great challenge with a ton of fun mixed in. Better bring the whole golf bag ready to go because you’ll need every club to play well here!
