Fun, challenging layout. Great experience.

7hc. Familiar Strantz design-lots of up/down and somewhat blind tee shots and approach shots. For winter, the conditions were really excellent. Much better than other area courses. Fairways were dry and the greens really smooth and true. If you play the right tees, and keep it out of the bunkers, it's very playable. Misses are very penal, though. I had the place almost to myself and had a blast.

Great Layout

Great course layout. Pace of play was an issue. Although it was off season and there were a lot of singles behind 3 and 4 somes creating an issue on pace of play. Suggest teaming these singles together to improve everyone’s experience. Nearly hit twice even though we were waiting on a walking single that insisted on playing the champion tees!

A hidden gem

Absolutely terrific experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and the warm-up area was top tier. The course is in fantastic shape and presented me with challenges I’ve never faced in my 15 years of golfing. An awesome day!

Thank you for the great review.! Mike Strantz designed and built a beautiful layout. One that is never boring. He modeled it after two of his favorite Irish courses, Royal County Down and Ballybuinion. Golf Ireland in Virginia!

A Gem

One of the best courses I've ever played, with outstanding conditions (and very fast greens) for February despite the colder weather for the last month, even in southern Virgina.

The layout is fair but you must control you shots, or be a far above average player to score. Not being used to Bermuda grass, even low and dormant, I had to struggle to control chip shots around the green and was somewhat frustrated by the lack of rollout in the fairways, making the course play even longer. But scoring wasn't the point for me and as long as you just enjoy each hole on its own merit -- and there are no bad holes -- and play the correct tee box for your skill level, it's great to play on a course good enough to host pro events if called upon.

I played my second nine with the course's general manager, who opted that slow Friday afternoon on a warm day to "play a few holes" which turned into a very pleasant whole side. Very friendly guy who clearly loved his course and it deserve the accolades.

Making full use of the natural terrain, setting up some blind shots but generally shorter ones with just a wedge, this course creates a holistic golf experience for anyone with a steady enough game (or enough extra golf balls) to shot a forgettable score and still treasure the day. It's a must play if in the Richmond / Williamsburg area.

Don’t miss playing this course

If in the Williamsburg/Richmond area you have to play this course once. But a warning…….it is hard.

You need some balls, if you spray it you aren’t finding it on some holes.

Very unique course with beautiful holes. Large greens, but none are flat. You will 4 putt from time to time.

The bunkers need some work, but I haven’t played a course in 2 years that the bunkers didn’t need some work.

Usually, you can get around the course on a weekday seeing very few groups.

Thank you for the great review! Mike Strantz only built seven courses, all unique. He modeled RNK after two of his favorite Irish courses, Royal County Down and Ballybuinion. Under new ownership in 2019, the course was completely renovated to the way Strantz built it in 1997. Glad you enjoyed playing. Hope you can make it back soon.

Interesting Course

One of the most interesting and different courses I have ever played. Plays tough, would absolutely recommend to a friend because it’s in great shape and to see the look on their faces at the shots you have to hit here.
