Royal New Kent Golf Club

Just played here for the second time, and I’ve gotta say that it’s now my favorite course in the RVA area. First trip here is daunting as the holes have obstacles and turns, and you don’t know the course. But coming back for a second time is a blast. The obstacles make for creative golf, and the conditions will challenge you (had a 337yd drive with wind on #1, 270yd (well-hit) drive against wind and light rain several holes later). Impeccable fairways and greens right now. Management and staff are cool good people, the best around. Will be returning as frequently as possible.

This was my first time playing Royal New Kent and I will be returning every chance I get. I'm from the Virginia Beach area and the drive was entirely worth it to experience what this course had to offer and the friendliness of the staff. Beautiful views from every hole, one of the most challenging layouts and great conditions all around. Thank you for an unforgettable experience!

Treat yourself to a delightful and beautiful, challenging round of golf. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Many holes feature rambling stone walls, meandering brooks, blind approaches obscured by daisy-and gorse-covered hills and spectacular vistas. To play here in Tidewater Virginia, you may feel as if transported to western Ireland. A thoroughly enjoyable experience, especially if you remain in the fairways.

We thoroughly enjoyed playing Royal New Kent conveniently located between Richmond and Williamsburg. The staff was friendly and helpful and the carts were equipped with ball washers, club cleaners and, even amidst the Covid health measures, had bottled water which was a welcome and thoughtful touch.

The course was in very good shape and, though the land is generally flat in the Tidewater region, was hilly—we were glad to have taken carts. Many of the holes are reminiscent of ones we’ve played in Ireland, featuring rambling stone walls, uneven topography with blind shots, punitive rough, abundant wildlife and scenic views. A challenging, beautiful course that we will eagerly play again.

The renovation of Royal New Kent would make Mike Strantz proud. The greens are better than any private course I have played in the last two years... and the layout is by far the most unique, thought provoking and creative layout in the commonwealth. The staff takes care of us every time we drive 90miles to play (8 rounds in the last two months). Despite the other great courses in the area, we only play RNK. It’s hard to pass up! 5 stars, no question about it!!

Having been fortunate enough to play a few links courses in Ireland, this was truly the closest experience I have found on this side of the atlantic. The course is both fun and challenging, with every hole providing a unique layout. The course does an excellent job incorporating the terrain into the experience, and the staff is world class. Cant wait to come back!

Amazing course, amazing staff, and an amazing day overall. Some friends and I played this course on a day where the weather conditions were questionable at best (tropical storm off the coast), and even with the previous day having been a complete washout, the course was in amazing shape. Having been fortunate enough to have played a few links courses in Ireland, I can say that this is without question the closest I have come to that experience on this side of the Atlantic. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. And the course is without a doubt one of the most fun you'll find in the Mid atlantic, with every hole providing a different challenge / layout, and the conditions are phenomenal. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great golf experience in Virginia.

Im from Boston played here in 2012 and always wanted to play again so I did. New management company is doing a great job with this course. Greens are some of the best Ive putted extremely difficult but they roll true. Played in 2-3 club you already need your A game to play this course the wind gave you the feeling you were play the Irish Open.

The beauty forced me to fully commit to my shots. It requires my patients just to get ready to hit my ball when the wind slightly die down. It made me a strategic hitter where to put my balls onto the next. I truly enjoyed playing the course that I joined a second round with my husband.

Very nice pure golf course. You will be challenged to hit all types of shots. The Bermuda greens are large but sometimes very narrow. A great course, make sure to bring your A game.. Will be back!

I drove down from DC to play and really enjoyed the challenge. If you can’t hit your drive 270+ it’s an almost impossible course from the Invicta tees. This Mike Strantz layout is amazing, long but with the same flair as the ones in NC. .

The only problem with the course is the fairway, which looked and felt more like a low cost muni than a world class club.

I had a awesome time at royal new kent golf course. The people are friendly and the course is challenging. I would definitely recommend this course to others.

Royal New Kent Golf Course and Club is one of the best places we have played! The course is difficult which makes it that much more fun! The conditions were amazing, even out of peak season. The staff at the club is the nicest we have met out of the dozen courses we have been to. My husband and I have played here twice and this is my favorite course hands down.

Very fun course if you like the links style of golf courses.

Only glaring omission is that there were virtually zero yardage markers anywhere besides the tee box. On a course like that you must have yardage markers somewhere. Other than that no complaints. Great course.

The new champion Bermuda greens are the best in Richmond area...roll true and will receive a well struck shirt iron shot. Fairways are starting to green up and will easily be the best 18 holes in this part of Virginia. Will happily travel the hour each way to play here again!

I've reviewed this course many, many times but I always like to provide an update whenever warranted. SO much has been said about how fun a layout this is (and it's all true!) and how challenging it is (especially the first three and last three holes), so I won't go into all of that here again.

The conditions are very good right now. Still a couple soggy spots in the predictable places but the bunker sand has settled in and the sand traps look and play amazing now.

Greens are rolling a little slower than I expected (they've been as fast as 11.5-12 during previous visits) but the course difficulty is high enough without runaway putts so I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. The ball still rolls smoothly, that's the important thing.

A wonderful staff and very competitive pricing make it an easy decision to come an hour from the west side of Richmond to play and many of my Twitter friends who live up by DC or further have all said they think it's worth the trip for them, I couldn't agree more!
