The golf course at Red Mountain Ranch & Country Club is a beautifully designed layout set against a desert landscape with rock formations, mesquite trees, and cacti. Pete and Perry Dye designed the course, combining both beauty and challenge. This championship course was built on rolling terrain and has large, sharply contoured greens and extensive mounding that is reinforced with railroad ties. There are not only deep sand bunkers but also grass bunkers protecting the greens. There are also four ponds on the course at Red Mountain Ranch & Country Club, but only three create water hazards that come into play on four holes. A notable hole on the course in which water comes into play is the sixth, a hole that has a peninsula green with water surrounding it along three sides.

It could be a great course if someone was managing it

The layout is typical Pete Dye - challenging level of tightness and approach risk reward - that part is good

But the greens - ??! - I can understand that they can’t be super fast as the undulations are severe but - they were soooo bumpy in prime season - some of the worst I’ve seen in the area - I just get the impression the people taking care don’t care - there are much better places to play

Also a number of areas with heavy mud - !? seems like maintenance is run amok

Traps were hard, not sand.

Some nice vistas, but a lot of touch lies.

Solid test

Great Dye layout with a ton of elevated greens. Starter told us course played 400 - 500 uarsa longer than on the card…..not true. Probably a pace of play strategy. Will play again, and next time from the back tees.

Challenge experience

For the average golfer, the course is a challenging but enjoyable experience, bunkers could use an upgrade and for first time golfers on the course GPS would have been helpful.

Mangled by Red Mountain

My day started badly and didn't get a whole lot better as I played. First it was an early round and extremely cold out. I bought a bag of balls and proceeded to the range. Dropped the balls on the grass and bent over to place one for a practice shot. Split my trousers from top to bottom. Left my balls at the range and went in to the pro shop to buy a pair of long pants to replace mine. Didn't have any long pants in stock so I wound up buying a pair of shorts. The man behind the counter was good to me as he gave me the member price. However, I nearly froze out on the golf course. With no warm up at the range, with my hands and legs freezing and with the high degree of difficulty this course presents (Pete Dye designs are very intimidating) I proceeded to shoot my worst round this year. Course is in good shape and I'd like another go at it but this day just wasn't in the cards for me.

Excellent condition

This course is challenging but fairways and greens in excellent condition! It entails some walking up and down steeper slopes that can be difficult for those who do not walk well or are older.

Pete Dye would not be impressed if he saw the course today.

Nice day

We enjoyed playing the course. It has a lot of character and different challenging holes. On the fairways and greens things were in pretty good condition. Off the fairway, the grass was marginal, or not at all.

Overall, compared to other courses in prime season, this course is reasonable for the money, and nice as a mix in if you are in town multiple days for golf.

Very nice Desert course

Nice course with tough, but true greens. In great condition. A target course for sure. I used a lot of irons off the tee box, not really a "grip it and rip" course unless you're really accurate with a driver and you don't drive over 300 yards. I had fun with the challenges presented.

Dye-Yes,: Trap Maintenance-No

As with other Pete Dye courses, this has a great layout with lots of RR ties and difficult bunkers. But the bunkers apparently had not been touched in weeks. All were like concrete! Would be 5 stars, but without bunkers it gets down to 3. Also, no ranger or beverage cart.

First time playing

Stayed at airbnb in area wanted to play the course. Hard to find convenient tee time in Feb. Course needs work on tee boxes. Pace of play was slow. Great practice area, pro shop was closed when finished would like to purchase items. Oh well. Will play again when in the area.
