Papago Golf Club
About
Papago Golf Course is conveniently situated just a few minutes from downtown Phoenix though you would never be able to tell with the peace and seclusion provided by the course's location in Papago Park. The golf course sits at the base of Papago Buttes, past the rugged red rocks you can see Phoenix skyline. The course was designed by William Francis Bell, whom you may know for Torrey Pines in San Diego. The challenging layout features undulating greens framed with strategically placed bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding. Water hazards appear on a few holes as well. It's a tough but straightforward layout that is still playable for a range of skill levels. Since opening in 1963, Papago has hosted numerous events including the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and Phoenix Open Qualifying.

Papago Buttes! Photo submitted by Hansel4033523 on 05/11/2013
BACK AFTER 7 YEAR HIATUS
WALKING TO FIRST TEE I DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE VIEW. THEY HAVE REMOVED HUNDREDS OF TREES. THE TEES AND FAIRWAYS WERE MUCH BETTER THAN THE LAST TIME I PLAYED(2007). THE GREENS WERE GOOD AND FAST. THE BUNKERS ARE NUMEROUS AND ARE WELL KEPT-PLENTY OF SAND SO YOU CAN GET UNDER THE BALL.
Slow play
Waited almost every shot
Traps are well placed
Mostly walkers played there
Good foursome!
Played with a nice couple from Calgary and a guy who played on the mini tour and has done some caddying. We had a great round on a gorgeous day. The young guy and I(62) played about 6700 yards. This course is in very good shape as long as you keep the ball in play. There are no level lies and some very challenging holes including a 240 yd par 3 and a 585 yd par 5 from our tees. Fairways and greens were excellent but if you were off a little you were in poor ground with rocks! Booked online for an excellent twilight rate and easily finished before dark. I play to a 6 and shot 37 on the back so life is good! Papago is a very good value and I certainly will book again.
Overseeding excellent
When I come to the sunny climates in the winter, I expect a good fairway overseeding. The ball sat up nicely in the fairways. Enjoyable.
I played the blue tees. 6,800 yards. A good early season test.
A little over priced at $84 on a Tuesday.
Great Course but slow
The course was in excellent shape for the winter with overseed on fairways and greens. The only problem was a bad backup at the par 3 17th. Four groups on the hole late in the day. We barely finished before dark taking more than 4-1/2 hours to complete round. Our plating partners just walked over to Hole 9 and played in from there rather than wait the almost 20 minutes. Also, bunkers on entire course were very inconsistent and mostly chipping out was the only way to extricate the ball.
Nice layout and conditions
Fun course. Long Par threes. Nice mix of holes. Fog was so bad for 9 holes couldn't see ball land. Cleared u on back.
Course rating
Very nice. Staff was friendly. Although they let a 5 somesom out which slowed our play
Beautiful Course and mountain views
My husband and I really enjoyed this course. It was in very good condition and challenging enough to keep our interest. Loved the views. We certainly want to play this course again.
Good course, but not good enough for the price
This was a nice course, but more expensive than all the others we played. If it were cheaper I would recommend it. Getting around the course was a little difficult as the signs were somewhat lacking and there were no paved cart paths. My opinion is that there are better courses for your money.
Worst greens ever......
I was really excited to play this course. I have seen it from the air multiple times as I landed in PHX airport. I really wanted to play here as it looked very nice from the air. I have never been so disappointed in a course before. The greens were as hard as a rock. If you hit what would normally run as a 3 foot putt would roll out 12 feet or more. It was like putting in the parking lot.
The pace of play was terrible. We waited on every hole and each shot. Sometimes there would be several groups waiting on the tee box. The group behind us hit into us a couple times. Once they actually hit my cart while I was in it as I was preparing to leave the green. No apology. Didn't yell "fore" nothing.
Do not play this course. Over-priced, no rangers, no common courtesy. Horrible greens. The club house is a trailer. Honest to God.....a trailer.
The ONLY bright spot was that the staff was very nice and polite. They still need a ranger or space the tee times out more.
Calgary Golfer
Perfect weather. When you sign up as a single in Phoenix, they give you your own separate cart even though they could sit you in the same cart with another single. Awesome! Good practice facilities.
Trailer for bathrooms and clubhouse...yuck.
Teeboxes mostly good, but some not so good. Fairways excellent. Greens smooth and moderate fast.
Play is slow!!!! No marshalls.
Fair layout. Played from tips 7300 yds.
First Time at Papago
Wow Great weather and good course conditions.
This course is a challenge and a solid test of your golfing skills. Large greens and can be intimidating for speed and line of putts.
I am glad I played of the white tees after talking to the starter. 15 handicap and over 60 it was good advice.
I can see why this course is a US Open and Senior Tour qualifier.
Play it and you will see what I mean. Ball placement off the tee is important.
Enjoy the challenge.
great challenge
awesome public golf course,5 star service, too bad it was cool and windy, made a tough track really tough
Back in a long time
It's been at least 8 years since I played at Papago last time. I expected to see some change in course layout but mostly, it looked the same. Desert area and over grown junks were cleaned out very nicely though. Greens were great as always and fairways were descent. They are short of some cart paths from being one of the top rated courses.
challenging, excellent conditions
Bring your A game. If you hit it well you'll be rewarded with green in superb shape. If you mis-hit the ball you may be in the middle of a large 6 foot deep bunker - hack away!
course is in great condition
The fairways are in beautiful condition as long as you hit them. The greens were quick and true. Looking forward to my next round there.
Best municipal course in Phoenix
A challenging championship layout with nice views of the papago buttes. The greens were fast and true with lots of undulation and break with some difficult pin placements which made them very challenging. The fairways were green and lush but the only criticism was there were lots of divot holes and no sand/seed mix on the carts to repair them. Difficult bunkering on most holes and most of the par 3's play very long.
Reasonable play. Pace hassle not appreciated.
Relatively straight forward course. No gimmicks. Good condition. Nice backdrop. We were hassled by the Marshall on pace without cause. Finished round in 3 hours 40 min after being split up. They advertise pace at 4 hours 20 min. Clubhouse could use an update.
good value course!
this is a great layout course! The value is usually good but it is starting to get pricey enough where other similar courses are competitive also and in many cases better deals staff are friendly! I love the fact that they seem to spend their money where they should, greens, fairways and tees although the grass roughes could use a little more care!
