About
San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

getting better
I have played San Tan Highlands many times over the years. The course was always slow to play and could be over 5 hours at times. I have played there twice so far this winter and the pace of play is much improved. Both rounds have been just over four hours. They have added sand to the bunkers and the greens are in good shape. Nice to see things changing for the better.
Great round
Perfect day, golf course was in amazing shape we played at our own pace didn’t see a soul front or back. Love this place
Staff not friendly
I arrived a little late due to traffic problems. The fellow at the pro shop just wanted the money and would not explain anything. After paying the round rather frustrated I went back to pro shop to get an explanation. He was more accommodating then and explained why I had to pay green fees when I thought I had already paid them online. Other than that the course was in good shape.
Good Experience
The back nine layout throughout the hills are great. The Bag Attendants and Starter were very friendly. The fairways and greens were in good shape; however, the rough along the fairways and greens were not.
A good round of golf with good friends. Very good pace of play.

Had a great time . Course and greens were in great condition and pace of play was fast.
Slow Play
Had a group of 4 ladies in front of us, we were a twosome. No marshall visible for the whole round. Ladies stopped for bathroom break after hole 4 and wouldn’t let us play through even when we were waiting for them to finish their bathroom break. We finally got in front of them at Hole 10 as they stopped for another bathroom break ( thank goodness).
There was two holes open ahead of them, we never saw them again behind us and we enjoyed the rest of the day.
Absolutely terrible pace of play. Plus not told there was a wedding there. Took extra 40 mins to play.
