San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Expensive for Average Quality course

Another high priced Phoenix golf round for an average quality course. Staff was very friendly, but course was average. Last time I played here, the price was $75, now $144.

Greens were quick, fairways average, tee boxes were good.

Super pleased

I had scheduled an early tee time for one but when checking in they suggested I could join a twosome that was teeing off earlier which I did. We started on hole 10 playing the back 9 first which was just awesome. Our final 9 holes (front) were very enjoyable but the vista’s were much more on average versus the wonderful views we experienced at the start. Be ready to take pictures…

Course value was excellent via the hot deal rate I paid. It was easy to noticed several course upgrades to make improvements in process to keep conditions current and play memorable going forward. Course is very playable and fun and the improvement projects of no distraction to play.

Afterwards I had lunch onsite with the two young guys I joined, they played the tips and I played the ~6200 yards which we completed in 3 1/2 hours, all shooting low 80’s. Good day for all and lunch was fresh fast and good. .

Bag drop and the pro shop entrance were both a little clumsy however we got it figured out no problem!

My slower highway drive in from Oakwood South/Chandler area was well worth it and to think I almost passed on making the trip diverted my disappointment.

I suggest play it!

Fun Round

Contrary to prior reviews, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, even while hosting a wedding. Course was in reasonably good shape, and beautiful scenery. Much cheaper early afternoon if the heat stays away.

45$ course max! If you pay more that’s too much!

Course was in not great shape. Greens were slow and over watered. Took 5 hours to play 18. Food was terrible at the turn. It was just not a great experience.

Not worth the price

Driving range is in atrocious condition. Worn out balls, unfixed divots, gravel. Small tee boxes are beat up, fairways patchy in places. Greens in fair shape.

Retirement golf course

I enjoyed the course layout but this place is over run with entitled members 55+ age group. Pace of play very poor with no marshals entire round. Will not play again.

Much stter

Haven’t played this course in 4 years so we noticed much improvement since then. Tees and greens were very nice considering the rounds played during winter. Fairways were also very good. Would like to see definitive rough/desert borders with rough growing everywhere. A few spots of dirt hard pan where I thought grass should grow.

Had a great time playing it though
