San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

One of the worst courses I’ve played in a long time

First and most important thing: they don’t have water anywhere on the course unless you pay for it

There’s no chipping area.. their bunker is a swamp and the practice area is crowded and in terrible condition

Course looked like it had been mowed and the keeper made it a point to leave large piles of grass clippings in ever fairway

Staff is all extremely rude and unhelpful. They had 6 guys sitting by the cart barn and not a single one of them stood up to ask us if we had played before, put clubs in the cart, pull a cart up for us, etc.

I’ll never go back to this course. Poston butte is 10 minutes up the road and is about 5x better in every single category.

The grass is green in San Tan Valley

I thought the course was in great shape. The people were very friendly. Some guy came out and gave us a cold water that was really nice. It was a good time. A few water issues on the cart path. Wouldn't say anything but I was driving my own cart.

Friendly course

This was probably the friendliest courses I have ever been to. It was like small town friendly where you know everyone and everybody is a friend.

The front 9 is a bit easier than the back 9. The back 9 has more character as it has more elevation changes which I like. I liked the sign which tells golfers which tees to play from. I wish more courses would do this.

Not What I Expected

The course wasn't in very good condition. Thank goodness I had bought a Golfnow Hot Deal. I ,however ,was charged again at the Club $60/person rate which I called and got reimbursed (system problem). I wouldn't have played the course if I didn't have the discounted rate.

Could be better.

Well 1st of all they have renamed themselves and have new software. So if you paid on golf now they may not be able to see it? I did not have a problem getting a refund. Although I did book a hot deal I was charged full price, but again didn't have a problem with the refund. Bunkers in rough shape but for the most part the course is alright. However there is a Troon course right up the road that always looks good for about the same price. Some advice to gain people, have a couples league or have a 4 person scramble? Mix it up and stop relying only on your snowbirds and retired people. I live on the course but have only played 6 times this year! Hoping for a better year and more exciting events in 2024.

Took me five years to finally get out and play the course. Fell in love the first time. New favorite course. Love the difficulty and the distance of the course.

Saturday meeting new friends.

I have played this course many times.. This was perhaps the worst conditions I have played. The fairways were limited grass on some holes, around the greens on several holes was under repair. The greens had been punched a little while ago and were from the normal standard. Considering the green fees were $64 I expected much better conditions.
