COURSE NEEDS WORK - STAFF MAKES IT BETTER

The course was in rough shape. Greens weren't bad but the fairways, especially front nine were terrible. Back nine was slightly better but the course would have received a 2 but the staff was excellent. Check in and clubhouse staff were very professional, friendly and made the day enjoyable. They did not have a cart girl so have to stock up on your beverages of choice before you went out.

A message from the Owners:

What you experienced is by design, and part of a $9m course renovation plan designed to completely transform Starfire for its 75th anniversary in December 2028. If you'd like to learn more about that $9m renovation, please see HERE.

When we bought Starfire in September 2024 we found the course didn't meet our quality standards. There are many, many steps to bringing the course back to where we need it to be, but the first is/was the elimination of all weeds, which must be done from April to September. That process leaves brown, bare spots where weeds once were while the bermuda base takes its time to grow back in. That is what you experienced.

Bermuda that's been choked out by rye grass and weeds for many years doesn't all come back in one season. So you can expect that next summer the course will look a lot better than this summer, but still won't be to our standard. And that we'll be at it again. Please consider that before you play here in the summer.

You will find that when we come out of overseed in mid-October Starfire will be a spectacular golf course. So feel free to come back and play then. But whenever you're here, know that what you see is the result of our effort to make the course as good as we can today while simultaneously making it better for tomorrow. Our job is to do that. Your job is to play golf. We wish you the best wherever you choose to do that.

Sincerely,

Swing First Golf owners and the Starfire Team

Poor conditions

Course is not maintained well enough to justify the price. I’d rather go to a driving range than play a round here.

Worst Course Conditions Ever

This is the worst course I’ve ever played. There was no grass on the fairways, the tee boxes are overgrown, every water hazard was so full it was flooding the rest of the course (standing water 8 inches deep in spots). There is garbage all over the course. The staff is super rude. I wouldn’t play here again if they paid me.

Good Course In Bad Shape And Not Getting Better

Played with my regular foursome and we all agreed that based on the continuing poor conditions and no apparent plan to correct things that this is no longer a course we recommend. Wet mud and dried mud everywhere make it difficult to hit shots. Grass seems to be in short supply except in the rough. Pace of play is slow because folks have to take time to find balls, clean them and then replace them into a place where they can hit from. Not a fun place to play right now. Our foursome has played Silverado, Talking Stick, Papago and Biltmore Links and they are all in much better condition than Starfire. At this point Starfire is not worth the price of admission.

Slow Pace Goat Ranch

Over the last 10 years I’ve golfed here several times. The last two years I’ve been increasingly bad. The pace of play is absolutely horrible. It took us almost 3 hours to finish the front nine my wife and I stopped playing at whole 15 it would’ve been at least a 5 1/2 hour round. No Ranger was available. The condition of the course is absolutely horrible. You had a nice drive down the middle of the fairway and you were met with dirt. There are muddy areas at every hole. I will not recommend this course and I will not take anybody to play this course again.

False advertising

I read the warnings which only spoke of the work done in July so I thought it was safe to book and at an $80 price point I assumed the course is player ready. I was dead wrong. The entire King18 was de-thatched. There was no fairway to speak of and it was mud ball all day. Very disappointed and I doubt I ever return. Either update the warnings or charge way way less. On top of 7 minutes tee times again at an $80 price point is ridiculous. I happily pay more for pace of play.

Awful Conditions, Fairways are 80% dirt

This was my first time here and this was honestly the worst course by condition I’ve played all summer. The audacity to charge $60+ for a round when the fairways are basically all dirt or mud. Dead fish and rats floating in the water hazards. Trash everywhere, dead birds near the green. If your ball manages to find the few patches of grass it’s mud because they flooded the course. This should be a $20 round or they need to close for the summer and get it together.

Oh btw beverage cart is cash only, apparently has been for months, but they don’t tell you that before you go out. Get new management or something this is a sad state for Starfire.

Poor condition

Mud and dirt throughout fairways. A few tee boxes where you cant even put your tee in the ground. Greens were solid but this course needs some serious attention
