Unfit for play due to seasonal maintenance
Tee boxes in poor repair, fairways scalped to dirt with patches of weed, bunkers and greens ok. No potable water on course, few ball washers in service, puddles on course due to excessive watering and poor drainage. Concrete cart paths in very poor repair - bulging, broken apart in same areas of a year ago.
If deciding to play do ask staff in advance for tees, water and ice as unlike other venues the cart was not fitted out for play with anything but a score card. Do be sure to stick the greens on water holes as there is no turf on the surrounding slopes to prevent the ball from trickling into the water hazard.
Discontinued play after 7 holes given need to repeatedly lift, clean and place ball on few available patches of grass.
Nice course but grass is a problem
I enjoyed the course but there is a lack of grass on the fairways. And they have been watering a lot so it was muddy in places. The tee boxes and greens were very nice. I like this layout - there are some pretty hard holes and some very reachable holes. The greens were much slower than I am used to in the Valley but I adapted. I don't think I would want to play here regularly but it was fun yesterday, and the price was very reasonable.

Thank you so much for the well thought out review.
What you experienced is by design, and part of a $9m course renovation plan designed to completely transform Starfire for its 75th anniversary in December 2028. If you'd like to learn more about that $9m renovation, please see HERE.
When we bought Starfire in September 2024 we found the course didn't meet our quality standards. There are many, many steps to bringing the course back to where we need it to be, but the first is/was the elimination of all weeds, which must be done from April to September. That process leaves brown, bare spots where weeds once were while the bermuda base takes its time to grow back in. That is what you experienced.
Bermuda that's been choked out by rye grass and weeds for many years doesn't all come back in one season. So you can expect that next summer the course will look a lot better than this summer, but still won't be to our standard. And that we'll be at it again. Please consider that before you play here in the summer.
You will find that when we come out of overseed in mid-October Starfire will be a spectacular golf course. So feel free to come back and play then. But whenever you're here, know that what you see is the result of our effort to make the course as good as we can today while simultaneously making it better for tomorrow. Our job is to do that. Your job is to play golf. We wish you the best wherever you choose to do that.
Sincerely,
Swing First Golf owners and the Starfire Team
Good Course But Bad Conditions
Mostly brown and burnt fairways on many of the holes in the 200-250 yd range from the tee. Work being done on one of the lakes on the King Course. Lake is dry and been in the same condition for the past month. Tee boxes are being redone on some of the holes and that will be a plus when they are all ready for usage. Can't justify the fee until they water the fairways and green them up. Better value and conditions to be had at Silverado, Orange Tree and Talking Stick.

What Happened to this place
They should pay you to play this course. The course is in Horrendous shape. Fairways and tee boxes are nothing but dirt. The only grass was on the greens and they were long and shaggy. Bag drop guys ignored us as we walked by them toward the golf carts. I had to ask them is it OK if I put our bags on those carts? these courses were halfway decent five or six years ago. I have no idea what happened to this establishment..

Grow some grass in your Fairways!
It’s too bad, because the staff is really pretty great at Starfire. But the fairways as almost all dirt! I played Palmbrook on Friday and it was 10 times better. And only $45 instead of $70. Play Starfire at your own risk.

So the course is pretty beat up on the fairways with lots of dirt, greens are okay but could use a cut, bunkers okay, tee boxes fair. I know it’s summer and the course is undergoing a transformation to a new grass. Still a decent play, and the beverage lady was so nice and accommodating.

Playing the Barren Fairways
My thoughts are similar to many reviews I read prior to playing. 80% of the fairways are no more than Dark Dirt. Patches of green weeds and clumps of grass. Greens and aprons are in good shape. Most tee boxes are just above fairways condition. No GPS in carts. Layout was fun. Staff is excellent. Supposedly there is a new course maintenance crew and management. 1 statement I was told and I hope I don't hear it again describing the short term future if a golf course condition: "We have to kill all of the grass off before new grass takes root. It has to get worse before it gets better" I will give the place another try when conditions improve. I wouldn't recommend due to course conditions only. I say only but that is very important to me. Everything else was a 9 out of 10.

Pretty good
My wife have just started playing two months ago, and I picked it up again after over 20 years of non-playing. Needless to say, it suites us fine. We are not the fastest as my wife is still learning and I’m trying to pick it up again. Not in the best of shape but it’s inexpensive and hard enough to be interesting. On top of this, it’s just 4 minutes from our house!
Thank you for playing Starfire Golf Club.
We are so glad you enjoyed the Starfire experience!
Thank you for your feedback, we are always working to improve the experience.
We look forward to welcoming you out again soon!

Good Course - Very Bad Conditions
I have played and liked this course for many years but the current fairways conditions are inexcusable. Many large 30 yard patches of brown dirt on the King Course where grass should be. At least the greens and tee boxes were playable. Better value and conditions can be found at Silverado, McCormick Ranch and Talking Stick.

Ok
Played front 9 holes.
Fairways average. Greens very good.
Would play again.
Should have senior and 9 hole rates.
Bad condition
Played here many time but this time the course was in horrible shape. More mud than grass. No sand in sand bottles, no ice in cooler.
Poor experience for price

What happened?
To be fair, I have played here several times in the past few years, and course conditions were fairly good. However this time, the course was in awful condition! Greens were satisfactory but fairways were bare, no good lies anywhere. Not sure what has happened here but I will not come back. Embarrassing!!
