Terrible Conditions

This course was in terrible shape. If you weren't hitting off of a dirt fairway sprinkled with grass, you were hitting off of weeds. I will never play here again.

A message from the Owners:

What you experienced is by design, and part of a $9m course renovation plan designed to completely transform Starfire for its 75th anniversary in December 2028. If you'd like to learn more about that $9m renovation, please see HERE.

When we bought Starfire in September 2024 we found the course didn't meet our quality standards. There are many, many steps to bringing the course back to where we need it to be, but the first is/was the elimination of all weeds, which must be done from April to September. That process leaves brown, bare spots where weeds once were while the bermuda base takes its time to grow back in. That is what you experienced.

Bermuda that's been choked out by rye grass and weeds for many years doesn't all come back in one season. So you can expect that next summer the course will look a lot better than this summer, but still won't be to our standard. And that we'll be at it again. Please consider that before you play here in the summer.

You will find that when we come out of overseed in mid-October Starfire will be a spectacular golf course. So feel free to come back and play then. But whenever you're here, know that what you see is the result of our effort to make the course as good as we can today while simultaneously making it better for tomorrow. Our job is to do that. Your job is to play golf. We wish you the best wherever you choose to do that.

Sincerely,

Swing First Golf owners and the Starfire Team

Horrible no grass in the fairways

Haven’t played this course in over a year and will never play it again. There is literally no grass in the fairways. It’s a goat farm goat track greens are decent very slow. They must have a new ground crew new owners or somethings going on because this is not the same place Granted we only paid $40 for two players, but it wasn’t even worth that.

Not worth the money!

Apparently the course is under new management and it’s under construction. The fairways basically have no grass for the entire front 9. The warning on the website discussed aerating the greens but no mention of playing in mud and overflowing lake water. Total disappointment for the price. Beware!

Could be better but still decent

Greens were solid. Course is tough. Lots of mud and dirt patches. For the price, you can find better right now. If they fix the dirt patches I would play again. Make sure you can find the fairway here.

Not worth it!

Course was in terrible shape. No fairways to speak of. Mainly dirt and had to find patches of grass/weed to place ball on. The greens were not horrible, but they were very slow. I think they had been punched a week or so before, and the pace of place was ridiculous. We had a 5-some in front of us and young kids trying to jump everyone along the way. The individual playing with us quit after 9 holes. Totally ruined my memory of it being a great course to play. I heard it was under new management and hopefully they will get it cleaned up.

Really, Really Bad Shape

The front 9 shouldn’t even be allowed to be played. It’s more dirt than it is grass. The back 9 was a little better but still pretty bad… even considering summer conditions compared to other courses.

I played with a couple who lives on the course and they said this is the worst they’ve ever seen it in 20 years. Apparently some local brothers purchased it some months ago, and it’s even gotten worse. One of the main ponds is completely drained. Others are overflowing. Tee boxes on some holes looked like a bail of hay.

Worse yet, according to the couple I played with, the course is completely silent on if / what improvements will be made… leaving them to wonder if this a permanent decline or an investment phase. I wouldn’t even play this course for $20, because the first 9 is hardly playable.

The pros: great historic course, great location, great bones

The cons: too many to list. But furthermore, the clubhouse restaurant was closed… even at 2pm on a Sunday.

Dear Owners: please turn this course around… and communicate what your plans are!

New owners don’t care about the golfers

Starfire used to be my go-to course. Not any more. The conditions are pitiful. To be fair, greens are in good shape. Everything else is pathetic. If the grass isn’t dead, it is missing. Fairways are horrid - much of the surface is mud. In truth, the “rough” is much better than the fairways because that grass is present, if dead. Tee boxes are even worse than fairways. On some, it is impossible to find any grass from which to tee off. Just mud. There is no drinking water anywhere on the course. You get one bottle of water on your cart. The clubhouse has one cold water container and some cups to put it in. All other water has been removed from the course. The ball washers are almost all completely dry - we found three that had a trickle of water in them. Literally could not get the mud off the ball using the washer. To clean my ball, I had to use spit and my towel. When the round was over and cart was driven into return area, no employee offered to wipe down the clubs - just asked if we had a good time. No offer to take clubs to car, either. Worst thing - I bought the Summer Pass for $150 to get $20 weekday rounds. I see here that some rounds are $18 without the summer pass. Thanks, Starfire, for cheating me out of $150 and providing a pathetic excuse for a golf course.

Unfit for play due to seasonal maintenance

Tee boxes in poor repair, fairways scalped to dirt with patches of weed, bunkers and greens ok. No potable water on course, few ball washers in service, puddles on course due to excessive watering and poor drainage. Concrete cart paths in very poor repair - bulging, broken apart in same areas of a year ago.

If deciding to play do ask staff in advance for tees, water and ice as unlike other venues the cart was not fitted out for play with anything but a score card. Do be sure to stick the greens on water holes as there is no turf on the surrounding slopes to prevent the ball from trickling into the water hazard.

Discontinued play after 7 holes given need to repeatedly lift, clean and place ball on few available patches of grass.

Nice course but grass is a problem

I enjoyed the course but there is a lack of grass on the fairways. And they have been watering a lot so it was muddy in places. The tee boxes and greens were very nice. I like this layout - there are some pretty hard holes and some very reachable holes. The greens were much slower than I am used to in the Valley but I adapted. I don't think I would want to play here regularly but it was fun yesterday, and the price was very reasonable.

Good Course But Bad Conditions

Mostly brown and burnt fairways on many of the holes in the 200-250 yd range from the tee. Work being done on one of the lakes on the King Course. Lake is dry and been in the same condition for the past month. Tee boxes are being redone on some of the holes and that will be a plus when they are all ready for usage. Can't justify the fee until they water the fairways and green them up. Better value and conditions to be had at Silverado, Orange Tree and Talking Stick.

A message from the Owners:

Thank you so much for the well thought out review.
