Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa

About
The Catalina Course is one of two golf courses at Omni Tucson National Resort. It is more well known than its sister course, the Sonoran, since it is both the original layout and it has been host to over 30 PGA Tour events over the years. The Catalina Course is a traditional parkland layout while the Sonoran offers true desert golf, as its name would imply. The challenging design incorporates eight sparkling lakes and a total of 80 bunkers strategically placed throughout. The 18th is touted as one of the finest and most demanding finishing holes on the PGA Tour. This tricky par 4 leaves little room for error with water along both sides of the fairway, it also requires a blind tee shot to a well-protected, elevated green.

#16 plays fairly steeply uphill. I was 16 inches for a birdie, after hitting a solid 135 club from 109 out. Photo submitted by Jonathan5270953 on 08/14/2013

catalina course - tucson nat'l Photo submitted by bellefeuille on 11/25/2012
Solid resort course for the money
Some really fun holes. Some quirky holes. Decent bit of water. Would play again
Fantastic course with great staff
I played the Catalina course three times during my stay in Tucson. The Catalina course is challenging but fair and can accommodate any level of player. The staff is extremely friendly. The members at Tucson National were great and gave me tips on how to play the course. Definitely recommend.
Outside Service Lacking
I have played at Omni on a number of occasions over the last few months. A few times I wasn’t given any help when I arrived with my bag or a cart. When I approached both attendants were watching cell phones. I walked up put my bag on cart, went into pro shop, came outside and not once was asked if I needed anything. When I returned from my round I cleaned out cart and got my own bag slowly to see if he would ask if I needed anything. I then watched a couple arrive and he did same to them. This has happened a number of times now. When paying premium Green Fee you expect just a bit more then what your getting at Omni right now.
Nice course except…
Really enjoyed playing this course. Excellent layout. The grass in the rough could be punitive but I guess the lesson is to stay out of the rough.
The one criticism is the bunkers. There are municipal courses around here that have better sand. Spoiled what was an otherwise pleasurable round.
A must play
Course is in fantastic shape, just make sure to hit the fairways or your ball will disappear in first cut of grass. Pace of play, no push or hold ups, was excellent. Highly recommend
Good condition
The Catalina course was in good condition for this time of year. The fairways were green, the putting surface true, AND there was real sand in the sand traps.
Great Shape for July
Friendly, helpful staff and a superintendent who obviously knows what they’re doing make this a great experience, even if it’s 110 degrees! With all that said, $60 for a weekday twilight rate is still a bit much IMO. I bet it’s really green $$$ in the winter!
Great course loose ends
I have played Omni a few times in the last year and would play it more often if not for the loose ends.
When I arrived yesterday my round was to include balls at driving range. When I arrived at range there were six stations set up for members only and no balls at any of the other positions.
My last two rounds I’ve played when I finished there was no one at cart station. I left a $20 tip in the jar on my last trip before the round and nobody was there to wipe down clubs remove bag from cart etc.
Great course Loose Ends
Course good, but needs some work.
Played the Sonoran course, & enjoyed playing with a member. For other positives, the layout was nice, and all staff were friendly & kind. Regarding constructive criticism, some of the tee boxes were in rough shape, & some of the greens were not that great, with patchy brown spots. For the higher price, compared to other local courses, and knowing the really good reputation (prior to playing), I was a bit disappointed. However, will play again when I can try the Catalina side.
Great course but need a marshal
Course and staff are great but we had a group spending over 15 minutes looking for balls multiple times and they were over 3 holes behind the group in front of them. They need a Marshall that does something besides just drive around in a cart.
Need a pace of play ranger
As the ratings indicate, overall it’s a fine course. Fairways are a little thin and greens a little bumpy, but that’s a function of this time of year in Tucson. What is unacceptable as a pace of play of five hours at three in the afternoon. if you’re going to put players out at 10 minute intervals, you need to have a pace of play Ranger on the course. Standing around waiting to hit shots for 10 minutes takes away a lot of the enjoyment of the course.
Wonderful Layout & Great Condition
Played in PM at a discounted rate, which made it worth while. Staff very welcoming, great practice facilities. Course in immaculate condition. Greens great pace and rolled very true.
