Situated between the Catalina and Rincon Mountains, Forty Niner Country Club runs alongside a wooded riverbed. The golf course features fairways lined with mesquites, giant cottonwoods, eucalyptus trees, and weeping willows. Desert shrubbery also lines the fairways. The course has a traditional layout that sprawls across gently rolling terrain. It's a nice walkable golf course but it's not easy. Rather than distance, this course requires accurate shot placement and careful strategy in order to maneuver the tricky doglegs and subtly elevated greens. The most difficult hole on the course comes early on. The par-4 fifth is an only seemingly narrow hole but the double-tiered green has a dramatic slope right in the center. Forty Niner Country Club finishes with a par 3 that requires a carry over water. If played smartly, it offers a great birdie opportunity.

Lovely course, in very good condition for time of year. Such a friendly club - love receiving updates via email during the last couple of years when we couldn’t visit

Nice Layout, Miserable Conditioning

I've always enjoyed playing at 49er. it's a fun layout with plenty of variety and some challenging shotmaking. Unfortunately, current course conditions are so bad that I won't be back for a while. Several tee boxes were just weeds and bare dirt. There were a lot of decent spots in the fairways, but also a lot of dirt and weeds. The only saving grace was that the greens were actually in very good condition. The greenskeeper should be congratulated for the condition of the greens, but excoriated for the condition of the rest of the course. S/he has some work to do!

Beautiful day

The greens were fabulous! It had rained the day before and everything was so green. Unusual site for Arizona. We drive from Casa Grande to play here.

Always Challanging

Course conditions of the fairways was very good and very green. Rough was a bit too tall on many holes, I lost a few balls, or searched longer than normal. Being off the fairway on this course is always a big problem. Tee boxes were very sparse for grass and some greens were patchy. Course personnel were very friendly and due to the hot and humid conditions there were few players so I could play at a very comfortable pace. I use a cart but normally keep it on the path and walk to my ball and back. Having a relatively empty course let me do that without delaying anyone. Now if I would just hit more consistently. :)

Tough to define…

Has been on a long road to improvement and recovery but recent tough summer weather and then a group of storms have created difficult conditions.

Many tees void of grass. Areas populated with thick bladed grass (not preferable) and some with decent thin bladed (Bermuda?). Mixed with blank (dirt) and just bumpy terrain.

Greens firm (dry) and bumpy and do not putt well. No real consistency so you make a putt, it’s a good deal luck.

Surprisingly bunkers were in great shape. Much debris and limbs down from storms, but the course has so many trouble areas and it appears the pin locations have remained in the same place for days on end (many hacked up).

This course is fighting an uphill battle against all these condition issues.

The clubhouse and grill are excellent and they run an attentive and friendly drink cart.

As much as I like the layout and personnel I won’t be playing here for awhile until conditions improve.

Course condition

Great value if your looking to swing a club and have great Mountain View’s. The condition of the course was terrible. They need to rip the entire course up and redo it,. From the tee box, to the fairways and greens was sand, bumps, and rough conditions. Bring plenty of balls.
