The Club at Starr Pass - Gambler/Pioneer
About
The Club at Starr Pass offers 27 holes of championship golf that have been host to legends such as Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in three different 18-hole combinations. One of these combinations is Coyote/Roadrunner. Coyote is the club's signature course and while the Roadrunner nine might be the shortest, it has plenty of elevation changes. Both golf courses are carved from the scenic Tucson Mountains, providing golfers with a diverse landscape that is abundant with jackrabbits, quail, and deer. In addition to the three nines, there is also a double-loaded driving range and a practice area with putting and chipping greens.

Starr Pass - RoadRunner #9 Photo submitted by Mark7630854 on 10/08/2012
Excellent Course
It’s a tough course to play for the first time due to the number of blind shots or carries over desert that are tough to figure out off the tee. Course and range in very good condition. Pace of play was very good. Tough course to score on until you play it a few times. Definitely recommend!
Beautiful course with lots of challenges
First time on this course. I played the Coyote 9 (I think) and $30 price was very reasonable for this high quality course. If you’re a first timer, make sure you take a map and stay on designated course. There are several and have overlapping points. I think I accidentally ended up on a different course since my 9 hole course ended over a mile from the clubhouse but it was a nice walk back.
Second timer
Second time around makes a difference there are blind shots, fast greens and holes where you cannot hit driver, all in all a great test, staff courteous and practice range in good shape as well. Will be back
Starr Pass Golf
Nice course, well kept. Greens were reasonably good.. need to be straight because there is not much chance of hitting out of the desert rough. Over all A rating, would play again.
Always fun & challenging track!
Hadn’t played Starr Pass for a few years so it was a treat & a test to play it again.
Lots of forced carries from all t boxes, many blind shots so having played previously should be an advantage-but not if you’re not on your game!
Greens are tricky to read but they as well as the whole course is in excellent winter play condition.
One tip: bring lots of balks & enjoy the scenery:)
Beautiful setting in the foothills/desert. Top notch practice facilities.
Great course. Great variety up, down, sideways and always a bunker where you want to naturally aim. Fast greens but fair. Didn’t score well but the one local with us shot his best round in 15 years. Hot putter helped. Certainly will play again when we see a good rate.
Generally a great layout with some areas for improvement
I have played Starr Pass many times, and generally it has been great. Unfortunately, yesterday was a little disappointing. Pace of play was less than ideal. We played behind a twosome who had their girlfriends/wives? with them. The front nine took them 2 hours and 20 minutes as a twosome, and actually stopped in the middle of the 7th fairway for over 15 minutes to take pictures, hang out with the cart girl and seemed oblivious to anyone but themselves. By the time we teed off on the hole there were three groups hanging out at the tee. Things got better on the back as one couple dropped out and the single did manage to play the back in 2 hours! There was NO rangers all day. The course is beautiful except there is hardly any sand in the bunkers. The bunkers are hardpan with some loose dirt on top. For a nice golf course they could invest in some sand for the bunkers. Nice bag girl when we arrived, and starter is friendly. No bag staff at all when we finished. Not sure if they are scrimping on staff to save money, or just an off day.
Doesn't get much better.
This is my 3rd or 4th round at Starr Pass, and I have played all 27 holes. The twilight 18 rate is an absolutely amazing deal for one of the best course you can play in Tucson.
It is really well manicured, greens are almost always clean and fast, and it will force a lot of drops if you aren't hitting straight.. which is nice considering some course are so wide open around here that you barely feel challenged with you aim.
If you play from the tips... bring your x-ray goggles.
Fun Course
This is my 4th time playing the course, and it never gets old. Very challenging off the tee from the blacks, and the greens are deceptive. You better drive it in play, or it will be a long day. Haven't played another course like it.
Good course
My first time in Tucson and first time on the course. Good desert course with beautiful views and lots of wildlife, including a pack of Javelinas who let us play through
Challenging course for first timers and great desert views
Fast and furious greens, good hazards. Pretty neat fairways
Great course IF you can find it for $50-60. And you can
The greens appear patchy with various colors of grass but they are cut smooth and roll true. Keep the ball on the course and the course is very playable. Personally I hate the 1st hole. I've hit that green most times I've played it (8-10 times) but never have I gotten a GIR. This day hit it 10-12 feet onto the green....didn't matter ended rolling down down down and left with a steep uphill 80 ft. Chip. Hate it and think the course should address that super false front that appears to take up 30% of the green. And honest, my only real criticism.
Take your medicine
A challenging course, greens were fabulous. Playing first time took my medicine with some blind shots and runouts but just part of playing a top level course. Practice facilities nice and homes were well off the course and out of the way.
