DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge
About
Perched in the hills above Santa Cruz, DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge features plenty of elevation changes as well as tight, tree-lined fairways making this short layout anything but a cinch. The result of the tight layout, however, often translates into long rounds as higher handicappers look for their golf balls in the woods. Designed by Bert Stamps, the golf course opened in 1970. Conditioning is average, but DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge's green fees are a small fraction of its more famous neighbors.

Worth playing
Course in good overall condition.
Got out 1/2 hour early on 1 PM tee time, and course was empty.
Fairways and tee boxes in great condition, but greens were in need of some smoothing out.
The only water is in the bathrooms. No fountains or jugs on course.
BYOD
One of the most challenging courses for the yardage anywhere.
A shotmaker's course. Premium on accuracy instead of length. Grabs your attention on every shot from tee to green. If not careful, some sloping fairways will funnel seemingly good shots into trouble. Consider it an accomplishment to get through a round with no lost balls. Course was generally well maintained, however, a couple of greens were spotty. Pace of play was a little slow but great weather made it bearable. Cold pitcher of beer at the 19th hole capped off a nice day.
Good test for how you are striking it!
You need to manage your ball around this tight layout or else you will find yourself reaching for another ball rather than poke around some potential poison oak. Greens were sloping with runoff areas and were very fast when putting from above the hole. Very scenic with lots of trees and still have room to play the holes. Bordered by park preserve with eucalyptus and pine.
Beautiful setting in the hills above Santa Cruz.
DeLaveaga is an excellent course, located in the hills above Santa Cruz. DeLaveaga is in a natural setting with no homes or traffic in the area. The course isn't long, but accuracy is at a premium with trouble lurking on every hole.
Canyons and barancas are located throughout the course, so think strategically in order to avoid penalty strokes. The greens were in excellent shape and are faster than most public courses, but slower than championship courses.
Quality Muni, Plagued by Slow Play & Useless Marshalls
It never fails, I enjoy a round of golf at Delaveaga and then the next time I play it's excruciatingly slow(and this was a thursday, not the weekend.) It baffles me that there is a constant presence of Marshall's roaming this course, lurking behind every dogleg bend but they do absolutely nothing to move play along. This course should take 3 1/2 to 4 hours to play and this past Thursday it took 5 hours to get around. I am not a fast, blast away player but it is no fun to have to wait on EVERY shot. The Marshall program at Delaveaga must be a relic program to appease some long time older golfers, because they do nothing to enforce wasted time. I have a job and a life, let me play and have fun.
Do I recommend this course, the answer is - hope you get lucky.
Well maintained.
Course was in great shape considering the resent rains. The greens were a little bumpy but good enough for winter conditions. Pace of play was very good. Had a great time.
Great place to play golf
This is a very narrow at places, but well laid out course that offers copious challenges and beautiful landscape features. It's always a pleasure to play this course, regardless of the time of year!
This course is vary beautiful.
Vary fun coarse but vary wet becouse of all the rain.
Wear waterproof cleats in winter months.
Beautiful mountain course.
My husband and I visited during a rainy period, so was cart path only. We usually walk anyway, so this wasn't a problem. We found some fun challenges with doglegs with narrow elbows, trees guarding approach shots, carries to the green, narrow fairways. Deer seem to be comfortable on this course. Course could be somewhat punishing without some degree of accuracy, but it's just a beautiful course.
this coarse is very challenging
for playing in december the coarse was in pretty good shape. it was a little sloppy in some areas but with all the rain it was very playable. the greens overall were ok but again due to weather they roled good. for the price i will be back!
Bargain at $30 special
Nice course. Short but challenging. In good condition.
Greens slow.
Fun course
First time on this course. Really enjoyed it and the staff were extremely friendly. Despite the morning rain, the course was in great shape. Looking forward to going back.
Nice muni course
Not a long course. Pretty tight-accuracy a premium. Beautiful
scenery, nice trees and some ocean views, no houses in sight.
Great par 3s, all of them fun and challenging.
This could be are new Thanksgiving tradition. Great Day!
Had a fun day. Coarse was in good shape but a little wet. The carts were not allowed on the fairways due to the wettness so that was kind of a pain. Would have been easier to just carry our clubs.
Very challenging coarse that makes you think. The risk of hitting driver on some holes not worth the risk, unless your feeling it.
Terrible service, terrible fairways & tees, deathly slow play
I am a former golf pro, so when I see this kind of incompetence, it bothers me. I booked a 2-some for an 11:52 tee time and we ended up playing the 18th hole in the dark.
First off, when we checked in, the pro shop told us there were running "a little behind." That turned out to be 40 minutes behind. Then we had 2 teenagers sneak on the course in front of us on #10, playing 2 balls each, slow us down even more. We called the pro shop, who sent out a marshal, but all the marshal would do was tell the guys to try to play faster. Turns out the guys lied to the marshal, saying the pro shop said it was ok to start on #10. The marshal asked the shop who told him, "no, they never checked in at all." The marshal and the shop refused to do anything more about it.
I explained our frustration to the marshal about the late start, slow play and now people sneaking on the course probably preventing us from finishing 18, and he said, "Oh, the real problem is that there were 5 five-somes out today." Really??? If sending out 5-somes causes morning tee-times to already get 40 minutes behind and 5+ hour pace of play, THEN AS A GOLF COURSE, YOU DON'T SEND OUT 5-SOMES!!!
The greens were nice, but the tees and fairways were in pretty poor shape.
A fun and challanging golf course
This course has a lot of challenge, trees, a few "shoot over the barrancas. Plays about 41/2 to 5 hours on the weekend. Great for average golfer.
Course has some well laid out holes and makes for a very enjoyable round of golf.
Played on a perfect fall day-temps in the 70's. Pace of play was slow but the day made that okay. The course was a little damp in spots so drainage may be an issue after rain but over all, conditions were great. My only complaint would be going out after a 5-some... Round took 4:55
10th is always a nightmare....weirdest golf hole in all of santa cruz and monterey county. Had a third shot into the green, and I muffed it.
Narrow fairways so you'll usually lose a couple o fballs unless you can shape shots into the green without going down a canyon....Fun
Nice layout in Santa Cruz foothills.
Good practice range Nice course with some tough holes , gets lots of play could be some slow days.
