Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

New sand in traps is full of rocks
Always love black horse and bayonet. Great staff. They are building a major development so of course there are going to be construction adjustments – – one thing that I don’t understand though - why the new sand traps have extremely rocky and gritty sand – – seriously don’t want to hit out of the sand traps and risk damaging my clubs. If you don’t believe me go play and see for yourself. Thought maybe I was being picky but I have never seen sand this bad. Played Bayonet several times the last few months and noticed this there as well. They put new touch screens on the carts but I feel that money would have been much better spent on bunker sand without rocks.
Course a work in progress
Lousy overall condition. Course being renovated. Almost impossible to play with so much dirt on both sides of every fairway. All sand mostly. Greens super slow. Tee arras No Bueno. They should have shut it down, finished work and reopened. Fairways will be nice.
Great course and condition
I played here on a weekday morning. It was a bit foggy but everything else was great in terms of the conditions and pace.
Will definitely be back!
Super fun course. In excellent condition. Greens are challenging in a good, fun kind of way. Only negative is that houses are currently being built around the course which, at least for now detracts from the visual appeal.
Too much costruction
Homes being built destroy the beauty of course and are responsible for disruptive construction to accommodate houses…or should i say McMansions

Reseeding makes Black Horse worth playing
Played on 7/17/23 and the fairways were in much better condition than when I played 2 years ago!
A year from now will allow the course to mature and be in 1st class condition

It’s very nice place to golfing. Recently as remodeling and build new houses, much dirt around, ball has to be straight otherwise will tough to keep up
One of My Favorite Courses
Bayonet and Black Horse are great courses. The courses are always in great shape, and the pace of play is good (on the weekdays). The practice facility has everything you need. The weather is the thing you need to worry about, but that's part of the game. Have fun!!!
