Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Good Course, Great Staff and Practice Facility
Played the Whites and had a good round. Lots of challenge from very good Layout (and conditions). Staff were great. Would definitely play here again.
Black Horse
Love this course - NCGA rate is unbeatable!! Sad to see all the new construction of homes along the golf course😳. (Doesn’t seem to be kept up like it used to be-I’m a 25 year black horse player)
Blackhorse on Wednesday
Great experience on o beautiful day!
What a great day @ THE BLACK HORSE!!
Always fun and beautiful!!! Not too many birdies yet really fun and excellent conditions!! Love to come and play here with beautiful ocean views!!!
Course in Poor Shape
Greens are good, but fairways are bare spots and grass clumps. Not what you expect for the price.
Black horse
The course is in ok shape.
Could use a lot of work on softening fairways.
A useful pin placement guide would be helpful considering the undulating greens.
My Favorite Place
Love both golf courses, travel here to play twice a year. Course set up and condition are excellent. Only downer was the construction of new homes on the course, but no place is safe these days. A MUST PLAY if you are in the area.....
Building houses !! Ugly !!!
This great course is now going to be full of housing !!! Tearing down trees !!! We won’t be playing here again !!!
Bayonet was better than Black Horse
New home construction all over the courses made it annoying, but the fairway and green conditions of Black Horse were uncommonly poor. Staff, clubhouse, pro shop, and restaurant were good - but Black Horse course conditions we’re definitely below acceptable and a shame.
The course itself was challenging but for $129 the fairways and green side rough could be a lot better for it being in seaside.
Fantastic views. Great layout. But its had better conditions.
Good course to play . My negative review would be of the fairways. Grass was blotchy, maybe a disease? And the roots had no strength. Everyone in our group had a difficult time hitting the ball without tearing out a divot that would allow your club head to go right under the ball. So lots of flop shots. Lots of divots to fill in. We played 6 rounds at different courses (vacation) so it wasn’t our lack of skill, it’s just that fairways were to soft or mushy or weak roots.
This course is the best value for the money on the Monterrey Peninsula. It is challenging without being too difficult and it will require shots from every club in your bag. The elevation changes are challenging and the views can be spectacular.
Disappointed
Slow play with the marshal doing NOTHING to speed up play. Fairways patchy and greens bumpy.
Easier than Bayonet, great value
Fun course. Shorter and easier layout than Bayonet. I would say 5/6 strokes less. A few dry spots in the fairways. Greens were just aerated but it may help since they usually cut the greens soooo short. Will definitely mix this one in the rotation along with other bargain friendly Monterey courses.
Very very poor condition….
I’m utterly disappointed and felt embarrassed to bring my friends from socal I invited. (We we’re two foursomes) One, the greens had so many patches of bare spots and the fairways too, we felt like we were playing on an uneven concrete surfaces. Two, they were building houses in between and around the fairways. Dust and noise from the construction interfered with our play. It is a shame. They should have warned us before they charge $115 per person.
