Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Weather was perfect. Greens hard, fast and undulating. Great layout, great views. I'm an east coast golfer, not used to grass types. O yeah, lots of bunkers, most in the wrong places for my game. I will be back.

Good fun, challenging greens

Pros - good value, great ocean views, greens in good condition, decent pace of play, nice practice facility, friendly staff.

Cons - need a marshal to improve pace of play (some groups extremely slow), lots of damage to course from animals (squirrels).

Overall - the pros outweigh the cons .

Good round

I had a good round at Blackhorse. I made the mistake of assuming that the GolfNow rate was the same as the walk up rate. Turns out the GolfNow rate was about 30% less than the counter rate.

So when I went in as a walk up single, they advise I could get the NCGA rate (I’m a member) but did not mention the GolfNow rate. I thought it was odd and paid the full amount. I went to check GolfNow and saw they difference. They happily refunded my fee and let me use the GolfNow rate.

The course appeared to have some maintenance going on, appeared that the fairways were rolled?? They seemed flattened which made for tighter lies. Assume this is part of the normal maintenance cycle. I did not see any fairway punching, but maybe just a few small spots around greens ( greens were fine and not punched)

There was no starter to send me off but it was super slow so no biggie. I played fast and easily completed before sundown for my twilight tee time.

I relay enjoy this course and would recommend it. I also recommend the bar/restaurant the food is excellent.

Thanks Jeff

No grass

I don’t believe this golf course could get any worse. The greens are basically mud with some blades of grass coming out, the fairways are not much better. The only positive development is that Troon golf has taken over and I hope to see some changes soon. This course used to be a lot of fun to play but right now I would stay away at least for a year or more.

Great Value

Blackhawk is the slightly easier of the Bayonet / Blackhawk 18s, but just slightly. The greens are extremely challenging and often hard to read given their placement on hillsides or sloping ground. But that's what make them fun!

Tight lies

Be prepared to hit a lot of tight lies. Watch your step outside the fairways; gophers must drive tractors given the size of some holes.
